Piabucus caudomaculatus was described by Richard P. Vari in 1977. The valid name, as recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, is Piabucus caudomaculatus Vari, 1977; because it was placed in Piabucus at original description and remains there, the authority is not parenthetical.
The genus Piabucus belongs to the family Iguanodectidae, a small assemblage of Neotropical characiforms endemic to South America. Iguanodectidae was long subsumed within the large family Characidae, but molecular and morphological analyses beginning in the late twentieth century supported its recognition as a distinct family. Within Iguanodectidae, Piabucus is one of several genera whose placement and interrelationships have been refined as the broader characiform phylogeny has been better resolved.
Piabucus caudomaculatus is the type species of the genus and the species around which its taxonomic circumscription centres. No synonyms are currently recognised under the valid name.
Morphology
Piabucus caudomaculatus is a moderately slender, laterally compressed fish typical of the iguanodectid body plan, reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 4 in. The body is elongate relative to many tetras, the profile fairly straight along the dorsal surface and gently curved ventrally, tapering to a narrow caudal peduncle.
The defining external character is the dark, well-defined caudal spot — a roughly circular or wedge-shaped blotch sitting at the base of the tail, which provided the specific epithet. The general body colour is silvery, sometimes with a faint yellowish or brassy wash along the flanks. A lateral stripe of variable intensity may be present in some individuals or populations. Were it to become available, husbandry would follow the standard approach for small, schooling Amazonian characins: a spacious tank with open swimming space, soft and slightly acidic water in the tropical temperature range, fine-leaved plants or floating cover, and a peaceful community of similarly sized fish. Like most schooling characiforms it would benefit from being kept in a group of six or more to maintain natural behaviour and reduce stress-related shyness. Its modest size — under 4 in — makes it manageable in a reasonably sized aquarium.
The absence of captive breeding records and the species' rarity in the hobby mean that its long-term aquarium husbandry, temperament, and adaptability to typical tap-water conditions are not well characterised. Interested aquarists should treat it as a species requiring conditions closer to its wild Amazonian habitat than to the harder water tolerated by many commonly kept tetras.
Conservation
Piabucus caudomaculatus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dating to 22 April 2014. The LC listing reflects the species' broad distribution across the Amazon and Orinoco basins — one of the world's largest and most intact freshwater systems — and the absence of documented population-level threats sufficient to trigger a higher threat category.
While the Amazon basin faces ongoing pressures from deforestation, agricultural expansion, dam construction, and artisanal and industrial mining, P. caudomaculatus has a sufficiently wide range that localised habitat loss is unlikely to threaten the species as a whole in the near term. It is not targeted by the ornamental fish trade at any meaningful scale, removing one pressure that affects some more visually striking Neotropical species.
