Taxonomy & naming
Priocharax pygmaeus was described by Stanley H. Weitzman and Richard P. Vari in 1987 in a paper published in the Proceedings of the Biological Society of Washington (volume 100, number 3). The type series was drawn from the Upper Río Orinoco, Río Negro, and Río Amazonas basins, with specimens from Leticia in Colombia among the type material. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) treats Priocharax pygmaeus Weitzman & Vari, 1987 as the valid name; the authority is not parenthetical because the species was described directly in Priocharax, the genus where it remains.
The genus Priocharax belongs to the large and morphologically diverse family Characidae. At the time of its description it was placed among the miniature characids — a functionally informal grouping of exceptionally small species within the family that tend toward translucency, reduced ossification, and fine-structured dentition. The species is not closely allied to the more familiar tetras of the hobby and is rarely traded.
Morphology
Adults of Priocharax pygmaeus reach a maximum of approximately 0.5 in standard length, placing them among the most diminutive members of Characidae and indeed among the smallest teleosts in the Upper Amazon fauna. The body is slender and highly compressed laterally, and the musculature and skeleton are sufficiently reduced that living fish appear largely transparent under aquarium or field lighting, with the internal organs and backbone faintly visible through the flanks.
The species shares the family's basic plan — a single dorsal fin, an adipose fin posterior to it, and a forked caudal fin — but all structures are scaled down to an extreme degree. Pigmentation is sparse; the flanks are largely hyaline with at most faint silvery reflections and indistinct lateral patterning. The jaws carry small, fine teeth suited to picking minute invertebrates from substrate and leaf litter. Sexual dimorphism, if present, has not been characterised in the literature available from the research cache.
Habitat
Priocharax pygmaeus inhabits shaded and partially shaded rainforest streams in the Upper Amazon and associated blackwater drainages. FishBase characterises the microhabitat as having a clay bottom with accumulations of leaf litter and an absence of submerged aquatic vegetation — the benthic-layer equivalent of a forest-floor stream. The species is classified as benthopelagic, spending time at or near the bottom rather than in open water. Recorded distribution spans Colombia and Peru, with the Río Ucayali system (Upper Amazon, Peru) and the Upper Río Orinoco and Río Negro drainages (Colombia and Venezuela) represented in the type series.
Water temperatures in these habitats are tropical, with FishBase listing 77 °F as a reference figure. Blackwater streams of this type are characteristically soft, acidic, and heavily stained with dissolved tannins from decomposing leaf litter, though precise pH and hardness data for the specific microhabitats of this species are not documented in the sources available.
Feeding
With a trophic level of 3.0 recorded in FishBase, Priocharax pygmaeus is a low-level carnivore feeding primarily on small animal matter rather than plant material. The combination of its minute size, benthopelagic position, and leaf-litter microhabitat points to a diet of micro-invertebrates — small crustaceans, worms, chironomid larvae, and similar items encountered in the substrate detritus layer.
The fine-toothed, small-gaped jaw of the species constrains prey size to items of appropriately minute dimensions. In the wild the species likely forages opportunistically across the leaf-litter bed, picking exposed invertebrates from the undersides of leaves and from soft sediment. Mating
No specific observations of mating behaviour in Priocharax pygmaeus have been published in the sources available. Based on the biology of comparable miniature characids, successful reproduction in captivity would likely require very soft, warm, acidic water replicating the tannin-rich blackwater conditions of its natural habitat, and a fine substrate or leaf-litter layer in which eggs could be deposited. First foods for the larval stage would need to be appropriately minute — infusoria-grade or smaller — given the adult's own diminutive size.
In the aquarium
Priocharax pygmaeus is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby and is not offered by mainstream retailers or specialist traders. Its extreme small size — 0.5 in SL at maximum — means it would be invisible in all but the most carefully managed nano-biotope setups, and its leaf-litter blackwater microhabitat requirements place it firmly in the realm of specialist fish rooms rather than general community tanks.
For any keeper who did obtain specimens, the minimal requirements would include very soft, acidic, heavily tannin-stained water at around 77 °F, a fine-grained or leaf-litter-covered substrate with low flow, and tankmates — if any — restricted to similarly diminutive species with no predatory capacity. Live foods of suitably minute dimensions would almost certainly be essential. The species is noted as benthopelagic, so surface-feeding fish should be avoided. Given the absence of documented captive husbandry, data on longevity, captive diet acceptance, and reproductive success in aquaria are not available.
Conservation
Priocharax pygmaeus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment recorded by FishBase as having been completed on 04 March 2021. The principal long-term risks for a specialist of intact rainforest streams in the western Amazon basin are the same as for Amazonian freshwater biodiversity generally: deforestation of riparian forest, siltation of stream beds, and changes to the hydrology and water chemistry of small watercourses as surrounding land use intensifies.
