Roeboides bussingi is a slender, largely transparent characid of the Pacific-slope drainages of Costa Rica and Panama, known in the field as the sardina de Bussing or alma seca — dry soul — names that capture its glassy, almost ethereal appearance. Described in 2013 from the Río Coloradito watershed of Puntarenas Province, it occupies lowland and foothill streams from sea level to roughly 118 metres elevation, where it forages in the water column on invertebrates and, like other members of its genus, may occasionally scrape scales from larger fish. It is assessed by the IUCN as Data Deficient.

Taxonomy & naming

Roeboides bussingi was formally described by Matamoros, Chakrabarty, Angulo, Garita-Alvarado, and McMahan in 2013, in a paper published in Neotropical Ichthyology. The type locality is the Río Coloradito, approximately 4 mi from the main road in Puntarenas Province, Costa Rica (8°34'12"N, 82°51'33"W), and the holotype is deposited at the Louisiana State University Museum of Natural Science as LSUMZ 14799. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes accepts Roeboides bussingi Matamoros, Chakrabarty, Angulo, Garita-Alvarado & McMahan, 2013 as the valid name; the species is placed in subfamily Characinae within the family Characidae.

The genus Roeboides was established for a group of South and Central American characids notable for their compressed, laterally deep bodies, reduced or absent scales in places, and a tendency toward lepidophagy — scale-eating — at least opportunistically. R. bussingi is one of several species diagnosed from the Pacific slope of Central America, and the 2013 paper provided an identification key, distribution map, and illustrations to distinguish it from congeners. The specific epithet honours the late Costa Rican ichthyologist William A. Bussing, who made foundational contributions to knowledge of the freshwater fishes of Costa Rica.

Morphology

Roeboides bussingi reaches a maximum recorded length of 3.5 in standard length (SL), making it a mid-sized member of its genus. The body plan is typical of Roeboides: laterally compressed and moderately deep-bodied, with a somewhat humped dorsal profile anterior to the dorsal fin. The scales are relatively small and the flanks appear translucent to silvery, giving the fish the glass-like quality alluded to by its local name sardina de vidrio.

Like other characins, R. bussingi bears a small adipose fin between the dorsal and the caudal. The teeth are developed for a carnivore: the outer teeth are enlarged and somewhat projecting, an arrangement associated with the scale-scraping habits documented in Roeboides species more broadly. Specific meristic data are provided in the original description but are not reproduced here from memory; the published paper and the CoF record are the appropriate references for counts.

Habitat

Roeboides bussingi is known from Pacific-slope drainages in southwestern Costa Rica and adjacent Panama, specifically documented from the Coto and San Pablo river systems. Within these catchments it has been collected at altitudes ranging from approximately 11 to 118 metres above sea level, occupying lowland and foothill stream environments. The type locality, Río Coloradito, is a tributary within the Puntarenas Province drainage network.

No detailed habitat-condition data specific to the species have been published. The Pacific-slope streams of this region are generally warm, and seasonality in rainfall drives pronounced wet- and dry-season fluctuations in flow, turbidity, and water levels. The species is described as benthopelagic in FishBase, consistent with a water-column forager operating near but not strictly on the substrate. Its occurrence across a modest altitudinal range suggests some tolerance of varied microhabitat conditions within its lowland-stream niche.

Feeding

FishBase assigns Roeboides bussingi a trophic level of 3.7, placing it firmly in the carnivore tier. Published data on the genus as a whole indicate that Roeboides species consume insect larvae and small crustaceans as their principal prey, with opportunistic or ontogenetically mediated scale-eating also documented. Scale-eating — lepidophagy — involves the fish approaching a larger host fish and scraping epidermal scales with its protruding outer teeth; it has been recorded in several Roeboides species and is considered at least a facultative strategy.

For R. bussingi specifically, detailed dietary studies have not been published in the accessible literature. Aquarists keeping related Roeboides species report that they accept small live and frozen invertebrate foods readily — bloodworm, brine shrimp, and Daphnia — and can be maintained on high-quality carnivore-formulated prepared foods supplemented with live prey. The scale-eating tendency is worth noting for aquarists planning community tanks: peaceful tankmates with intact, undamaged finnage are advisable.

Mating

No published mating observations specific to Roeboides bussingi exist in the available literature. For the genus Roeboides, studies indicate that spawning occurs year-round with a peak correlated with the wet season, a pattern common among characids in seasonal Central American river systems where rising water levels and food abundance cue reproductive activity.

Based on family-level biology, R. bussingi is presumed to be an open-water egg-scatterer with no parental care, as is typical of characid fishes. Males and females of similar-sized characins typically exhibit courtship chasing, with the female releasing eggs among fine-leaved vegetation or in open water as the male fertilises them externally. No courtship-specific behaviour has been documented for this species.

Breeding

Roeboides bussingi has not been reported as bred in captivity in the accessible hobbyist or scientific literature, and no specific breeding parameters are available. Based on the biology of Characidae broadly, eggs would be expected to be small and adhesive or semi-pelagic, scattered over vegetation or substrate without parental attendance, and the adults would likely consume eggs and larvae if not removed. Incubation periods and fry-rearing details remain undocumented for this species.

Aquarists wishing to attempt breeding would be advised to follow protocols developed for related species: a well-conditioned pair or small group, fine-leaved spawning media, separation of adults after spawning, and infusoria or rotifers as first foods for newly free-swimming fry. The wet-season peak in the wild suggests that simulating seasonal cues — gradual temperature increase, increased feeding, and possibly a small pH or conductivity shift — may help induce spawning.

In the aquarium

Roeboides bussingi is rarely encountered in the aquarium trade and is not currently established as a hobby species. Its potential for scale-eating is the principal husbandry consideration: any tank housing this species should contain robust companions with good body condition, and delicate long-finned varieties of common species are best avoided. The fish's moderate size — up to 3.5 in SL — and active, carnivorous temperament suggest a mid-to-large aquarium with good filtration and open swimming space.

Water conditions should reflect its natural Pacific-slope stream environment: warm tropical temperatures, moderate current, and clean, well-oxygenated water. No temperature or pH figures have been formally published for the species' habitat, so the general parameters for Central American stream characids — roughly 73–82 °F and pH 6.8–7.8 — provide a reasonable starting framework. The species would likely be of greatest interest to specialist collectors of Central American or Characinae fishes rather than general community aquarists.

Conservation

Roeboides bussingi is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated April 2019. Data Deficient status indicates that insufficient information exists to make a direct or indirect assessment of the species' extinction risk based on its distribution or population status; it does not imply that the species is not at risk.

The Pacific-slope drainages of southwestern Costa Rica and Panama, while currently retaining significant forest cover in parts, face ongoing pressures from agricultural conversion, particularly banana and pineapple plantations, and associated runoff and stream alteration. The species' restricted distribution — documented only from the Coto and San Pablo drainages — means that localised habitat degradation could have a disproportionate impact. Formal population surveys and habitat assessments are needed before a more definitive threat category can be assigned.
