Taxonomy & naming
Roeboides carti was described by Carlos Alberto Santos de Lucena in 2000. The genus Roeboides belongs to the family Characidae — a vast, species-rich family of New World characiform fishes. Within Characidae, Roeboides sits among a loose assemblage of scale-eating and scale-nipping genera sometimes grouped informally as the roeboidins, though the phylogenetic boundaries of this group have shifted with successive molecular analyses.
Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid binomial Roeboides carti Lucena, 2000. The type locality is in the coastal river drainages of the Comarca de San Blas (now Comarca Guna Yala), on the Caribbean-facing slopes of eastern Panama. As a species described in Roeboides and retained there, no parenthetical authority is required. No synonyms are currently recorded.
Morphology
Roeboides carti is a laterally compressed, silvery characid reaching a recorded maximum of 3.5 in standard length (male or unsexed; FishBase). Like other members of the genus it has an upturned or subterminal mouth armed with small, peg-like teeth well suited to plucking scales from host fish, and a somewhat deep, compressed body that gives it a profile reminiscent of a small piranha relative.
Detailed published meristics and colouration notes for this species are sparse in the accessible literature. The genus in general is characterised by a faint to moderate lateral stripe, a silvery to whitish body, and prominent eyes positioned high on the head. Data on distinguishing features between R. carti and sympatric or geographically proximate Roeboides species await a thorough revision.
Habitat
Roeboides carti is recorded from freshwater coastal river drainages of the Comarca Guna Yala (San Blas) in eastern Panama. These are relatively small, short-course rivers that drain the Caribbean slopes of the Serranía de San Blas, flowing through lowland tropical forest to the Caribbean coast. FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic and assigns it a tropical freshwater environment.
Specific habitat data — substrate preferences, depth range, water chemistry, and vegetation associations — have not been published in detail for this species. By analogy with other Roeboides in Central American coastal drainages, it likely inhabits clear to moderately turbid streams and rivers with moderate to slow flow, associating with areas where host fish are abundant enough to sustain scale-feeding.
Feeding
Roeboides belongs to a guild of obligate or facultative lepidophages — scale-eaters — and R. carti is presumed to share this feeding strategy. Scale-eating in Roeboides involves rapid lateral strikes against the flanks of other fish, detaching and consuming scales rather than killing the host. The behaviour is opportunistic in many species: captive individuals will accept conventional food items when host fish are unavailable or when introduced young.
Data on the specific prey fish preferred by R. carti in its Panamanian river systems are not published. The genus tends to associate with shoals of small characids and other schooling fish from which scales can be taken with minimal pursuit. Whether R. carti supplements scale-eating with invertebrate prey or plant matter, as some congeners do, is not documented.
Mating
No published observations of courtship behaviour exist specifically for Roeboides carti. For Roeboides in general, the genus is assumed to follow the open-water egg-scattering reproductive mode typical of small to mid-sized characids: spawning without construction of a nest, without guarding, and without pair bonding beyond the spawning act itself. Sexual differences in body proportions or fin development, as seen in some congeners, have not been documented for this species.
Given the species' obscure status in both wild ichthyology and the aquarium hobby, courtship accounts are entirely absent from the available literature.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Roeboides carti have been published, and the species is not kept in the ornamental fish trade in any meaningful numbers. Breeding biology is therefore inferred from the genus and family. Like other small characids, spawning is expected to be egg-scattering over vegetation or substrate, with adhesive or semi-buoyant eggs, no parental care, and adults likely to consume their own eggs if not separated.
Incubation times and fry development data are unknown for this species. Any hobbyist who obtains wild-collected specimens from the San Blas region and succeeds in spawning them would be contributing novel information to an extremely sparse dataset.
In the aquarium
Roeboides carti is not an established aquarium species and is essentially unknown in the hobby. It does not appear on commercial livestock lists, and no dedicated husbandry guides exist. The wider genus Roeboides has occasionally appeared in specialist collections, where keepers report that the scale-eating instinct creates serious compatibility problems: tankmates lose scales at a high rate, which opens wounds and stresses the host fish, making a standard community aquarium unsuitable.
Anyone working with R. carti would need to house it either as a species-only group or with robust, deep-bodied fish that are less vulnerable to lateral strikes. Feeding scale-eaters in captivity typically requires offering alternatives — small feeder fish for periods when the keeper wishes to reduce scale loss in display tankmates — or acceptance that scale-eating will occur continuously. Water conditions appropriate to the Panamanian Caribbean-slope environment (warm, soft to moderately hard tropical freshwater) are the reasonable starting point in the absence of published chemistry data for this species.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Roeboides carti as Least Concern (LC) in December 2019. The assessment reflects no known major threats to the species at that time; the Comarca Guna Yala region of Panama retains substantial forested catchment and the coastal rivers there are not heavily industrialised.
The species' range is nonetheless geographically restricted — confined to a relatively small cluster of Caribbean-slope drainages in eastern Panama — which in principle makes it sensitive to localised pressures such as deforestation, agricultural runoff, and any future infrastructure development in the Guna Yala coastal zone. Its obscurity in the scientific literature means that population trends are poorly monitored. The Least Concern status should be understood in the context of limited data rather than comprehensive survey coverage.
