Taxonomy & naming
Roeboides affinis was described by the German-born British ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1868, making it one of the older nominal species in the genus. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (CAS) records the valid name as Roeboides affinis (Günther, 1868), with the parenthetical authority indicating that Günther originally placed the species in a different genus before it was transferred to Roeboides.
The genus Roeboides Günther, 1864 belongs to the family Characidae and the order Characiformes, and is the only genus in the Americas that has evolved obligate or facultative scale-eating as a feeding mode. GBIF records the taxonomy as Characidae, Characiformes, confirming the family placement. Roeboides affinis is sometimes confused with congeners such as R. guatemalensis or R. xenodon, but its broad South American distribution and documented dietary biology distinguish it in the literature. No subspecies are currently recognised. The name Roeboides prognathus is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Roeboides affinis is an elongate, laterally compressed characin with a strongly developed lower jaw that projects slightly beyond the upper — an adaptation associated with its scale-eating behaviour. FishBase records a maximum of 4.5 in standard length. The body is largely translucent to silvery, with a bright lateral stripe running from behind the operculum to the caudal peduncle; this stripe and the semi-transparent flanks give the fish its common names. The scales are relatively small and the lateral line is complete.
The dentition is notable: the premaxillary and dentary teeth are enlarged and conical, suited to hooking onto the scales of prey fish without causing the prey fatal harm in a single attack. Studies have noted ontogenetic variation in the diet, with larger individuals (3.5–5.5 in) consuming proportionally more scales than juveniles, suggesting that the lepidophagous habit becomes more pronounced as the fish grows and its dentition strengthens. Habitat

Feeding
Roeboides affinis is a facultative lepidophage — a scale-eater — and this feeding mode is what makes the species biologically remarkable. The fish approaches a victim from behind or the side, scrapes scales from the flanks with a rapid strike of its protruding lower jaw, and then retreats; the victim is not killed or severely wounded, allowing repeated attacks on the same shoal.
Despite this specialisation, the diet is genuinely mixed. Its primary management challenge is the scale-eating behaviour: it will opportunistically rasp scales from soft-scaled tankmates, including characins, cichlids, and catfishes, potentially causing infections at the wound site even when attacks are not individually fatal. For this reason it is safest kept either as a species-only group or with thick-scaled or armoured tankmates such as larger loricariid catfishes.
The fish does well in a spacious, well-oxygenated aquarium that mimics its rheophilic native habitat — good flow, moderate to high oxygen, temperatures of 72–77 °F, and a pH of 6.0–7.5. It is an active, schooling species and should be kept in a group of six or more to reduce individual stress. It accepts a range of prepared and live foods in captivity but benefits from live or frozen invertebrates to maintain condition. Given its wide natural range and benthopelagic lifestyle, it is adaptable to a range of setups provided that tankmate compatibility is carefully managed.
Conservation
