Roeboides biserialis is a small scale-eating characid from the Amazon basin, a member of a genus whose members have evolved a predatory habit unusual among small tetras: scraping scales from the flanks of other fish. Reaching around 2 in standard length, it is a slender, laterally compressed fish with the oversized mouth and protruding teeth characteristic of scale-scrapers in the family Characidae. Taxonomy & naming

Roeboides biserialis was originally described by Samuel Garman in 1890. The valid name and authority, (Garman, 1890), are confirmed by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, the standard reference for characid nomenclature. The parenthetical authority indicates that Garman placed the species in a different genus at the time of description, and it was later transferred to Roeboides.

Roeboides is placed within the family Characidae and is the nominal genus of a loose assemblage of scale-eating tetras sometimes grouped under the subfamily Characinae. The genus occurs broadly across South America, with species distributed across the Amazon, Orinoco, and other major drainage systems. Taxonomy within Roeboides has been periodically revised, and species boundaries within the genus remain somewhat unsettled; molecular and morphological work over recent decades has refined placements but left several species with sparse records. Roeboides biserialis is one of the less frequently encountered members of the genus in both collections and the literature.

Morphology

Its scale-eating habit is the primary practical consideration for the aquarist: the species will damage and stress tankmates with accessible scales, and any fish with large, individual scales — including many cyprinids, cichlids, and larger tetras — should not be housed with it. It is best kept either as a species-only group or alongside fish with very small, tough scales or very different body morphology.

The species does best in a group of its own kind, which also distributes the scale-nipping behaviour and reduces stress on individual fish.
