Stichonodon insignis was described by Franz Steindachner in 1876, and because it was placed in a genus other than its current one at the time of description, the authority is rendered with parentheses: (Steindachner, 1876). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & van der Laan) recognises Stichonodon as a valid, monotypic genus within the family Characidae, with S. insignis as the only species.
The placement of the genus within the broad and notoriously polyphyletic Characidae has not always been stable. Monospecific genera in the Characidae often represent lineages that have resisted tidy placement in larger groups; Stichonodon is sometimes assigned to the subfamily Stevardiinae or treated as incertae sedis within the family depending on the phylogenetic analysis consulted. Because the site's family field records the family-level assignment and taxonomy in this group continues to be revised, the listing here follows the valid family name Characidae.
The genus name is composed of the Greek words stix (stikhos, a row or line) and odous (tooth), referencing the arrangement of teeth. The species epithet insignis is Latin for remarkable or distinguished, a common nineteenth-century epithet applied to species that caught a describer's eye.
