Taxonomy & naming
Bryconamericus phoenicopterus was described by the American palaeontologist and ichthyologist Edward Drinker Cope in 1872, with the type locality in the Amazon River basin. The valid name is recorded in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes as Bryconamericus phoenicopterus (Cope, 1872); the parenthetical authority indicates that Cope placed the species in a different genus at the time of description, and subsequent revisions transferred it to Bryconamericus.
The genus Bryconamericus belongs to the large and heterogeneous family Characidae, the characins, which radiate across Central and South America and Africa. FishBase places Bryconamericus in the subfamily Stevardiinae (Stevardiidae in some classifications), a grouping that encompasses a diverse array of small stream tetras. The genus itself contains well over a hundred described species, making it one of the larger characid genera, and many of its species are superficially similar — slender-bodied, silver-flanked, with a single adipose fin and no striking coloration — which has historically complicated both collection identification and the drawing of species boundaries.
Morphology
Bryconamericus phoenicopterus is a small, elongate characid reaching a reported maximum of 2.5 in total length. Like most members of the genus it has the typical small-tetra body plan: a moderately compressed, fusiform profile, a terminal mouth of modest size, a single dorsal fin, a small adipose fin, and a forked caudal fin. Coloration is silvery on the flanks, often with a faint lateral stripe or midlateral dark band, and paler on the belly.
The genus Bryconamericus is notoriously difficult to diagnose morphologically without reference to scale and fin-ray counts, gill-raker numbers, and the precise form of the premaxillary teeth. Distinguishing B. phoenicopterus from the many superficially similar congeners typically requires examination of meristic characters rather than external color. Sexual dimorphism is subtle; females of this size class in the genus tend to be fuller-bodied when gravid, but the species is not conspicuously dimorphic.
Habitat
Bryconamericus phoenicopterus is a freshwater, benthopelagic species of the Amazon River basin. The genus Bryconamericus is broadly distributed across lowland and foothill river systems in South America, and its members typically inhabit small to medium streams and river margins with moderate to gentle current, where they occupy the lower to mid water column near substrate and debris.
Water conditions across the Amazon basin vary widely, but small characids of this type generally occur in soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral freshwater, often in habitats with leaf litter, submerged wood, or dense marginal vegetation. Temperature across tropical lowland Amazonian streams falls broadly in the range of 72–82 °F (72–82 °F).
Feeding
Small Bryconamericus species are opportunistic omnivores that exploit the full range of small invertebrate prey available in stream environments — insect larvae, small crustaceans, zooplankton, and terrestrial insects that fall onto the water surface — together with algae and organic detritus. Their relatively small, multiserial mouth is suited to picking food items from the substrate or water column rather than pursuing larger prey.
In the aquarium, fish of this genus accept standard small-tetra foods without difficulty: quality flake and micro-pellets serve as a base, supplemented with frozen or live Daphnia, Cyclops, and similar small invertebrates. Live and frozen foods improve condition and are likely more important for any attempted breeding.
Mating
Bryconamericus phoenicopterus, like other small characids of its tribe, is an egg-scattering spawner that broadcasts adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs among fine-leaved aquatic plants or over a substrate of leaf litter and fine debris, with no parental care provided after spawning. Courtship is not elaborate — males pursue gravid females through vegetation, and spawning follows when a receptive female allows approach.
Spawning is typically triggered by soft, slightly acidic water, modest temperature increases, and the presence of fine-leaved plants or spawning mops. As with most small open-water egg-scatterers, the pair separates immediately after egg release, and both adults will consume the eggs if they remain in the spawning tank.
Breeding
Breeding Bryconamericus phoenicopterus follows the general pattern for small South American egg-scattering characids. A conditioned pair or small group is introduced to a dedicated breeding tank with soft, acidic water (pH around 6.0–6.8), temperature in the mid-20s Celsius, fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, and subdued lighting over a dark substrate.
Eggs are small and numerous, scattered among the plants and falling to the substrate. Because adults eat eggs readily, the spawning medium or eggs should be removed to a separate rearing container as soon as spawning is complete, or the adults should be netted out. Incubation lasts roughly 24–48 hours at typical temperatures; the tiny fry require infusoria or commercial liquid fry food as first foods before graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Data on this species specifically are sparse, and the general small-characid protocol serves as the working template.
In the aquarium
Bryconamericus phoenicopterus is seldom seen in the mainstream aquarium trade and is kept primarily by biotope enthusiasts recreating Amazonian stream communities and by hobbyists with a particular interest in the small-tetra fauna of South America. It is peaceful and best kept in a school of six or more individuals, where natural shoaling behavior is expressed and the fish are less shy.
A tank of 23.5 in or longer with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water, moderate current, subdued lighting, and a dark substrate or leaf-litter bed suits the species well. Temperatures of 72–82 °F (72–82 °F) and pH in the range of 6.0–7.5 cover its documented parameters. Tankmates should be similarly small and peaceful — other small characids, diminutive corydoras, and apistogramma pairs all make natural biotope companions. The species is hardy within its preferred range and presents no special dietary challenges.
Conservation
Bryconamericus phoenicopterus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, based on an assessment conducted on 22 April 2014 by Hernán Ortega Torres of the UNMSM Museo de Historia Natural. The LC designation reflects the species' apparently broad distribution across the Amazon River basin and the absence of evidence of rapid population decline or severe ongoing threats at a basin-wide scale.
The Amazon basin faces ongoing pressure from deforestation, mining-related sedimentation, agricultural runoff, and hydroelectric development, all of which affect small stream fish communities. Small, localized Bryconamericus populations in headwater streams can be vulnerable to habitat alteration at the local level even where the species is not threatened range-wide. No specific conservation measures target this species.
