Astyanax poetzschkei was described by Ernst Ahl in 1932, with the holotype deposited at the Zoological Museum Berlin (ZMB 20826). The type locality is the Amazon River. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) is the governing authority for the valid name, which is cited as Astyanax poetzschkei Ahl, 1932.
The genus Astyanax belongs to the subfamily Stethaprioninae within the family Characidae, though higher-level characid systematics have been substantially revised in recent decades. Astyanax is among the most speciose vertebrate genera, encompassing several hundred species distributed from the southwestern United States to Argentina, with major species richness in Amazonian and Atlantic Forest drainages. Distinguishing closely related Astyanax species frequently requires close examination of meristic counts and preserved material, and many names in the genus carry a history of synonymy and revision.
Morphology
