Taxonomy & naming
Aphyocharax pusillus was described by the German-British ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1868, with the type locality recorded as the Amazon River of Peru. The valid name, as registered in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, is Aphyocharax pusillus Günther, 1868; the authority is not parenthesised because the species has remained in Aphyocharax since its original description.
The genus Aphyocharax is placed within the family Characidae, the vast assemblage of New World characins. A taxonomic note from the IUCN assessment cautions that A. pusillus closely resembles its congener A. avary, and that a full genus-level revision will be needed to clarify the boundary between the two species. Pending that work, specimens identified in the field or trade as A. pusillus from the Orinoco drainage or western Amazonia may in some cases represent A. avary or undescribed taxa. The name Aphyocharax alburnus is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Aphyocharax pusillus is a small, streamlined characin with a moderately compressed body and the typical tetra profile: forked tail, adipose fin, and a relatively large eye for the head size. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 2.5 in, placing it at the upper end of the Aphyocharax size range but well within the "small tetra" category overall. The body is silvery, often with a subtle lateral iridescence; as in many Aphyocharax species the scales may catch light with a faint golden or brassy sheen.
Lateral-line scale counts and fin-ray meristics are the characters that separate Aphyocharax species from one another, but external colour differences between A. pusillus and A. avary are subtle enough that the IUCN flags ongoing confusion between them. Adults swim in loose aggregations in the upper to middle water column, adopting the upward-tilted resting posture common to many surface-feeding characins.
Habitat
Across its range in the western Amazon and Orinoco basins — spanning Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru — Aphyocharax pusillus inhabits streams, creeks, and slow-flowing rivers with clear, highly transparent water and medium levels of suspended sediment. Bottom structure in known localities includes sandy substrates with dense accumulations of submerged logs, leaf litter, and woody debris. The species is described as benthopelagic and tropical, occupying a warm freshwater zone without a strong preference for deep or fast-moving water.
The Biotope Aquarium Project has documented it from Caño Arabella and the Río Yavarí in its western Amazonian range. The IUCN characterises the broader habitat as freshwater wetlands, rivers, streams, and creeks, with fast current also recorded for some subpopulations — suggesting some breadth in flow-regime tolerance within the species' range.
Feeding
Aphyocharax pusillus is an opportunistic micropredator that feeds in the upper and middle water column. FishBase records the natural diet as worms, small insects, and small crustaceans — a generalist invertebrate diet typical of small characins that patrol surface and mid-water layers where terrestrial and aquatic prey alike become available.
In the aquarium the species accepts a wide range of standard prepared foods: quality micro-pellets, small flake, and frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, micro-worms, newly hatched brine shrimp, and Cyclops. A diet that includes live or frozen invertebrate prey maintains condition well and keeps the fish actively foraging, which is when schooling behaviour is most pronounced and most attractive to watch.
Mating
Aphyocharax pusillus reproduces by open egg-scattering, the ancestral reproductive mode of the family Characidae. Males are likely to show mild pursuit behaviour toward ripe females and may display against rival males, but no elaborate courtship ritual or territorial defence has been documented for this species specifically. Spawning takes place among fine-leaved plants or other structured cover.
As is typical for small characins of this guild, the species shows no pair bond and no parental care; adults scatter eggs and depart without attending them. The adhesive eggs settle or cling to vegetation and substrate, where they develop without protection.
Breeding
Breeding Aphyocharax pusillus in captivity follows the standard small-tetra protocol. Conditioned adults — fed generously on live and frozen invertebrates and kept in clean, well-oxygenated water — can be induced to spawn over fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or over synthetic spawning mops. A slight drop in temperature or a water change can trigger spawning activity.
Eggs are adhesive and small; adults will consume them if not removed. Breeders typically transfer the spawning medium to a separate hatching container or move the adults out after spawning. At tropical temperatures hatching occurs within a few days. The newly free-swimming fry require very small first foods — infusoria or commercial liquid fry preparations — before graduating to micro-worm or freshly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as they grow.
In the aquarium
Aphyocharax pusillus is well suited to the community aquarium. The Biotope Aquarium Project describes it as a beginner-friendly, peaceful, diurnal species that coexists comfortably with other small, non-aggressive fish. It is most comfortable and most visually interesting when kept as a school of six or more, which suppresses timidity and brings out natural mid-water swimming behaviour.
Water conditions should reflect its western Amazonian origins: clear, warm water (approximately 75–82 °F) with moderate to good filtration and some flow to ensure oxygenation. The species tolerates a range of pH and hardness, making it adaptable to most standard community-tank setups. A planted aquarium with open swimming space and subdued to moderate lighting suits it well. Peaceful tankmates of similar size — other small tetras, small corydoras, dwarf cichlids — are appropriate; boisterous or nippy species should be avoided.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Aphyocharax pusillus as Least Concern (LC) in 2021, noting a stable population trend and local abundance across its range. The assessment acknowledges threats including artisanal gold mining and deforestation, but classifies these as minor in scope relative to the species' broad distribution. The species is present in protected areas within its range.
A low level of collection for the ornamental fish trade — both national and international — is recorded, but trade pressure is not considered a significant threat at current levels. The primary scientific concern flagged by the assessment is taxonomic: the need for a comprehensive revision of Aphyocharax to resolve the boundary between A. pusillus and A. avary and to establish whether additional cryptic species are present within what is currently treated as one taxon.
