Xenagoniates bondi is a small, semi-transparent characid from the Orinoco basin and coastal drainages of Venezuela and Colombia — the sole member of its genus and one of the more unusual tetras to reach the aquarium trade. Known informally as the Glass Tetra with Golden Front for the glinting, translucent quality of its flanks and a golden-bronze wash on the anterior body, it occupies a monospecific genus within the subfamily Aphyocharacinae. Despite a wide natural range across the Orinoco lowlands, it is seldom seen in shops, and hobbyists who do keep it learn quickly that it can be a dedicated fin-nipper, especially with long-finned companions.

Taxonomy & naming

Xenagoniates bondi was described by George S. Myers in 1942, with the type locality given as the Río Amana, 4 mi east of Santa Barbara, Monagas state, Venezuela; the holotype is catalogued as CAS-SU 36486 at the California Academy of Sciences. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes accepts Xenagoniates Myers, 1942 as a valid monospecific genus within the subfamily Aphyocharacinae of the family Characidae. Because the species was placed in Xenagoniates when it was described, and has remained there, no parenthetical authority is used.

The genus name Xenagoniates derives from Greek roots broadly meaning 'strange-angled,' an allusion to certain body or jaw features that distinguish it from related genera. The specific epithet bondi honours the collector or sponsor of the type specimen, following a common nineteenth- and early twentieth-century practice of naming species after expedition patrons or collaborators. GBIF records the species as the only member of its genus, and occurrence data place it firmly in the Orinoco drainage system of northern South America.

Morphology

Xenagoniates bondi is an uncommon aquarium fish that remains a specialist's choice rather than a mainstream tetra. When available, it is best kept as a group of six or more individuals in a tank of at least 23.5 in in length; like many schooling characids, it is more settled and better-colored in a proper group than in small numbers. Water conditions should reflect its Orinoco origins: warm (68–79 °F), soft to moderately hard, and close to neutral in pH, with good filtration and some current.

The most important husbandry note is its reputation as a fin-nipper. Long-finned fish — angelfish, bettas, guppies, fancy livebearers — make poor companions, and even some short-finned species may be targeted if the group is underfed or understimulated. Better tankmates are similarly sized, active, short-finned characids, robust rasboras, and bottom-dwelling catfish that are not easily harassed. A planted aquarium with open swimming space and subdued to moderate lighting suits the species well and allows it to display the translucent body and golden-front coloration that make it distinctive. It is not commonly imported and may be difficult to source outside specialist importers.
