Taxonomy & naming
Clypeobarbus schoutedeni was described by Poll and Lambert in 1961. The species was originally placed in the genus Barbus in the broad historical sense in which that name was applied across nearly all African and Asian small cyprinids. Subsequent revisions progressively refined African barb taxonomy, and the genus Clypeobarbus — erected to accommodate a cluster of Congo-region barbs bearing a distinctive rostral cap — is now recognised as the valid placement under the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS).
The genus Clypeobarbus takes its name from the Latin clypeus (shield) and barbus (barb), a reference to the hard keratinised rostral plate that distinguishes members of the genus from soft-snouted African barbs. The epithet schoutedeni honours Henri Schouteden (1881–1972), Belgian zoologist and long-serving director of the Musée Royal de l'Afrique Centrale in Tervuren, who made substantial contributions to the study of Central African fauna. The parenthetical authority — (Poll & Lambert, 1961) — records that the species was moved from its original genus after the original description.
Morphology
Clypeobarbus schoutedeni is a moderately built, fusiform barb of small to medium size, typical of the genus in having a hard rostral cap covering the upper snout. This keratinised plate is an adaptation for grazing biofilm, periphyton and algae from rock surfaces in flowing water, and is the defining character of Clypeobarbus.
Body colouration in the genus is generally silvery to olive-bronze on the flanks, often with darker scale margins producing a reticulate or latticed pattern, and a pale underside. Detailed colouration and precise size for C. schoutedeni specifically are not well documented in the accessible literature; data are sparse for this species.
Habitat
Clypeobarbus schoutedeni is native to the Congo basin of Central Africa. Members of the genus Clypeobarbus are typically associated with flowing-water habitats — rivers, larger streams and their tributaries — where hard, rocky or rubble substrates provide surfaces for biofilm grazing. The rostral cap is an adaptation to this foraging niche in current-prone environments.
Water conditions across the Congo basin vary considerably by sub-basin, but river waters in the central lowland Congo are characteristically soft, with low pH and low conductivity, especially in forest-influenced reaches. The specific water-chemistry tolerances of C. schoutedeni have not been quantified in the available literature.
Feeding
The keratinised rostral cap of Clypeobarbus species is a clear adaptation for scraping biofilm, periphyton and algae from hard substrates in flowing water. Extrapolating from the biology of the genus and of barbs generally, spawning would be expected to follow the standard egg-scattering pattern: adhesive eggs scattered over the substrate or among vegetation, no parental care, and adults best removed after spawning to prevent egg predation.

Should the species become available, an aquarium reflecting its riverine Congo habitat would be appropriate: moderate to good flow, rocky or smooth-stone décor offering surfaces for biofilm grazing, soft and slightly acidic to neutral water, and tropical temperatures consistent with the central Congo basin. A diet emphasising algae, spirulina-based foods and biofilm-grazed décor would suit the scraping morphology of the rostral cap.
Conservation
The conservation status of Clypeobarbus schoutedeni has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List based on available information; no assessment was located during research for this article. Many small, narrowly distributed Central African barbs remain Data Deficient or unevaluated simply because baseline survey data are lacking.
The Congo basin faces growing pressures from artisanal and commercial mining (which delivers heavy-metal runoff and physical habitat disturbance into river systems), expanding agriculture and associated erosion, and increased fishing intensity. For a species with a limited and poorly known range in this basin, these pressures represent plausible threats even in the absence of a formal assessment.
