Enteromius ansorgii is a small schooling barb from West and Central Africa, described by George Albert Boulenger in 1904 from the rivers of Angola and the Congo basin. A modest and undemanding cyprinid, it inhabits flowing headwater streams and forest-edged savanna rivers where soft to moderately hard, acidic to near-neutral water runs over gravel and fine substrate. Like its congeners, it is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner with no parental care, and its streamlined, active build suits the open midwater of a cohesive shoal. The species circulated in older aquarium literature under the former combinations Barbus ansorgii and Systomus ansorgii before the Catalog of Fishes consolidated most African small barbs into Enteromius.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius ansorgii was described by Boulenger in 1904, with the type locality in the rivers of Angola or the Congo basin region. The species has passed through several generic combinations as barb taxonomy has been revised: it was formerly listed as Barbus ansorgii and later as Systomus ansorgii, names that appear in older aquarium literature and early museum catalogues. The current valid combination, Enteromius ansorgii (Boulenger, 1904), follows the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the authoritative source for valid names. The parenthetical around Boulenger's name marks the transfer out of the genus in which he originally described the species.

The genus Enteromius accommodates a large assemblage of small to medium African barbs that were historically lumped under the broadly defined Barbus. The epithet ansorgii is a Latinised genitive honouring a collector or naturalist associated with the original specimens — most likely the British ornithologist and explorer William Harry Ansorge, who collected extensively in Angola and West Africa around the turn of the twentieth century and whose name recurs in several taxa from the region.

Morphology

Enteromius ansorgii is a small barb, reaching an estimated 1.5–2.5 in in standard length. The body is slender and moderately compressed, typical of a schooling stream fish built for sustained midwater cruising rather than burst predation. The coloration in live specimens is reported to include reddish or orange tints on the fins — the basis for the common name "East African red finned barb" — over a pale silvery to gold-toned flank.

The species shares the basic cyprinid plan of a single short dorsal fin, subterminal mouth, and no true spines. Detailed meristic data from the original description are the authoritative record; the general build is consistent with other small Enteromius from West and Central African headwater streams. Sexual dimorphism is typical for the genus: females become distinctly fuller-bodied when gravid, while males tend to be slimmer and may display more intense fin pigmentation during courtship.

Habitat

The native range of Enteromius ansorgii spans West and Central Africa, centred on Angola and the Congo basin, where it occurs in flowing headwater streams and moderate-flow savanna and forest rivers. These systems typically run over gravel, sand and leaf litter, often with marginal aquatic or overhanging riparian vegetation providing cover and invertebrate food.

Water chemistry across this range varies from soft, acidic forest streams to moderately harder savanna and plateau rivers. Soft to moderately hard water (roughly 5–12 dGH) with pH in the range of 6.0–7.2 and temperatures of approximately 72–79 °F reflects the conditions found across the species' range. The fish is likely adapted to some seasonal variation in flow and chemistry consistent with the wet/dry cycle that characterises much of the sub-equatorial African savanna zone.

Feeding

Enteromius ansorgii is an omnivore in the broad sense typical of small Enteromius. In its natural streams it grazes on filamentous algae and biofilm from rock and substrate surfaces, picks up small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, crustaceans and worms — and processes organic detritus. This combination of algae-grazing and invertebrate foraging is characteristic of small barbs occupying shallow, productive African stream habitats.

In the aquarium the species accepts a wide range of standard foods: good-quality flake and small pellets for the nutritional base, with live or frozen supplementary items such as bloodworm, brine shrimp and daphnia to maintain condition and colour. Some vegetable matter — blanched spinach, algae-based foods — reflects the plant component of the wild diet and can help maintain digestive health.

Mating

Enteromius ansorgii follows the egg-scattering, non-guarding reproductive strategy universal to barbs. There is no permanent pair bond, no nest construction, and no territorial holding beyond the brief courtship sequence. When a female is gravid and conditions are right, one or more males pursue her actively through the water column and among available plants or gravel, the group pressing together as eggs and milt are released simultaneously.

The eggs are adhesive and scatter onto fine-leaved plants, among gravel interstices, or over the substrate surface, where they are immediately abandoned. Adults actively consume eggs given access to the spawning site, which drives the aquarium practice of separating the sexes or removing adults promptly after spawning.

Breeding

In the aquarium Enteromius ansorgii can be bred using the standard approach for small African egg-scattering barbs. A shallow conditioning tank with soft, slightly acidic water (pH 6.0–7.0), a spawning mop or fine-leaved plants, and a mesh or marble layer to protect fallen eggs from the adults provides the essential setup. Fish are conditioned on varied live and frozen foods before being introduced together; spawning typically follows in the morning.

A gravid female may deposit several hundred adhesive eggs in a session. Because the adults show no parental care and will eat eggs and fry on sight, they should be removed immediately after spawning. Eggs hatch within approximately a day to a day and a half at 75–79 °F. The larvae absorb their yolk sac and become free-swimming within a few days, at which point they take infusoria and later newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. Growth is steady under good water quality.

In the aquarium

Enteromius ansorgii is an active, peaceful schooling barb best suited to a species tank or a community of similarly sized, non-aggressive fishes. Like all small schooling barbs, it should be kept in groups of at least six to eight individuals to allow normal shoaling behaviour and reduce inter-fish stress; solitary or paired specimens become shy and more prone to stress-related ailments.

The aquarium should offer open midwater swimming space alongside some planting and areas of moderate cover. Water conditions reflecting the species' Central African stream origin — soft to moderately hard, pH 6.0–7.2, temperature 72–79 °F, with good filtration and regular water changes — will keep the fish in optimal colour and condition. The species is undemanding as to diet, tolerant of a reasonable range of conditions, and active enough to be an engaging display fish when kept in numbers. It is not a common species in the aquarium trade but is occasionally offered through specialist African fish importers.

Conservation

Enteromius ansorgii has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). Based on its reported distribution across the rivers of Angola and the Congo basin — a broad range with no documented range collapse or acute exploitation pressure — the species is presumed to be relatively secure, though the absence of a formal assessment means this remains unconfirmed.

The Congo basin and associated Angolan river systems face ongoing pressures including deforestation, habitat modification from agriculture and infrastructure projects, and localised pollution. Small barbs with restricted distributions within these broader systems could be vulnerable to such changes. Formal assessment of Enteromius ansorgii and its congeners would clarify whether any populations warrant conservation attention.
