Enteromius baudoni was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1918 from material collected in the Congo Basin. The species was originally placed — as were nearly all African and Asian small barbs of its era — in the broad, paraphyletic genus Barbus or the closely allied Puntius, names applied loosely across a diverse array of small cyprinids. The valid combination recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is Enteromius baudoni (Boulenger, 1918), with the parenthetical authority signalling the transfer out of the original genus.
The genus Enteromius was resurrected and redefined as part of the broader revision of the old Puntius complex following the landmark molecular and morphological work of Pethiyagoda et al. (2012), which demonstrated that 'Puntius' in its former sense was polyphyletic. Enteromius as currently constituted holds a large number of small African barb species — many described from single or few localities — and the group's internal classification continues to be refined as further material and analyses become available. Earlier literature may list the species under Barbus baudoni or Puntius baudoni.
Morphology
Enteromius baudoni is a small, slender barb reaching a maximum recorded standard length of approximately 1.5 in. Like other members of the genus it has the typical cyprinid body plan: a moderately compressed, fusiform shape suited to life in flowing water, a terminal or slightly subterminal mouth, and the characteristic single dorsal fin placed roughly at mid-body. No detailed morphological description of the species' colouration or fin formula is captured in currently available sources, and the fish has not been described in detail in the hobbyist or popular scientific literature.
Sexual dimorphism, if present, is presumed to follow the pattern common to small African barbs: females becoming noticeably fuller in the abdomen when gravid, while males remain slimmer. Data on detailed meristics and colouration of live specimens remain sparse.
Habitat
The species is recorded from the Congo Basin of Central Africa, one of the world's largest and most biodiverse river systems. Within this basin, small Enteromius species typically occupy flowing streams, river margins, and tributary headwaters rather than the deep main channel, often associating with submerged vegetation, root tangles, or leaf litter over sandy or gravelly substrates.
The Congo Basin encompasses an extraordinary range of habitat types, from fast-flowing upland streams to broad, slow lowland tributaries, but the smaller barb species tend to favour well-oxygenated, moderately flowing sections. Water chemistry in these habitats varies but is often soft and slightly acidic in forest-stream contexts, reflecting the organic matter inputs characteristic of equatorial rainforest drainage. Specific water-parameter data for the collection locality of E. baudoni have not been published in accessible sources.
Feeding
Enteromius baudoni, like the broad majority of small African barbs, is presumed to be a zoophagous opportunist in the wild, taking small invertebrates, zooplankton, organic detritus, and benthic matter from the substrate and water column. The short-bodied, active build typical of these barbs suits continuous low-level foraging through substrate and vegetation rather than active pursuit of larger prey. Mating
Enteromius baudoni is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in the manner of virtually all barbs. No nest is built, no territory is held beyond a brief courtship pursuit, and no pair bond persists after spawning. When fish are in spawning condition, a driving male pursues a gravid female through fine-leaved vegetation or over gravel and sandy substrate; the two press together momentarily as eggs and milt are released simultaneously into the water column or among plants.
The eggs are adhesive and fall to the bottom or adhere to plant surfaces. Adults take no interest in eggs or larvae after spawning, and in the wild the eggs are vulnerable to predation — including by the spawning fish themselves. Seasonal breeding is likely triggered by rises in water temperature and increases in water level associated with wet-season flood pulses in the Congo drainage.
Breeding
In keeping with all barbs, Enteromius baudoni produces adhesive, scattered eggs with no parental care of any kind: no guarding, no mouthbrooding, no bubble-nest. Spawning in the wild is likely timed to seasonal cues — rising water levels, increased food availability, and warming temperatures associated with the wet season in Central Africa — which synchronise the activity of many small stream fishes in the Congo system.
No captive-breeding accounts for this species have been documented in the accessible hobbyist or scientific literature. By analogy with similar small Enteromius that have been bred in aquaria, a soft, slightly warm water setup with fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, separation of adults after spawning to protect the eggs, and feeding of hatched fry on infusoria and micro-foods would be the standard approach. Fecundity data are not available for the species.
In the aquarium
Enteromius baudoni is not an established aquarium fish and is unlikely to appear in the mainstream trade. Its small size — under 1.5 in — and inconspicuous appearance have not attracted commercial collection or captive breeding programmes, and it has not been featured in hobbyist publications. As a Congo Basin stream fish it would, in principle, be suited to a soft-water, well-oxygenated biotope setup reflecting Central African river conditions, kept in a small shoal with other similarly sized, peaceful species.
For the specialist interested in the African small-barb fauna, the Congo Basin offers a remarkable array of Enteromius species, many of which share similar requirements and could be maintained together under appropriate conditions. However, detailed husbandry guidance specific to E. baudoni is not available, and the species should be considered data sparse from an aquarium perspective.
Conservation
Enteromius baudoni has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no published conservation status. The species is small, restricted to the Congo Basin, and has not attracted the scientific attention that would generate an IUCN assessment. Many small, single-basin African barbs fall into the 'Not Evaluated' or 'Data Deficient' category simply because survey effort and systematic coverage of the region's freshwater fish fauna remain incomplete.
The Congo Basin faces growing pressure from logging, mining, agricultural encroachment, and associated sedimentation and water-quality degradation of its stream networks. Small, stream-dependent barbs with limited ranges are inherently vulnerable to habitat alteration, even where no direct exploitation occurs. Without more comprehensive survey data on E. baudoni's actual range, population size, and ecology, its conservation needs cannot be properly evaluated.
