Enteromius camptacanthus, the African redfinned barb, is a medium-sized African cyprinid reaching around 6 in in total length, distributed across a broad sweep of west-central African river systems from the Niger delta south through Cameroon to the Congo Basin and the Chiloango River. It is a benthopelagic riverine fish of flowing freshwater, recognisable among its relatives by a subinferior mouth and two long, unequal pairs of barbels, and it inhabits the warm, well-oxygenated waters of forest and savanna streams across one of Africa's most biodiverse freshwater regions. Originally described by Bleeker in 1863 as Barbus camptacanthus, the species was later moved into the large sub-Saharan African genus Enteromius, where it sits alongside hundreds of similar small to medium barbs endemic to the continent's river systems.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius camptacanthus was described by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1863, originally under the genus Barbus — the broad catch-all genus that accommodated virtually all Old World barb-like cyprinids through much of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The parenthetical authority in the valid name, (Bleeker, 1863), records that transfer out of the original genus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the valid combination as Enteromius camptacanthus.

Enteromius is a large, predominantly African genus that was resurrected and redefined as part of the broader reclassification of the subfamily Barbinae following molecular and morphological work on African cyprinids. Most of what was historically called Barbus in sub-Saharan Africa now falls within Enteromius; the old combination Barbus camptacanthus appears widely in earlier literature and in aquarium trade references. The specific epithet camptacanthus derives from Greek roots referring to the spine — an allusion to the prominent dorsal spine that characterises the species.

Morphology

Enteromius camptacanthus reaches a maximum recorded total length of approximately 6 in, making it a moderately large representative of the African Enteromius. The body form is the typical laterally compressed, moderately deep barb shape suited to riverine life. The mouth is subinferior — positioned slightly beneath the snout — consistent with a bottom-oriented feeding habit, and the species is equipped with two pairs of barbels that are notably long and unequal in length, a useful diagnostic character in the field.

FishBase records the species as benthopelagic, occupying the water column from just above the substrate up into open water in streams and rivers. Coloration details from wild specimens are sparse in the available literature, but the common name "African redfinned barb" suggests reddish pigmentation in the fins, a trait shared with several west-central African Enteromius. Sexual dimorphism has not been formally characterised in the literature accessible here.

Habitat

The species is native to freshwater river systems across a substantial area of west-central Africa: from the Niger delta eastward through southern Nigeria, Cameroon, and the Sanaga basin, southward into the Congo Basin, and west to the Chiloango River system on the border of the Republic of Congo and the Democratic Republic of Congo. This is a biogeographically rich region bridging the Guinea–Congolian forest zone and the surrounding savannas, and it encompasses a wide variety of stream and river types.

The species is recorded as a freshwater fish with no euryhaline tendencies, inhabiting rivers and streams rather than standing waters.

Feeding

Enteromius camptacanthus is an omnivore in the manner typical of most African riverine barbs, exploiting a range of benthic and water-column food sources. The subinferior mouth and barbels point to a bottom-feeding component, likely including insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and organic detritus gleaned from the substrate, supplemented by algae and plant matter in the water column or at the surface of submerged wood and rocks.

No detailed dietary study of this species appears in the accessible literature, but the guild to which it belongs — medium-bodied, benthopelagic African Enteromius in large tropical river systems — are characteristically opportunistic, adjusting their diet seasonally as floodwaters recede or advance and as invertebrate prey becomes available or scarce.

Mating

Enteromius camptacanthus, like all barbs, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner with no pair bond and no parental investment beyond the act of fertilisation. In large west-central African river systems, spawning in barbs of this size class is typically linked to seasonal cues — rising water levels associated with the rainy season, warming or cooling of water temperatures, and the availability of suitable spawning substrates such as gravel runs, submerged vegetation, or flooded marginal vegetation.

Courtship follows the barb pattern: a driving male pursues a gravid female, and eggs and milt are released together over or among the chosen substrate. No territory is defended and no nest is constructed. The eggs are adhesive and scattered, after which both fish disperse and take no further role.

Breeding

No detailed captive breeding account for Enteromius camptacanthus appears in the hobby literature reviewed here, and the species is not regularly encountered in the ornamental trade. Based on its size and biology it is likely to follow the standard pattern for medium-bodied African barbs: a separate spawning vessel with clean, moderately soft and warm water, a fine-gravel or plant-covered bottom, and a well-conditioned pair or group introduced at dusk or when a water change mimics a temperature shift.

Eggs are adhesive and scattered; adults should be removed promptly as they will consume the spawn. Larvae are expected to hatch within one to two days at tropical temperatures and become free-swimming within a further few days, at which point small live foods such as infusoria and newly hatched brine shrimp are appropriate first foods. The species' moderate size suggests it will mature in one to two years under good conditions.

In the aquarium

Enteromius camptacanthus is not a widely traded aquarium fish and is rarely encountered outside specialist African fish circles or public aquaria. Its natural range spans some of Africa's richest river systems, and specimens reach the hobby only occasionally through specialist importers. Given its size — up to around 6 in — it requires a spacious aquarium, and its active riverine nature calls for good water flow and oxygenation.

The water parameters recorded for the species (72–82 °F, pH 6.8–7.8, soft to moderately hard) are broadly compatible with a well-maintained community of other west-central African fishes. A sandy or fine-gravel substrate suits the subinferior mouth and bottom-feeding habits, and the tank should include hiding places among driftwood or rocks. The species is likely a shoaler in nature and would benefit from being kept in groups rather than as isolated individuals.

Conservation

Enteromius camptacanthus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List. The assessment reflects a wide distribution across multiple major river systems — Niger, Congo, Chiloango, and associated drainages — with no evidence of range-wide population decline sufficient to meet threatened category thresholds. The breadth of this range, spanning several large and relatively intact tropical river systems, provides a degree of resilience that many narrowly endemic African barbs lack.

Nonetheless, the Congo Basin and adjacent west-central African watersheds face growing pressure from artisanal and commercial fishing, deforestation, agricultural runoff, and mining activities, all of which degrade water quality and riparian habitat. The Niger delta is one of the most heavily impacted freshwater ecosystems in Africa due to oil extraction and associated pollution. While the species' wide range buffers it against localised threats, monitoring of population trends in impacted sub-basins would be prudent as development pressure on these river systems intensifies.
