The blue gularis is one of the largest and most spectacular killifish in the West African rainforest belt — a heavily built, vividly coloured substrate-spawner whose males carry a mosaic of blues, greens, reds, and golds that rivals any fish in the hobby. Native to the Niger delta, coastal rainforests of southeastern Nigeria, and adjacent southwestern Cameroon, it inhabits raphia swamps and temporary forest pools where soft, acidic water percolates through waterlogged peat and leaf litter. The IUCN now lists it as Endangered under criterion B2ab(iii), citing ongoing habitat loss within a restricted range, and it is increasingly absent from many of the coastal localities where collectors once found it in abundance.

Taxonomy & naming

Fundulopanchax sjostedti was first described by the Swedish zoologist Einar Lönnberg in 1895 from material collected in what is now southern Nigeria; the authority is presented in parentheses because the species has since been reassigned from its original genus. For much of the twentieth century it was placed in Aphyosemion — the large, catch-all West African killifish genus — and circulated in the hobby literature and trade as Aphyosemion sjoestedti (the variant spelling reflecting German transliteration conventions). Subsequent molecular and morphological revisions pulled the larger-bodied, substrate-spawning West African species into Fundulopanchax, where they are now maintained by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong), the authority for valid names followed here.

Fundulopanchax is a diverse genus of Nigerian and Cameroonian killifish encompassing both annual and non-annual species. F. sjostedti belongs to the non-annual group — it does not require a strict diapause, though its eggs are tolerant of extended damp-substrate incubation. Multiple colour forms exist in the wild and in captivity; a compact strain sometimes labelled 'Dwarf Red' circulates in the trade alongside the more commonly encountered full-size forms. These colour varieties likely reflect the genuine genetic heterogeneity of populations spread across a mosaic of forest drainages, but no formal subspecific names are currently recognised.

Morphology

The blue gularis is a large and powerfully built killifish. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 5 in, with 5.5 in total length reported; some aquarium strains, particularly the larger Nigerian river forms, have been said to approach 6–7 in in optimal conditions, though the 5 in SL figure is the most robust published measurement. The body is elongate and moderately compressed, with a somewhat flattened dorsal profile and a large, upturned mouth suited to surface and mid-water feeding.

Colouration in males is among the most complex in the genus. The flanks carry a reticulate or spotted pattern of bright blue, turquoise, and green overlaid with red and orange spots or chevrons; the fins extend this palette with long, filamentous tips in large males. Females are considerably plainer — a drab brownish or olive base with faint spotting — and substantially smaller. The caudal fin of fully coloured males is lyrate or rounded with filamentous extensions, an important diagnostic character that separates this species at a glance from the smaller Fundulopanchax species with which it shares some of its range.

Habitat

The blue gularis is a fish of West African coastal lowlands. Its native range centres on the Niger delta and the rainforest zone of southeastern Nigeria, with records extending into southwestern Cameroon; populations have also been reported from Ghana, though whether these represent native range extensions or introductions is unclear. Within this geography it is strongly associated with slow-moving or static forest water: raphia-palm swamps, seasonal pools in coastal rainforest, roadside ditches cutting through waterlogged forest, and the margins of slow streams where overhanging vegetation shades the water and leaf litter accumulates on the bottom.

Water chemistry in these habitats is characteristically soft and moderately acidic to neutral. FishBase records a pH range of 6.0–8.0 and a hardness of 5–19 dH for the species, with temperatures of 73–79 °F (73–79 °F). The softer, more acidic end of this range reflects the natural tannin-stained water of intact forest; pH approaching 8.0 is more typical of disturbed or agricultural areas where run-off has altered the chemistry. The habitat is classed as temporary in places — seasonal water-table fluctuations can leave pools damp rather than standing, which is ecologically relevant to the species' egg biology.

Feeding

Like most killifish, F. sjostedti is a carnivore in the wild, feeding on aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms, and surface-fallen insects — that are abundant in the leaf-litter swamps it inhabits. Its large size and substantial gape give it access to prey items that smaller West African killies cannot tackle; in the wild it likely takes small fish opportunistically.

In captivity the blue gularis accepts a broad range of foods with little hesitation. Live and frozen foods — bloodworm, white mosquito larvae, Daphnia, Artemia, and small earthworms — are taken greedily and provide the nutritional variety needed to maintain full colour and breeding condition in adults. High-quality dried foods formulated for carnivorous fish are also accepted, though a diet relying too heavily on dried food alone tends to produce duller coloration and reduced spawning activity. Given its size, tankmates and offspring alike are at risk of being eaten; it is best fed separately or in a species setup.

Mating

Fundulopanchax sjostedti is a substrate spawner rather than a bubble-nester or mouthbrooder. Pairs engage in side-by-side courtship drives, with males displaying fully extended fins to advertise their coloration and size. Spawning occurs close to or at the substrate — typically among plant roots, leaf litter, peat, or fibrous mop material — where the female deposits individual eggs that the male fertilises.

The species is not a strict annual; males do not compete for a single short spawning window tied to habitat desiccation, and pairs in the aquarium will spawn repeatedly over extended periods when condition is good. Sexual dimorphism is pronounced: males are strikingly larger and more vividly coloured, and the difference in body size means that a poorly conditioned or poorly matched female can be harassed. In a colony or group setting, the dominant male's colour intensifies and subordinate males are suppressed; a ratio of at least two females per male is advisable.

Breeding

Spawning occurs over or into a soft substrate — peat moss, coconut fibre, or Java moss — or into fine-threaded nylon mops placed near the bottom. Eggs are collected by the female's downward curl into the substrate after each embrace. Breeders commonly remove eggs weekly, either by lifting the spawning mop or scooping peat and squeezing it into a separate container.

The eggs of F. sjostedti are tolerant of extended incubation in a way that places the species between the strict annual and strictly water-incubated plant-spawners. Seriously Fish reports successful hatching after 10–12 weeks of wetting following peat incubation; some hobbyists store eggs in barely damp peat at 70–75 °F for this period before adding water to trigger hatching, while others hatch eggs directly in shallow water with aeration. The Aquarium Co-Op breeding community records a 6–12 week incubation range as typical. Fry are large enough at hatching to take Artemia nauplii or microworm immediately, and grow rapidly in warm, well-fed conditions.

In the aquarium

The blue gularis is one of the classic large West African killifish in the specialist hobby. Its size demands more space than is typically allocated to killifish — a single pair is most comfortably housed in a 23.5–31.5 in tank or larger, well-planted and dimly lit to reduce stress and encourage colour development. A dark substrate of fine sand or peat, dense plant growth or floating plants to diffuse surface light, and a layer of leaf litter all suit the species and encourage natural behaviour.

Water chemistry should remain soft and slightly acidic to neutral: pH 6.0–7.5, hardness below 15 dH, and temperature 73–79 °F. The species is not demanding about filtration intensity but does need clean water; a sponge filter or gentle power filter is appropriate. An absolutely tight-fitting lid is mandatory — like all killifish, it is an accomplished jumper. The relatively peaceful temperament toward other large fish that cannot be eaten makes it possible to keep with robust, similarly sized species, though a species-only or pair setup is preferable for breeding. Aggression between males is significant; two males in a small tank will fight to exhaustion.

Multiple colour forms circulate in the hobby, and strains can be difficult to source outside of killifish society auctions and specialist breeders. The 'Dwarf Red' form reaches a smaller maximum size and is sometimes more readily available commercially. Because the species is Endangered in the wild, captive maintenance of clean, uncontaminated strains has conservation value — hobbyists are encouraged to source fish from documented bloodlines and to avoid hybridisation with related Fundulopanchax species.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Fundulopanchax sjostedti as Endangered (EN) under criterion B2ab(iii) on 09 September 2019. The listing reflects a restricted area of occupancy within a range that is continuing to decline in quality: the coastal rainforest and raphia swamp habitats of the Niger delta and southeastern Nigeria are among the most heavily modified ecosystems in West Africa, subject to petroleum extraction and spills, agricultural conversion, urban expansion, logging, and drainage of seasonal wetlands. Cameroon populations face comparable pressures from forest clearance and conversion of coastal lowlands.

The species' reliance on intact, soft-water forest pools and raphia swamps makes it acutely sensitive to land-use change: drainage or contamination of even a modest number of its widely scattered small habitat patches can represent a significant proportional loss of its total range. Niger delta crude oil spills have directly affected some of its known localities. The species does not appear on any CITES appendix and there is no targeted in-situ conservation programme for it, though its popularity in the killifish hobby means that self-sustaining captive populations are distributed internationally among specialist breeders — a form of de facto ex-situ conservation, though one without formal coordination.
