Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius castrasibutum was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1936 from material collected at Fort Sibut, a town on the Ouaka River in what is now the Central African Republic. The type locality places the species within the Ubangi drainage, itself a major tributary of the middle Congo River. The parenthetical authority — (Fowler, 1936) — indicates that the species was originally described under a different genus name and has since been transferred to Enteromius.
Enteromius is a large and taxonomically complex genus of African small barbs placed by recent workers in the subfamily Smiliogastrinae within the family Cyprinidae. The genus encompasses a great many species across sub-Saharan Africa, many of them with restricted ranges, and a number of older Barbus and Puntius combinations have been referred here. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the current valid combination Enteromius castrasibutum. A 2020 phylogenetic study of Enteromius from the Awash River system in Ethiopia illustrates the breadth of genus-level diversity in this group across the continent, though E. castrasibutum is separated by the Congo basin and has no known connection to the East African fauna.
Morphology
Enteromius castrasibutum is a small, fusiform barb reaching a maximum recorded total length of 2 in. It has a typical small-barb body plan: moderately elongate and laterally compressed, with a rounded snout, small subterminal mouth, and the single dorsal fin and forked caudal fin common to cyprinids of this size. Well-defined spots on the flanks are noted in the original description and by FishBase, a pattern that is widespread in the genus and likely functions in conspecific recognition or disruption of the fish's outline in dappled stream light.
Beyond body shape, spot pattern, and maximum size, detailed morphometric and meristic data from the original description have not been widely re-examined in the literature available to this account. The species' small size, benthopelagic habits, and tropical freshwater distribution are consistent with other smallish Enteromius barbs of the Congo system.
Habitat
The only confirmed locality for Enteromius castrasibutum is Fort Sibut on the Ouaka River, a tributary of the Ubangi and thus part of the broader Congo River basin. The area lies in the Central African Republic, a region of Guinea-Congolian forest and derived savanna where smaller rivers and streams typically carry warm, soft to moderately hard tropical freshwater over sandy or silty substrates.
No specific water-chemistry data have been published for E. castrasibutum's habitat. By analogy with other small Enteromius of the Congo basin and the Ubangi system's general hydrochemistry — soft to mildly mineralised, warm, slightly acidic to near-neutral — the species likely occupies shallow, slow-flowing or seasonally fluctuating watercourses with abundant marginal vegetation, leaf litter, and organic substrate. Whether it persists beyond the type locality is unknown.
Feeding
No dietary studies specific to Enteromius castrasibutum are available. Like the great majority of small Enteromius barbs, it is presumed to be an omnivore in the wild, taking small benthic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms, and microcrustaceans — along with algae, plant fragments, and organic detritus. The benthopelagic designation in FishBase is consistent with a fish that forages close to and on the substrate in shallow freshwater environments.
In any aquarium setting, standard omnivore feeding with a mix of small dried foods and occasional live or frozen invertebrates would cover the dietary requirements of a fish of this size and type.
Mating
No behavioural observations of courtship or spawning have been published for Enteromius castrasibutum. As a member of the barb family, it is expected to follow the egg-scattering reproductive strategy universal among Enteromius and the broader Smiliogastrinae. In barbs of this type, a driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, and eggs and milt are released together in brief spawning rushes. No pair bond is formed, no territory is defended beyond the momentary chase, and males compete by persistently driving females rather than by establishing defended sites.
Colour and activity likely intensify in both sexes at spawning time, as is typical for small African barbs, though no specific observations for this species are recorded.
Breeding
Enteromius castrasibutum has not been recorded in the aquarium hobby and has not been captive-bred under documented conditions. Extrapolating from the reproductive biology of the genus, the species would be an egg-scatterer producing adhesive eggs scattered over fine-leaved plants, root masses, or substrate, with no parental care whatsoever — the adults give no attention to eggs or larvae, and cannibalism of the spawn is probable if adults remain present.
In a hypothetical aquarium breeding attempt the approach for other small Enteromius would apply: a shallow, well-planted or moss-furnished spawning tank with soft, warm water, conditioning on live foods, and prompt removal of the adults after spawning. Whether the species would adapt to captivity given its extreme rarity in collections is unknown.
In the aquarium
Enteromius castrasibutum is effectively unknown in the aquarium hobby and does not appear in the ornamental fish trade. Its collection has apparently been limited to the original type specimens from the late 1930s, and no subsequent captive-maintenance records exist in the literature reviewed here. Any import would require appropriate permits given the species' restricted known range in the Central African Republic.
Were it to become available, husbandry would follow the general template for small African Enteromius barbs: a spacious, well-filtered freshwater aquarium with subdued lighting, fine substrate, marginal planting, and warm, soft to moderately hard, near-neutral water. A shoal would be preferable to solitary keeping, as small barbs exhibit clearer natural behaviour and reduced stress in groups.
Conservation
Enteromius castrasibutum is listed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, assessed on 16 February 2009. The Data Deficient rating reflects the absence of enough information to make a direct or indirect assessment of the species' extinction risk — not a conclusion that it is secure. The species is known only from the type locality at Fort Sibut in the Ubangi system of the Central African Republic, and this single confirmed location implies a potentially restricted range that could make it vulnerable to local habitat degradation.
The Central African Republic's freshwater ecosystems face pressures including agricultural runoff, subsistence fishing, deforestation in riverine buffer zones, and infrastructure development, though the intensity of these pressures at the Fort Sibut locality specifically is not documented for this species. A targeted survey to confirm the species' current presence, broader distribution within the Ubangi drainage, and population condition would be the minimum step toward a more informed IUCN assessment. Until such data exist, the conservation status of E. castrasibutum remains unresolved.
