Enteromius caudosignatus was described by Max Poll in 1967 under the original combination Barbus caudosignatus, placing it in the broad genus Barbus that once encompassed the great majority of Old World barbs. The species has since been transferred to Enteromius, a genus that accommodates many of the small African barbs previously grouped in Barbus or Puntius. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) records the valid combination as Enteromius caudosignatus (Poll, 1967), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the genus change.
The genus Enteromius belongs to the subfamily Smiliogastrinae within the family Cyprinidae. It is a species-rich assemblage of small to medium African barbs distributed widely across sub-Saharan river systems. Enteromius caudosignatus is known from a single location within the Congo Basin drainage of Angola, and no subsequent records have expanded its documented range.
Morphology
The most diagnostic feature of Enteromius caudosignatus is the prominent oval black spot at the base of the caudal fin — the character directly encoded in its name. Beyond this mark, the species shares the typical body plan of a small Enteromius: a moderately deep, laterally compressed body, small scales, and the single pair of rostral barbels characteristic of many members of the genus.
Detailed meristic data from the original description are not widely reproduced in secondary literature, and size data remain sparse. The species is considered a small barb consistent with other members of the genus, but precise maximum length figures are not reliably established from available sources.
Habitat

The Congo Basin encompasses an enormous range of habitat types — from slow, tannin-stained forest streams with soft, acidic water to faster-flowing savanna rivers with harder, more neutral chemistry — and the specific conditions at the single known locality of E. caudosignatus have not been documented in detail in accessible literature.
The genus Enteromius generally inhabits clean, well-oxygenated freshwaters: streams, small rivers, and the margins of larger systems, often over sand, gravel, or rocky substrates with riparian vegetation. Feeding

There is no nest construction, no bubble-nest, and no mouthbrooding in any barb. The adhesive eggs settle among plants, roots, or substrate, and the adults disperse without further involvement in reproduction.

Captive breeding of Enteromius caudosignatus has not been documented in accessible hobbyist or scientific literature. Following the typical barb pattern, a spawning event would produce adhesive eggs scattered over fine-leaved vegetation or deposited among substrate materials with no parental care offered by either parent — adults of most barb species will consume eggs and larvae given the opportunity.
For hobbyists who might encounter this species, standard egg-scattering barb methods would apply: a separate spawning tank with soft to moderately hard water, fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, and removal of adults after spawning to protect the eggs.
