Enteromius chicapaensis is a small cyprinid barb native to the central Congo Basin, described from Angola by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1967. Like many of the small Enteromius barbs distributed across sub-Saharan Africa, it is an inconspicuous species that has attracted little research attention beyond its original description; its biology in the wild remains largely unstudied. The species is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, reflecting an absence of evidence for significant population decline in the broadly connected Congo Basin drainage system.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius chicapaensis was described by Max Poll in 1967 as Barbus chicapaensis, based on material collected from Angolan inland waters. Poll's 1967 contribution to Angolan ichthyology was a comprehensive checklist treating 264 species from the country's river systems, and B. chicapaensis was among the novel taxa introduced in that work. The original authority combination is therefore (Poll, 1967), with the parenthetical indicating a subsequent generic transfer.

The species is now placed in the genus Enteromius, a large and taxonomically heterogeneous grouping of African barbs within the family Cyprinidae (subfamily Smiliogastrinae). The genus Enteromius encompasses a substantial portion of the small-barb diversity across sub-Saharan Africa, and many species within it share the epithet history of having been described under Barbus — the old catch-all genus that once held most of the world's small cyprinids. Formal nomenclatural authority for the current placement rests with the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS).

Morphology

Detailed published measurements for Enteromius chicapaensis are sparse in the accessible literature. As a member of the genus Enteromius and the broader African small-barb radiation, it is expected to be a small, moderately fusiform cyprinid, with the typical two pairs of barbels, a single dorsal fin, and cycloid scales characteristic of the group.

Breeding

Enteromius chicapaensis reproduces as an egg-scatterer with no parental care. Adhesive eggs are released over plants, roots, gravel, or other substrate, after which the adults take no further role in their development. Many barbs will actively consume their own eggs given the opportunity.

For aquarists who might encounter it through specialist Congo Basin collections, the general care principles for small African Enteromius barbs would apply: a spacious, well-filtered tank with open swimming areas, neutral to slightly soft water reflecting the Congo Basin's varied chemistry, and a shoaling group of at least six individuals to express natural social behaviour. It should be fed a varied omnivore diet of small dry, live, and frozen foods.

Conservation

Enteromius chicapaensis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, reflecting that no evidence of significant population decline has been documented across its range in the central Congo Basin. The Congo Basin's vast extent and connectivity provide a degree of resilience that narrowly endemic species in smaller river systems lack.

Nonetheless, the Congo Basin faces growing pressures from deforestation, mining activity (particularly in Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo), agricultural expansion, and pollution of smaller tributaries. Many of the smaller Enteromius species of the region are poorly surveyed, and changes to their populations may go undetected. Continued monitoring of the Angolan and central Congo fish fauna remains important for assessing the true conservation status of species such as E. chicapaensis.
