Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius citrinus was described by the Belgian-born British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1920 under the original combination Barbus citrinus, based on material collected from the Ubangi and Uele rivers of the middle Congo basin. The species epithet citrinus is Latin for 'like a citron' — the lemon-like yellow fruit — and refers to the lemon-yellow colouration of the body and fins that distinguishes this small barb.
The genus Enteromius is assigned to the subfamily Smiliogastrinae, the large and diverse grouping of small Old World cyprinids that emerged from the decades-long revision of the paraphyletic Barbus sensu lato. African material previously united under Barbus (and sometimes Puntius in older literature) has been progressively redistributed across a suite of resurrected or newly erected genera; Enteromius accommodates a substantial portion of the smaller sub-Saharan species. The Catalog of Fishes records the current valid combination as Enteromius citrinus (Boulenger, 1920).
Morphology
Enteromius citrinus is a small cyprinid with a maximum recorded total length of 2 in, consistent with the diminutive body plan typical of many Enteromius species in the Congo basin. The common name and species epithet both point to the distinctive lemon-yellow pigmentation that characterises the body and fins, which presumably separates it from sympatric congeners at a glance.
Beyond size and overall colour, detailed morphological data for this species are sparse in the available literature. As a member of the subfamily Smiliogastrinae it shares the general cyprinid body plan — a compressed, moderately deep body, a terminal or slightly subterminal mouth without teeth on the jaws, pharyngeal teeth, and cycloid scales. Sexual dimorphism has not been formally characterised for this species; in analogous small Enteromius, females are typically deeper-bodied when gravid.
Habitat
The type localities of Enteromius citrinus are the Ubangi and Uele rivers, major northern tributaries of the Congo River in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with additional records from the Kasai drainage near Kananga in the same country. The species is therefore a Congo basin endemic, associated with the vast river network of central equatorial Africa.
FishBase characterises the species as benthopelagic — frequenting the lower water column and near-substrate zone in freshwater. Within the Enteromius genus, species generally occupy rivers, streams, reservoirs and ponds, with many preferring rheophilic (flowing-water) conditions: vegetated riffles, rocky pools, woody debris zones and areas of fine substrate such as sand. Chemistry data specific to this species are not available in the published literature; typical Congo basin headwater and mid-river habitats in the region span a broad range, but many support soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water in the tropical temperature band.
Feeding
FishBase records a trophic level of 3.0 ± 0.3 for Enteromius citrinus, indicating a broadly omnivorous diet of mixed plant and animal material — consistent with the feeding ecology of most small Enteromius in the region. At this trophic level the species likely forages on algal films, fine detritus, small invertebrates and organic particles picked from the substrate and from submerged surfaces.
No field gut-content studies appear in the accessible literature for this species. Diet reconstruction for closely related small African barbs suggests opportunistic, non-selective feeding on whatever organic material is most available seasonally — insect larvae, diatoms, fine plant fragments and benthic invertebrates being the most common dietary components in comparable riverine cyprinids.
Mating
Enteromius citrinus, like all barbs, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No reproductive observations specific to this species have been published, but the mating strategy is uniform across the genus and the broader cyprinid clade to which it belongs: a driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, and the pair release eggs and milt together in brief, repeated spawning rushes.
There is no pair bond, no nest construction, and no territorial defence beyond the transient chasing activity of courtship. Spawning in tropical African river barbs is often tied to seasonal cues — rising water levels, warming temperatures, or the onset of the rains — that stimulate gonadal development and trigger aggregation in suitable spawning habitat.
Breeding
No aquarium breeding accounts for Enteromius citrinus appear in the hobbyist or scientific literature, reflecting both its rarity in the trade and the general scarcity of published data on this Congo basin species. Based on the uniform reproductive mode of the genus, breeding would follow the standard barb pattern: adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs scattered over fine-leaved vegetation, roots or gravel, with no parental care whatsoever — adults will readily consume eggs if not separated from the spawn.
In captive breeding of analogous small African barbs, a dedicated shallow spawning tank with soft, slightly acidic water and fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop is used, and the adults are removed after spawning to protect the eggs. Eggs hatch within one to two days at tropical temperatures; free-swimming fry require infusoria or equivalent micro-food initially, graduating to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii as they grow.
In the aquarium
Enteromius citrinus does not appear in the mainstream aquarium trade and is not documented in hobbyist sources as an available or established aquarium fish. Its collection area in the Congo basin is remote and the species lacks a recognised common name, both indicators of very limited commercial collection. Any specimens that did reach aquaria would be treated as rare imports, best kept in species tanks or with other small, peaceful African cyprinids.
By analogy with similarly sized Enteromius from the Congo basin, husbandry would favour soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water at tropical temperatures in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius, with fine substrate, some planted cover, and good oxygenation from gentle current. The species' modest 2 in maximum size means a small footprint is sufficient for a group, which should be kept in shoals as befits a gregarious cyprinid.
Conservation
Enteromius citrinus is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, evaluated on 16 February 2009. The Data Deficient status reflects a genuine absence of information — there are insufficient distributional, population, and habitat data to determine whether the species faces significant conservation risk, not a confirmed finding of stability or decline.
The Congo basin harbours extraordinary freshwater biodiversity but remains one of the least-surveyed major river systems in the world; many of its small endemic cyprinids are known only from type specimens or a handful of collections. Pressures across the basin include artisanal and commercial fisheries, deforestation and associated sedimentation, and increasing extraction of water resources. Without dedicated surveys, the conservation situation for Enteromius citrinus specifically cannot be assessed, and a reassessment with modern survey data would be required to assign a meaningful Red List category.
