Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius diamouanganai was first described by Teugels and Mamonekene in 1992, originally placed in the genus Barbus as Barbus diamouanganai. The type locality is the upper Congo River system in the Kouilou Province of the Republic of Congo, encompassing the Louesse, Lekoumou, and Djoulou rivers. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) — the authority for valid names — now places it in Enteromius, the large African barb genus that absorbed much of the old Barbus complex for sub-Saharan species following a series of taxonomic revisions from the late 2000s onward.
The parenthetical form of the authority, (Teugels & Mamonekene, 1992), signals that the species was moved out of the genus in which it was originally described. FishBase lists it under FishBase ID 55213. No synonyms or subspecies are recognised. The species is seldom encountered in the aquarium trade and has attracted little research attention beyond the original description, meaning detailed notes on its biology in the wild remain sparse.
Morphology
FishBase records a maximum standard length of 4.5 in for this species, placing it among the mid-sized members of Enteromius. Like other African barbs, it has the generalised cyprinid body plan: a moderately deep, laterally compressed trunk, a single dorsal fin, no adipose fin, and the pair of maxillary barbels characteristic of the genus.
Detailed meristic data and colour descriptions from the original 1992 description are not widely reproduced in secondary sources, and specific notes on pigmentation, fin-ray counts, or lateral-line scale counts are sparse in accessible literature. As with most Enteromius, males are expected to be slimmer and smaller than gravid females, though no published account of sexual dimorphism in this species has been widely cited.
Habitat
Enteromius diamouanganai is known from the river systems of the Republic of Congo and Gabon, with confirmed records from the upper Congo River basin in Kouilou Province and adjacent river drainages in the Congo–Gabon borderlands. It inhabits tributary streams and flowing freshwater in the humid equatorial forest zone of west-central Africa — an environment typically characterised by shaded channels, soft substrates of sand and leaf litter, and water that is soft and mildly acidic to neutral.
Specific water-chemistry data for this species are sparse. By analogy with other Enteromius from comparable lowland forest-stream habitats in the Congo basin, temperatures are likely in the range of 72–79 °F and pH mildly acidic to neutral, though these figures reflect the broader environmental context rather than measurements taken at the type locality. The species is a benthopelagic fish of flowing water rather than a lacustrine or floodplain form.
Feeding
No published dietary study for Enteromius diamouanganai is available in accessible sources. Like the great majority of small Enteromius from Congo basin streams, it is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore, foraging on small invertebrates — insect larvae, worms, and microcrustaceans — along with algae, plant fragments, and organic detritus picked from the substrate and water column.
This feeding mode is consistent with the generalised gut morphology and ecological niche common to small African barbs in forest-stream environments, where a varied, seasonally shifting food base rewards dietary flexibility. Until a stomach-content study is published for this species, the omnivore characterisation should be regarded as an inference from the genus and habitat rather than a documented fact.
Mating
Enteromius diamouanganai, like all barbs, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No field or aquarium account of its specific courtship behaviour has been published, but the pattern across Enteromius is consistent: a driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, and the pair briefly press together to release eggs and milt simultaneously. There is no nest, no pair bond beyond the spawning act, and no territory held beyond the moment of courtship.
Spawning in forest-stream Enteromius is likely triggered by seasonal cues — rising water levels and shifting temperature or food availability — associated with the wet season in the equatorial Congo basin. Colour intensity in males may sharpen during this period as competition between rival males intensifies.
Breeding
No aquarium breeding account for Enteromius diamouanganai has been published; the species is rarely maintained in captivity outside research settings. Based on the biology of comparable Enteromius, spawning would follow the standard barb pattern: adhesive eggs are scattered over fine-leaved plants, roots, or gravel, and the adults — which will readily consume their own spawn — give no parental care whatsoever. Eggs would be expected to hatch within 24–48 hours at typical equatorial water temperatures, with larvae becoming free-swimming a few days later.
Any hobbyist keeping this species should assume the same practical approach used for other small African barbs: a separate shallow spawning tank, soft slightly acidic water, a mesh or spawning-mop layer to protect eggs from the adults, and removal of the parents immediately after spawning is observed.
In the aquarium
Enteromius diamouanganai is essentially unknown in the ornamental trade. It has no established common name and is not commercially bred or distributed, making it a species of interest primarily to specialist collectors with access to West-central African imports or research specimens. Its modest size of around 4.5 in SL would theoretically make it manageable in a spacious community aquarium for active mid-sized fish, but no captive husbandry record is available to guide practical care.
By inference from its habitat, soft to moderately soft, slightly acidic to neutral water in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius, good filtration for flow, subdued lighting, and a tank furnished with wood, leaf litter, and fine-leaved plants would replicate the shaded Congo-stream environment it occupies in the wild. As a shoaling cyprinid it would likely do best kept in a group rather than as a singleton.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Enteromius diamouanganai as Least Concern in 2022, noting no major documented threats to its populations. Its range spans the Republic of Congo and Gabon — countries where large areas of equatorial forest and the river systems they shelter remain relatively intact compared with more heavily settled regions of Africa.
The principal risks to small Enteromius across the Congo basin are habitat-based: forest clearance, artisanal mining in stream catchments, agricultural runoff, and the disruption of the hydrological regimes that sustain forest streams. For now, the species occupies a range where these pressures have not been documented at a scale sufficient to drive population decline, and its LC status reflects the absence of evidence of threat rather than a comprehensive monitoring programme. Data on population size, trends, and precise distribution limits remain sparse.
