Labeobarbus caudovittatus is a large African cyprinid of the Congo River basin and Lake Tanganyika drainage, originally described by George Albert Boulenger in 1902 under the name Barbus caudovittatus. A benthopelagic riverine fish capable of reaching 31.5 in in total length, it belongs to the diverse assemblage of central and western African yellowfish that collectively occupy a range of habitats from cool highland torrents to warmer lowland channels. Like its relatives, it is a subterminal-mouthed, two-barbelled grazer tied to large, permanent river systems, and its wide distribution across the middle and upper Congo, the Luapula, and the Ogowe and Nyanga basins of Gabon gives it a relatively secure conservation standing — the IUCN assesses it as Least Concern.

Taxonomy & naming

Labeobarbus caudovittatus was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1902 under the original combination Barbus caudovittatus. The parenthetical authority in the current name records that the species has since been moved out of the genus in which it was first placed. Under the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer et al., the authority for valid cyprinid names), the species is now placed in Labeobarbus — a genus that accommodates the large-bodied African barbs often called yellowfish or labeobarbs.

GBIF confirms the valid combination as Labeobarbus caudovittatus (Boulenger, 1902) and associates the species with occurrence records centred on the Congo River system and Lake Tanganyika. The specific epithet caudovittatus is a compound of the Latin cauda (tail) and vittatus (striped or banded), likely referencing a dark marking on or near the caudal region noted in the type description. The genus name Labeobarbus combines Labeo (from the Latin labium, lip — alluding to the well-developed lips characteristic of many members) and Barbus, the historical catch-all for Old World barbs.

Morphology

Labeobarbus caudovittatus is a large barb, with FishBase recording a maximum total length of 31.5 in. That makes it one of the more imposing members of the central African Labeobarbus fauna, though wild-caught adults of that size are relatively uncommon. The body form is elongate and moderately compressed, consistent with a fish adapted to flowing water.

The mouth is inferior — positioned on the underside of the head — with weakly to moderately developed lips, a configuration suited to browsing algae, biofilm and invertebrates from rocky or gravel substrates. Two pairs of barbels are present: the anterior pair is approximately half the length of the posterior pair, and the posterior pair reaches roughly the diameter of one eye. The dorsal fin carries 13–15 soft rays, and the anal fin 8–9 soft rays. Colouration in life includes the yellowish or silvery flanks typical of the group.

Habitat

The species occupies a broad range of riverine environments across central and western Africa. Its confirmed range spans the middle and upper Congo River from Pool Malebo to the Luapula River (Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola, Zambia), Lake Tanganyika and the Ruzizi River that feeds it, and the Ogowe and Nyanga river basins of Gabon.

Across this range, Labeobarbus spp. show ecological flexibility linked to physico-chemical gradients — research in the Luhoho basin of the eastern Congo River system found that electrical conductivity and water temperature are stronger predictors of habitat association than substrate alone, consistent with a genus that spans both cool highland rivers and warmer lowland channels. FishBase gives a temperature range of 75–81 °F and a pH range of 6.5–7.5 for L. caudovittatus, reflecting predominantly tropical lowland river conditions. The species is benthopelagic, living and feeding near the bottom in open river channels and their associated lakes.

Feeding

The inferior mouth and moderately developed lips of Labeobarbus caudovittatus indicate a benthic feeding habit, with the fish browsing biofilm, periphyton, algae and small invertebrates from rocky and gravel substrates in the manner typical of Labeobarbus. Large individuals in major river channels likely supplement this with larger invertebrates and occasionally organic detritus carried by the current.

In the Congo basin, the seasonal rhythm of river flooding and low water influences feeding opportunities significantly — large African barbs often feed most intensively in the wet season when aquatic productivity rises and food is dispersed across a broader floodplain. No specific dietary study for L. caudovittatus is available in the literature captured here, but its morphology aligns closely with the generalist benthic grazer strategy documented across the genus.

Mating

Labeobarbus caudovittatus, like all barbs, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest, no bubble-nest, and no mouthbrooding. Courtship involves one or more males pursuing a ripe female through the water column or over the substrate; when the pair or group presses together, eggs and milt are released simultaneously.

Large African river barbs are typically seasonal spawners, with reproduction tied to hydrological cues — rising water levels, increased flow and elevated temperatures associated with the wet season trigger spawning migrations into tributary streams or onto flooded margins. No pair bond forms, and no territory is maintained beyond the brief courtship interaction.

Breeding

Spawning is broadcast-style: adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs are scattered over gravel, cobble or submerged plant material and are abandoned immediately after fertilisation. Neither parent guards the eggs or fry, and adults may consume eggs opportunistically. At the scale typical of large African barbs, a single female may release thousands of eggs in a spawning event.

Labeobarbus caudovittatus is not established in the aquarium hobby and there are no captive breeding records in the available literature. Its size — up to 31.5 in — makes it impractical for all but the largest public aquarium systems. Management of this species and its relatives in the wild relies entirely on natural reproduction within intact river systems.

Interest in the species is primarily among researchers, conservation managers and large-facility curators.

Conservation

Labeobarbus caudovittatus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (assessed 2022). This reflects its wide distribution across the central Congo River system and associated waters — one of Africa's most extensive drainage networks — and the absence of evidence for major population decline across its range.

The Congo basin faces cumulative pressures including artisanal and commercial fisheries, agricultural runoff, and expanding infrastructure development, all of which affect large-bodied riverine fish disproportionately. Large Labeobarbus are targeted by fishers across their range as a food source, and the Luapula and Ogowe populations are subject to local fishing pressure. However, given its range extent, the species is not currently considered at elevated risk. Monitoring of population trends in the Ruzizi River — a highly fished connection between Lake Tanganyika and Lake Kivu — and in the Ogowe basin would help verify the continuing applicability of the LC assessment.
