Enteromius holotaenia, the spotscale barb, is a slender riverine cyprinid of central and west-central Africa, native to the Congo River basin, the Sanaga and Chiloango drainages of Cameroon and the Republic of the Congo, and the Chad basin. Described by George Albert Boulenger in 1904 from specimens collected in the Congo, it reaches about 4.5 in in standard length and inhabits clean, well-oxygenated rivers and streams where it forages for aquatic benthic insects. A schooling species with a preference for flowing water, it occasionally appears in the specialist aquarium trade under its older synonym Barbus holotaenia.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius holotaenia was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1904, originally placed in the broad genus Barbus — a catch-all for African and Eurasian barbs that has since been progressively dismantled. The species was long catalogued as Barbus holotaenia (Boulenger, 1904) in older literature and in much of the aquarium trade. The Catalogue of Life and current systematic practice place it in Enteromius, a genus erected to accommodate a large portion of the small African barbs previously lumped within Barbus.

The family Cyprinidae is the largest freshwater fish family in the world, and African cyprinids have seen extensive revisionary work in recent decades as molecular and morphological analyses have clarified genus-level boundaries. The parenthetical authority in the current combination — (Boulenger, 1904) — signals that the species was moved from its original genus. The Catalogue of Life records the valid name as Enteromius holotaenia (Boulenger, 1904) within the family Cyprinidae.

Morphology

The spotscale barb reaches a maximum of about 4.5 in in standard length, making it a medium-sized representative of the African Enteromius. The body is typical of the genus: moderately elongate and laterally compressed, with the shape suited for life in flowing water. The common name 'spotscale barb' refers to distinctive scale markings that give the flanks a spotted or reticulated appearance.

As with most barbs, the snout bears a small mouth adapted for picking invertebrates from substrate surfaces, and the fins are unelaborated. Sexual dimorphism, if present, has not been well characterised in the literature; females of many Enteromius become noticeably fuller in the body when gravid.

Habitat

Enteromius holotaenia is a riverine species associated with clean, well-oxygenated flowing water. Its range spans the Congo River basin from the lower Congo to the middle Luapula River, the Sanaga basin in Cameroon, the Chiloango basin in the Republic of the Congo, and portions of the Chad basin — a distribution covering a wide swath of central and west-central Africa. FishBase classifies it as benthopelagic, consistent with a lifestyle of foraging close to the substrate in river currents.

Water chemistry across this range is soft to moderately soft. FishBase records a pH of 6.0–6.5 and a hardness of up to 8 dH, reflecting the soft, slightly acidic to neutral conditions of Congo-basin forest rivers and savanna headwaters. Water temperature across the range is broadly tropical: 75–86 °F. Seriously Fish describes the species as inhabiting 'various biotopes but primarily riverine', emphasising its preference for current and clear water over stagnant conditions.

Feeding

Enteromius holotaenia is strictly insectivorous in the wild, feeding on aquatic benthic insects as its primary dietary item. FishBase records the diet as insectivorous with a focus on benthic insects, and Seriously Fish notes that the species also takes small crustaceans. In practice this means the fish forages along and just above the substrate, picking invertebrates from the riverbed — behaviour consistent with its benthopelagic classification.

In aquarium settings, the species requires live and frozen foods to thrive and does not do well on dried products alone. Suitable items include bloodworm, daphnia, small crustaceans and similar invertebrate-based foods. As with many obligate or near-obligate insectivores, the spotscale barb is less adaptable at the food bowl than generalist omnivores, and diet quality directly influences condition and longevity in captivity.

Mating

Enteromius holotaenia, as a member of the family Cyprinidae, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner with no pair bond and no parental involvement beyond the act of spawning. A driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or along the substrate, pressing close alongside her as eggs and milt are released simultaneously. The eggs are adhesive and settle among fine-leaved plants, roots, or substrate crevices.

No territory is held beyond the brief courtship sequence, and courtship activity may involve multiple males competing for access to a ripe female within the school. Colour and vigour are at their peak in breeding condition. The eggs, once scattered, receive no further attention from either parent.

Breeding

Like other African barbs, E. holotaenia scatters adhesive eggs over plants or substrate and provides no parental care. Adults may consume their own eggs if given the opportunity, so successful captive breeding typically requires separating parents from eggs after spawning. A conditioning period on live and frozen invertebrate foods helps bring females into breeding condition.

Specific breeding records for this species in the aquarium literature are sparse. General cyprinid practice applies: a separate spawning tank with soft, slightly acidic water and fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, with parents removed after egg scattering. Eggs are expected to hatch within one to two days at tropical temperatures, with larvae becoming free-swimming shortly thereafter.

In the aquarium

The spotscale barb reaches aquarium retailers occasionally, appearing in specialist trade as Barbus holotaenia. Seriously Fish recommends keeping the species in groups of eight to ten or more, reflecting its schooling nature and the behavioural benefits of conspecific company. It does best in a tank with steady, well-filtered flow replicating its riverine habitat — good oxygenation and current are more important for this species than for many community barbs.

Water chemistry should reflect its Congo-basin origins: soft to moderately hard water (up to 8 dH), pH in the range of 6.0–7.0, and temperatures of 75–86 °F. The species is an insectivore that requires live or frozen invertebrate foods as a dietary staple; dried-only feeding leads to poor condition. Tankmates should be robust, active species that share similar water preferences. The spotscale barb is not especially demanding in terms of décor but benefits from a spacious tank with open swimming lanes and some cover.

Conservation

Enteromius holotaenia is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, evaluated in May 2009. Its broad distribution across the Congo basin — one of the world's largest and most intact tropical river systems — together with the Sanaga, Chiloango and Chad basin occurrences, gives the species a wide range with no evidence of major range-wide population decline.

The Congo basin itself faces increasing pressures from artisanal mining, deforestation, and proposed large-scale hydropower developments, all of which can degrade water quality and alter river flow regimes in ways that affect insectivorous riverine species dependent on clear, well-oxygenated water. While E. holotaenia is not currently considered at risk, monitoring of riverine cyprinid communities in the basin is limited, and data gaps remain across much of its range.
