Enteromius hulstaerti is a small, stream-dwelling African barb described by Max Poll in 1945 from the Belgian Congo — the territory that is today the Democratic Republic of the Congo. A member of the vast and still-unsettled genus Enteromius, it is a Congo Basin endemic whose ecology and distribution remain poorly documented in the primary literature. Like the great majority of small African Enteromius, it is a modest, unassuming fish adapted to the clear to moderately turbid forest and savanna streams that drain the vast Congo watershed, living its life largely outside the view of aquarists and researchers alike.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius hulstaerti was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1945 from specimens collected in the Belgian Congo, corresponding to present-day Democratic Republic of the Congo. The original description placed it in Barbus, the historically broad catch-all genus that at its peak held hundreds of African and Eurasian species. The species remained under the combination Barbus hulstaerti throughout most of the twentieth century.

The major taxonomic reorganisation of African small barbs, following the framework established by Pethiyagoda, Meegaskumbura & Maduwage (2012) for cyprinid genera more broadly and subsequently applied to African taxa, transferred the small-bodied, scaleless- or thin-scaled African barb lineages into Enteromius Cope, 1861 — an older available name resurrected for this purpose. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) records the current valid combination as Enteromius hulstaerti (Poll, 1945), the parenthetical authority marking the move from the original genus. The species epithet honours an individual named Hulstaert; biographical details are not available in the current literature cache.

Morphology

Specific morphological data for Enteromius hulstaerti is sparse in the accessible literature. As a member of the small-bodied Enteromius group it is presumed to be a diminutive, streamlined barb with the typical cyprinid body plan: a moderately fusiform to slightly compressed profile, small terminal mouth, one pair of barbels or none (the presence of barbels varies across the genus), and cycloid scales. Enteromius hulstaerti has not been documented in the aquarium hobby and no breeding accounts are available in the accessible literature. Based on the biology of related small African barbs, eggs are expected to be adhesive and scattered over fine substrate or vegetation, hatching within one to two days at tropical temperatures, with larvae becoming free-swimming shortly thereafter.

Any hobbyist encountering this species — whether collected under a field permit or offered through specialist importers — would do well to apply the general husbandry framework for small Congo Basin Enteromius: a well-filtered, warm tank with soft to moderately hard water, subdued lighting, plenty of cover in the form of plants or leaf litter, and a diet of fine live and frozen invertebrate foods alongside quality micro-pellets. Specifics must await published field and captive observations.

Conservation

Enteromius hulstaerti has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; it is not evaluated (NE). Many small, range-restricted African Enteromius from the Congo Basin lack formal conservation assessments, partly because taxonomic uncertainty has made species delimitation difficult and partly because survey effort in the DRC's vast interior river network has been intermittent.

The Congo Basin faces escalating pressure from artisanal and industrial mining, deforestation driven by agriculture and charcoal production, and water extraction — all of which degrade stream habitats available to small riverine endemics. Without formal surveys establishing the range and population size of E. hulstaerti, it is impossible to gauge how these pressures affect it specifically. Baseline data collection remains a priority for the small-barb fauna of the Congo watershed.
