Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius jacksoni was described by the British ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1889, originally placed in the genus Barbus — at that time the default holding genus for virtually all Old World minnow-like fishes with barbels. The parenthetical authority in the valid name, (Günther, 1889), records that move. The species epithet jacksoni honours a collector or patron of the name "Jackson," following the Victorian convention of dedicating species to expedition sponsors, administrators, or contributors of material.
The genus Enteromius is now the accepted placement for a large and taxonomically complex assemblage of small African barbs, separated from the old Barbus sensu lato by molecular and morphological revision. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) lists the valid combination as Enteromius jacksoni (Günther, 1889). Older literature and collection databases may list this species as Barbus jacksoni, and care is needed when searching synonyms. The broader Enteromius assemblage encompasses hundreds of small to medium African barbs across sub-Saharan river systems, and many remain inadequately surveyed.
Morphology
Enteromius jacksoni is a small, slender barb reaching approximately 1.5–2 in in standard length. Like most small Enteromius, it has the characteristic cyprinid profile: a moderately compressed body, a subterminal mouth adapted for picking invertebrates from the substrate and water column, and a rounded snout. Coloration is typically silvery to pale olive on the flanks, with variable dusky spotting or a lateral stripe — the precise markings differ by population and preservation state, and fresh field descriptions for this species are sparse.
The fins are unspecialised. There is no striking coloration of the kind seen in popular aquarium barbs; this is a utilitarian stream fish rather than an ornamental one. Sexual dimorphism, where documented in related small Enteromius, typically amounts to females becoming deeper-bodied and more rounded when gravid, but detailed dimorphism data for E. jacksoni specifically are not recorded in the available literature.
Habitat
Enteromius jacksoni is a Congo Basin endemic, associated with the clear, shaded forest streams of the equatorial lowlands in central Africa. These streams are characteristically soft and acidic — pH values in the range of roughly 6.0–7.0 are typical for clear-water Congo forest streams, and temperatures in undisturbed forest reaches generally fall between about 22 and 79 °F, buffered by the closed canopy overhead.
The substrate in such habitats is typically sand, fine gravel, and accumulated leaf litter, with submerged root tangles and marginal vegetation providing cover. Current is gentle to moderate. The Congo Basin is the second-largest river system in the world by discharge, and its forest tributaries harbour an extraordinarily diverse endemic fish fauna; Enteromius jacksoni is one of many small barbs embedded in this matrix of streams. Specific locality data are sparse, and precise range boundaries within the basin have not been formally published.
Feeding
Like related small Enteromius, E. jacksoni is presumed to be a generalist omnivore of forest streams. Such species typically feed on small invertebrates — chironomid larvae, micro-crustaceans, worms, and insect pupae — alongside algal films, aufwuchs scraped from submerged surfaces, and organic detritus. The subterminal mouth position is consistent with picking food from the substrate surface and from leaf litter rather than surface-feeding.
No stomach-content studies specific to this species have been published. Extrapolation from its congeners and from the general ecology of small Congo Basin barbs suggests a diet opportunistically tracking seasonal invertebrate availability in the leaf litter and biofilm of shaded forest streams.
Mating
Enteromius jacksoni, in common with all barbs, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is constructed, no territory is held beyond a brief courtship pursuit, and no parental care is given at any stage. When condition and environmental cues are right — water temperature, photoperiod, and rainfall triggers in the wild — a male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, and the two press together briefly to release eggs and milt.
The eggs are adhesive and fall among plant stems, root tangles, or leaf litter on the stream bottom. Adults take no further interest in the spawn and will consume eggs given the opportunity. Specific courtship observations for this species have not been recorded in the published literature.
Breeding
No captive breeding account specific to Enteromius jacksoni appears in the accessible literature, and the species is not established in the aquarium trade. By analogy with other small, soft-water Enteromius, breeding would be expected to follow the standard barb pattern: adhesive eggs scattered over fine-leaved plants or substrate in soft, slightly acidic water, hatching in one to two days at tropical temperatures, with free-swimming larvae appearing a few days later.
Any attempt to breed this species in aquaria would logically follow the approach used for small West and Central African barbs — a separate, dimly lit spawning tank with soft acidic water, fine plants or a spawning mop, and removal of adults immediately after spawning to prevent egg predation. Its small size and presumed sensitivity to water quality place it firmly among the specialist rarities rather than beginner egg-layers.
In the aquarium
Enteromius jacksoni is not a fish encountered in the mainstream aquarium trade. It has not been captive-bred at commercial scale, and specimens reaching hobbyists would be rare wild-caught individuals. For the specialist interested in small African barbs or Congo Basin endemics, it would require conditions matching its native forest-stream habitat: soft, acidic water (pH 6.0–7.0), temperatures around 72–79 °F, subdued lighting, leaf litter, and fine substrate.
A calm, well-filtered aquarium without strong current, kept alongside other small, peaceful fishes of similar size and water requirements, would be the appropriate setting. Its modest size and retiring nature make it unsuitable for boisterous community tanks. Documentation of its behaviour and husbandry needs from any successful aquarium maintenance would be a genuine contribution to knowledge of this little-known species.
Conservation
Enteromius jacksoni has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; it carries no formal conservation status. This is common among the many small African Enteromius whose ranges are imperfectly surveyed and whose population sizes and trends are unknown. The Congo Basin itself remains relatively intact compared to many other African river systems — the basin's enormous size, low human population density in much of its interior, and limited industrial development have, to date, preserved large tracts of forest and their associated stream fauna.
Nevertheless, pressures on Congo Basin freshwater habitats are increasing: artisanal and industrial mining, logging, agricultural encroachment, and subsistence fishing all occur within the basin. For a narrowly endemic small barb, even localised habitat degradation can represent a significant threat. Without survey data establishing its range and abundance, the conservation needs of E. jacksoni cannot be precisely defined.
