Enteromius lamani is a small African barb known only from its type locality at Mukimbungu on the lower Congo River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Described by Lönnberg and Rendahl in 1920 — originally as Barbus lamani, later reassigned to the genus Enteromius — it is distinguished by a continuous black lateral band running from the snout to the caudal fin base. It has been collected just once, from a single site in one of the world's most biodiverse freshwater systems, and almost nothing is known of its biology, ecology, or current status.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius lamani was described by the Swedish zoologists Einar Lönnberg and Hjalmar Rendahl in 1920 under the original combination Barbus lamani. It is placed by FishBase in the order Cypriniformes, family Cyprinidae, subfamily Smiliogastrinae. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the authority for valid names, recognises the combination Enteromius lamani (Lönnberg & Rendahl, 1920), the parenthetical authority marking the transfer from Barbus.

The genus Enteromius — erected by Cope in 1867 — was for many decades submerged within the broad, polyphyletic genus Barbus, and many African small-barb species were carried under that name in older literature. Molecular and morphological work progressively split the African Barbus complex, with Enteromius now applied to a large radiation of small to medium-sized African cyprinids including many Congo Basin endemics. A WoRMS record confirms the transfer of E. lamani to Enteromius from the original Barbus designation.

The species epithet honours Karl Edvard Laman (1867–1944), a Swedish missionary and ethnographer who worked in the Congo region and collected natural history material there in the early twentieth century.

Morphology

FishBase records a maximum standard length of 4 in for Enteromius lamani, placing it among the medium-small members of the genus. The species is described as benthopelagic in habit and is characterised by a continuous black lateral band extending from the snout to the base of the caudal fin — a marking that distinguishes it within the lower Congo fauna.

Beyond the type description and FishBase summary, detailed morphological data for this species are sparse in the available scientific literature. The overall body plan is presumably that of a typical small Enteromius: a moderately fusiform, laterally compressed cyprinid with the standard complement of fins and the small inferior to subterminal mouth typical of insectivorous or omnivorous African barbs.

Habitat

The only confirmed locality for Enteromius lamani is Mukimbungu, situated on the lower Congo River in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The lower Congo is one of the most hydrologically dynamic and species-rich river systems on Earth, characterised by powerful currents, deep pools, rapids, and backwaters of varied water chemistry.

No environmental data specific to E. lamani have been published. General conditions in the lower Congo include warm tropical water temperatures, variable pH, and strong seasonal fluctuations in water level and flow. The benthopelagic description suggests the species occupies mid-water to bottom zones rather than the open surface, consistent with many small barbs that forage among substrate and marginal vegetation.

Feeding

No dietary studies have been conducted on Enteromius lamani, and it is known from a single collection. Based on its size, morphology, and the feeding ecology of closely related Enteromius species in the Congo Basin, it is reasonable to infer an opportunistic omnivorous diet: small invertebrates such as aquatic insect larvae, worms and crustaceans, supplemented with algae, plant fragments and organic detritus picked from the substrate.

Small African barbs of this body type typically feed actively throughout the day, grazing along the bottom and mid-water. Specific feeding data for this species are absent from the literature.

Mating

Enteromius lamani has not been observed spawning, and no courtship or reproductive data have been published. Like all members of the family Cyprinidae, it is expected to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. In the related Enteromius species for which observations exist, males pursue gravid females through vegetation or over the substrate, releasing eggs and milt together in brief presses.

No pair bond is formed, no nest is constructed, and no territory is maintained beyond the immediate moment of spawning. The eggs are adhesive and scatter among plants or substrate particles after release.

Breeding

No breeding data exist for Enteromius lamani in the wild or in captivity. As a cyprinid, the species almost certainly reproduces by egg-scattering with no parental care: adhesive eggs are scattered over fine-leaved plants, roots, or gravel substrate and left to develop without guarding by either parent.

The species has not been kept or bred in the aquarium hobby under its correct name, and clutch size, egg development time, and larval period are unknown.

In the aquarium

Enteromius lamani is not a species of the aquarium hobby and has not been imported or maintained under its correct name. It is known only from the type specimen collected at Mukimbungu and is unlikely to be available to aquarists.

Any aquarium care information presented here would be speculative. Hobbyists interested in small African barbs from the Congo Basin may encounter related Enteromius species of unknown identification in the trade, but E. lamani itself is best regarded as a scientific record rather than a potential aquarium subject.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assigns Enteromius lamani a status of Data Deficient (DD), reflecting that the species is known only from its type specimen collected at a single locality — Mukimbungu on the lower Congo River — and that no formal assessment of population trends or threats has been possible.

The lower Congo River basin faces ongoing pressures including hydroelectric development, water extraction, deforestation of riparian zones, and artisanal pollution. Whether E. lamani still exists, whether it has a wider range than the single type locality, and whether it faces any specific threat are questions that cannot be answered without further targeted surveys. The Data Deficient listing underscores how poorly sampled many small endemic fishes of the Congo system remain.
