Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius lujae was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1913 under the original combination Barbus lujae. The species epithet lujae refers to the Luce (Luja) River, a tributary in the Congo basin region from which early type material was collected. The species was long carried under the broad genus Barbus, which served as a taxonomic wastebasket for African and Asian small barbs throughout much of the twentieth century.
Modern molecular and morphological work has substantially revised African cyprinid classification. The valid genus for this species is now Enteromius, a resurrection of an older name applied to a large and diverse assemblage of sub-Saharan small barbs previously lumped under Barbus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the current valid combination as Enteromius lujae (Boulenger, 1913), with the parenthetical authority indicating the move from Boulenger's original genus placement.
Enteromius is a speciose African genus and the placement of lujae within it — and its relationships to sister species — has not been resolved at fine resolution. This species belongs to the broader radiation of small, lightly scaled African stream barbs found across the Congo and adjacent drainage systems.
Morphology
Enteromius lujae is a diminutive barb, with FishBase recording a maximum total length of 1.5 in for males or unsexed specimens. Like most small Enteromius, it is a slender, fusiform fish with the modest body depth and small scale count typical of stream-adapted African cyprinids.
Detailed morphological data for this species in the primary literature is sparse. The original description by Boulenger provides the formal characters, but published images and detailed accounts in the hobbyist or popular ichthyological literature are essentially absent. Habitat
Enteromius lujae inhabits small to medium river systems in central and southern Africa. Confirmed records place it in the Sankuru River, a major tributary of the Kasai River within the broader Congo basin in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and in Angolan drainage systems including the Kunene River and the Cubango River (part of the Okavango system). A record from the Cuanza River in Angola has been noted but requires confirmation.
Water chemistry data specific to this species is not available in the published record. The Congo basin and adjacent Angolan rivers span a range of habitat types, from soft, slightly acidic forest and savanna streams to harder, more neutral waters in the Kalahari-draining Okavango system. Temperature across tropical central Africa is broadly warm year-round, with seasonal variation in river height and flow on floodplain and savanna systems. In the absence of species-specific data, a reasonable expectation is warm tropical conditions (approximately 72–82 °F) with chemistry varying by drainage.
Feeding

Enteromius lujae is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby. It is a small, obscure African barb with no recorded captive population and no established trade presence. It would not be expected to appear in the hobby under this name, and any specimen would most likely be a scientific import or by-catch from a collecting trip targeting other species in the Congo or Angolan river systems.
For aquarists interested in small African Enteromius, other species from the genus are occasionally available through specialist importers, though none approaches the mainstream availability of the more familiar Asian barbs. Were E. lujae to become available, its small size (under 2 in) and inferred tolerance of warm, neutral to slightly acidic water would suggest a species suited to a species tank or a carefully chosen community with other small, non-aggressive fishes.
Conservation

The assessment reflects genuine uncertainty about the species' population status and range, rather than a determination that it is secure. Data Deficient is not a conservation status implying safety; it signals insufficient information to assign a threat category.
