Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius machadoi was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1967, originally under the name Barbus machadoi. The species epithet honours a collector or associate of Poll's, following the tradition of naming new species after their collectors or patrons. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the current valid combination as Enteromius machadoi (Poll, 1967), with the parenthetical authority marking the transfer out of Barbus.
The genus Enteromius was erected to accommodate a large group of small African barbs previously lumped in the catch-all genus Barbus. Molecular and morphological studies by Chakrabarty and Sparks (2007) and subsequent workers demonstrated that the old Barbus was polyphyletic; African small barbs were separated into Enteromius, while the true Barbus was restricted to European and Near Eastern barbel-like forms. Enteromius machadoi belongs to subfamily Smiliogastrinae within family Cyprinidae, the placement recorded by FishBase (ID 11397).
Detailed systematic study of this species within the Enteromius complex has not been published in accessible literature. Type locality and any additional taxonomic commentary await a comprehensive revision of Congo basin Enteromius.
