Enteromius mediosquamatus is a small African barb endemic to Angola, described by the Belgian ichthyologist Max Poll in 1967 under the name Barbus mediosquamatus and subsequently transferred to the genus Enteromius. Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius mediosquamatus was originally described by Max Poll in 1967 as Barbus mediosquamatus. The genus Barbus in its old, broadly circumscribed sense was a taxonomic wastebasket holding hundreds of Old World small barbs, and subsequent systematic work progressively disaggregated it. African small barbs formerly lumped in Barbus are now distributed across several genera, with Enteromius recognised for a large portion of the sub-Saharan assemblage; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the current valid combination as Enteromius mediosquamatus (Poll, 1967), with the parenthetical authority marking the transfer from the original genus.

The specific epithet mediosquamatus is Latin and refers to the scaling of the body, likely noting some feature of the scales at mid-body or along the lateral line that Poll considered diagnostic. Little revisionary work on this species has been published since its description, and its relationships within the highly species-rich genus Enteromius remain incompletely resolved.

Morphology
