Enteromius miolepis was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1902, originally placed in the genus Barbus — the broad receptacle then used for virtually all African and Eurasian small barbs. The species remained under Barbus miolepis for most of the twentieth century, before the large-scale reclassification of African cyprinids moved it into Enteromius, the genus that now encompasses a very large portion of the small, African barb fauna under the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer et al.).
The genus Enteromius is an assemblage of convenience as much as a natural group — it holds many hundreds of African species and is still under active phylogenetic scrutiny. The valid combination under the Catalog of Fishes is Enteromius miolepis (Boulenger, 1902), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the move out of Boulenger's original placement. GBIF and FishBase both confirm this as the current accepted name and authority.
Morphology
The zigzag barb is a moderately sized African barb, reaching approximately 5 in in standard length according to FishBase — relatively large for the genus, where many species remain under 3 in. Its body is fusiform and laterally compressed in the typical barb fashion, with the proportions of an active, mid-water schooling fish rather than a benthic specialist.
The common name 'zigzag barb' alludes to lateral markings — an irregular or broken lateral stripe or series of blotches that gives the impression of a zigzag pattern along the flanks. Coloration in life follows the silvery-gold background typical of many African Enteromius, with dark patterning more visible in fresh or well-lit specimens. Detailed meristic and morphometric data from the original description are not widely reproduced in the secondary literature accessible for this article; data are sparse beyond the length record and general body form.
Habitat
Enteromius miolepis occupies a broad range of tropical freshwater habitats across central and southern Africa. FishBase records the species from the Congo River basin (excluding the Luapula River and Lake Moers), the Okavango River, the upper Zambezi and Kafue river systems, the Cuanza and Bengo basins of Angola, and the Koki River — a tributary of Lake Tanganyika. Its presence in the Lake Chad basin has been noted but not confirmed.
Across this range the fish encounters a variety of conditions, from the warm, relatively soft waters of Congo forest streams to the more open, seasonally variable savanna rivers of the Okavango and Zambezi systems. FishBase records a temperature range of 75–82 °F for the species and describes its ecology as benthopelagic — foraging near the bottom while spending time in the water column. It is a tropical freshwater species with no known marine or brackish occurrence.
Feeding
Like most Enteromius species, E. miolepis is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore in the wild. African small barbs of this genus typically forage on a broad diet including small invertebrates, algal films, plant material and detritus found near the substrate and in the water column. Specific gut-content studies for this species have not been reported in the accessible literature, so dietary details are inferred from the feeding guild typical of similar-sized African stream barbs.
In aquaria, specimens should accept standard prepared foods — flakes and small pellets — as readily as live and frozen invertebrates such as bloodworm and daphnia. Supplementing with vegetable matter reflects the omnivorous tendencies of the group.
Mating
Enteromius miolepis, as a barb, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is built and no territory is held beyond the brief, opportunistic pursuit of a gravid female by a ready male. Courtship takes the form typical of the group: a driving male presses close to the female and the pair release eggs and milt together over a suitable substrate — fine-leaved plants, roots, gravel or leaf litter — in a quick, repeated sequence.
There is no pair bond, no parental involvement after spawning, and adults readily eat their own eggs if they encounter them. Larger river barbs of the genus may undertake seasonal lateral migrations in response to flooding, broadcasting eggs over inundated vegetation, but specific spawning-migration behaviour has not been documented for this species.
Breeding
Spawning in Enteromius miolepis follows the typical barb pattern: eggs are scattered adhesively over plants or substrate, hatch without parental care, and the larvae pass through a yolk-sac stage before becoming free-swimming. The eggs and early larvae are unprotected, and the adults should be removed from any spawning setup before the eggs are eaten.
No aquarium breeding accounts specific to this species are widely available in the hobbyist literature. By analogy with similar-sized Congo-basin barbs, a soft, warm water setup with fine-leaved plants or spawning mops, a shallow depth, and well-conditioned adults would be the reasonable starting point. Fecundity and incubation data have not been reported for this species; data are sparse.
In the aquarium
Enteromius miolepis appears in the aquarium trade as part of the broader Congo-basin barb fauna, though it is not among the most commonly available African barbs. FishBase confirms both commercial fisheries and aquarium trade uses, suggesting it reaches the hobby with some regularity. Its size — approaching 5 in — means it requires more space than the diminutive barbs that dominate the trade; a tank of at least 25 US gal is appropriate for a small group.
It should be kept as a group of six or more, reflecting its sociable, shoaling nature. Water conditions in the 75–82 °F range with a broadly neutral pH and moderate hardness match the conditions across most of its natural range. Robust, similarly sized tankmates are suitable; very small or slow fish should be avoided given its active disposition and adult size. Diet in captivity is undemanding — standard omnivore fare covers its needs.
Conservation
Enteromius miolepis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment made in May 2009. FishBase notes the species has a high resilience rating, with an estimated minimum population doubling time of fewer than 15 months — a life-history profile that buffers it against moderate levels of harvest pressure. Its broad distribution across multiple major African river systems further reduces its vulnerability to localised threats.
Across its range — the Congo basin, Okavango, upper Zambezi, Kafue and Angolan coastal drainages — the principal pressures on freshwater fish fauna are habitat degradation through deforestation and agricultural runoff, overfishing in subsistence and commercial contexts, and the effects of large-scale water infrastructure. None of these pressures has been documented as driving a significant decline in this species specifically, and its widespread distribution and high resilience support its current Least Concern standing.
