Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius neefi was described by the British–Ugandan ichthyologist P. Humphry Greenwood in 1962 from material collected in the Kabompo River, part of the Upper Zambezi drainage in what is now Zambia. The original combination was Barbus neefi, placing it in the large wastebasket genus Barbus that historically accommodated most African and Eurasian barbs. GBIF and FishBase confirm the current valid combination as Enteromius neefi (Greenwood, 1962), following the re-circumscription of African small-barb genera that moved many species from Barbus into Enteromius.
Enteromius is a large, geographically sprawling African genus encompassing hundreds of small to medium barb species across sub-Saharan Africa and parts of North Africa. The parenthetical authority signals that the species has been moved from its original genus. The specific epithet neefi is a proper name honouring an individual; detailed eponymic information for this 1962 name is not present in available sources.
Morphology
Enteromius neefi is a small, slender barb reaching approximately 3 in standard length — the maximum recorded in the FishBase database for males of this species. The body plan is typical of the genus: fusiform, moderately compressed laterally, with a small terminal mouth, a single pair of barbels or none, and a forked caudal fin.
The common name "sidespot barb" implies a lateral spot or marking pattern, consistent with the many Enteromius species characterised by one or more dark spots along the flank. Habitat
The sidespot barb is recorded from tributaries of the Steelpoort–Limpopo system in southern Africa, and from the upper Zambezi, Kafue, and upper Congo headwaters in Zambia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its natural range spans roughly 11°S to 25°S, covering a broad swathe of south-central African interior drainages.
The species is described as benthopelagic and tropical. It inhabits small water bodies and headwater streams, and the genus Enteromius as a whole is regarded as sensitive to habitat quality, favouring clean, well-oxygenated water with slow to moderate flow. Feeding

Enteromius neefi is an egg-scatterer that provides no parental care; adults will consume eggs given the opportunity. In the wild, spawning is presumably seasonal, tied to the rains and the warming and rising of river levels across the Zambezi and Kafue drainages. Egg numbers are unknown from the primary literature for this species specifically.
No aquarium breeding accounts specific to E. neefi have been documented in the accessible literature, but the approach used for similar small African Enteromius applies by analogy: a separate shallow breeding tank with fine-leaved plants or a mesh bottom layer, soft to moderately hard water at around 75–79 °F, and removal of the adults after spawning to protect the eggs. Fry, once free-swimming, would accept infusoria and then newly hatched brine shrimp.
In the aquarium
Enteromius neefi appears in the aquarium trade, though it is not among the commonly cultivated or widely available African barbs. Its modest size — around 3 in SL — makes it suitable for medium-sized aquaria. As with other small Enteromius, it would be expected to do best in a shoal of six or more individuals, kept alongside similarly sized and active companions.
The species' sensitivity to habitat quality in the wild suggests it would benefit from well-filtered, clean, oxygenated aquarium water. Specific captive husbandry data are sparse; by analogy with comparable southern African barbs, a temperature in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius and a broadly neutral pH would represent a reasonable starting point. It accepts the standard omnivore diet of quality flake food supplemented with live and frozen invertebrates.

The species has a reasonably broad distribution across the upper Zambezi, Kafue, and adjacent upper Congo headwater systems, and no evidence of range-wide population collapse has been documented.
However, the genus Enteromius as a whole includes many species sensitive to water quality, and southern African river systems face ongoing pressures from agriculture-driven sedimentation and water extraction, human settlement along river margins, and periodic drought stress in the interior plateau drainages that form this species' range. A prior reassessment by Roux and Hoffman (2017) reportedly suggested Near Threatened status for E. neefi, indicating some concern about local pressures; the current IUCN listing reflects the broadest view of the species' range.
