Taxonomy & naming
Mastacembelus vanderwaali was described by the South African ichthyologist Paul H. Skelton in 1976. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS — the authority for valid names) records the species in the genus Mastacembelus, the type genus of the family Mastacembelidae, within the order Synbranchiformes. The placement is the key fact about the fish: despite the vernacular name and sinuous shape, it is not a true eel. The true eels belong to the order Anguilliformes, a quite different lineage; the spiny eels of Mastacembelidae are more closely related to the swamp eels (Synbranchidae), and their elongate bodies are a convergent adaptation for the burrowing way of life rather than evidence of shared ancestry with marine eels.
The species was formerly placed in the genus Aethiomastacembelus, an African genus that housed many of the continent's spiny eels for much of the twentieth century. A subsequent evaluation of spiny-eel taxonomy synonymised Aethiomastacembelus with Mastacembelus, so the name Aethiomastacembelus vanderwaali is treated as a junior synonym and the current valid combination is Mastacembelus vanderwaali Skelton, 1976. The Catalog of Fishes confirms this treatment. The species epithet honours a collector or associate of Skelton; the precise person commemorated is not recorded in the available sources.
Morphology
Mastacembelus vanderwaali is a small spiny eel, with FishBase recording a maximum total length of approximately 6 in — making it considerably smaller than popular aquarium relatives such as the fire eel or tire-track eel. The body is greatly elongate and laterally compressed toward the tail, and is effectively scaleless to the touch; like other mastacembelids it is covered in tiny embedded scales and a thick coat of mucus rather than the obvious scales of a typical bony fish. Along the dorsal surface runs a row of short, isolated spines ahead of the soft dorsal fin — the character that gives the family its common name — and the soft dorsal, caudal and anal fins are continuous around the tail tip.
The snout is drawn out into a short fleshy proboscis tipped with tubular nostrils, used to probe the substrate for invertebrate prey. The common name 'ocellated' spiny eel refers to a pattern of rounded, eye-like spots or ocelli along the flanks. The species has 82 vertebrae according to FishBase data. Sexes are externally similar; ripe females may be fuller-bodied, but there is no reliable external sexual dimorphism reported in the literature.
Habitat
The species is native to the upper Zambezi River system, including the Upper Caprivi region of eastern Africa (now the Zambezi Region of northeastern Namibia). It is associated with fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water over rocky and sandy-pebbly substrates, including rapids and swift-water sections of the river, where FishBase notes it inhabits areas with dense vegetation and substrates that offer cover for a burrowing, cryptic animal.
In keeping with many southern African river fishes, Mastacembelus vanderwaali also uses the floodplain seasonally: FishBase records migration onto floodplain areas during the dry season, suggesting that the species exploits both the rapid-water rocky habitats of the main river channel and the calmer, vegetated margins during seasonal changes in water level. The Batoka Gorge on the Zambezi, where breeding has been documented, is a canyon section of dramatic fast water downstream of Victoria Falls. The species is not a rift-lake fish and does not live in the hard, alkaline conditions of lakes Tanganyika or Malawi; it occupies the warm, flowing fresh waters of the southern African savannah drainage.
Feeding
Mastacembelus vanderwaali is a nocturnal carnivore. FishBase records a diet of insect larvae, worms and other aquatic animals, consistent with the broader feeding strategy of the Mastacembelidae. Like its relatives, it uses its probing, sensitive snout to root through substrate, leaf litter and rock crevices for benthic invertebrates after dark, and its down-turned mouth is well suited to picking food from the riverbed rather than pursuing prey in open water.
In the aquarium the species should be offered live and frozen meaty foods — bloodworm, blackworm, earthworm, brine shrimp — in the evening, after the lights have dimmed. Aquarium care accounts note that newly imported fish often refuse food for a period of two weeks or more during initial acclimation, and that these animals are naturally shy, so feeding after lights-out encourages confident foraging. With patience many individuals become regular surface-feeders in their owner's presence.
Mating
Scientific study of the breeding biology of Mastacembelus vanderwaali is limited but documented. Research conducted at Batoka Gorge on the Zambezi River established that the species breeds seasonally: spawning begins in spring (August–September), during the period of low water that precedes the November rains. Pairs breed along rocky shorelines in sheltered areas of the gorge, with the timing linked to water level and season rather than temperature alone.
This spiny eel is not a true eel and does not undertake any marine migration: it breeds entirely in fresh water. Mating involves pairing along the rocky shoreline, and the species is an egg-scatterer giving no parental care. There is no nest construction, no territorial guarding of eggs, and no bubble nest of the kind built by some swamp eels — the adults scatter adhesive eggs and take no further part in their development.
Breeding
Mastacembelus vanderwaali is a substrate egg-scatterer. Documented breeding from Batoka Gorge confirms that pairs scatter adhesive eggs in sheltered rocky areas during the low-water spring period, and that no parental care follows spawning. The eggs are presumably adhesive enough to stick to rock surfaces or vegetation roots in current, and the larvae develop without adult attendance.
The species is rarely bred in the home aquarium: it is not commonly kept, its natural breeding trigger appears to be a seasonal low-water period before the onset of rains, and the requirements of a well-oxygenated, fast-flow set-up to condition adults are demanding. As with other mastacembelids, replicating the temperature and water-level fluctuations that cue spawning is the main challenge. There are no widely published accounts of successful captive rearing, and most fish in the trade, where available, will be wild-caught.
In the aquarium
Mastacembelus vanderwaali is rarely encountered in the aquarium trade, and its care requirements differ somewhat from the popular Asian spiny eels in that it comes from fast, well-oxygenated water rather than sluggish lowland rivers. A tank for this species should provide moderate to strong water movement, good oxygenation, a soft sandy substrate for burrowing, and plenty of caves, rockwork and shaded retreats in which the fish can conceal itself during the day. Like all mastacembelids it is scaleless and highly sensitive to copper-based medications and to deteriorating water quality; a mature, stable filtration system is essential.
It is a nocturnal species that spends daylight hours buried in substrate or wedged into crevices, emerging after dark to forage. Aquarium accounts note that newly acquired fish may refuse food for up to two weeks; feeding after lights-out with live or frozen invertebrates helps them settle. The species can be aggressive toward conspecifics, so it is best kept singly or with similarly sized, robust tankmates that will not harass or outcompete it at feeding time. A tight-fitting, fully sealed lid is non-negotiable, as spiny eels are accomplished escape artists that will climb through the smallest gaps and perish on the floor. Lifespan in captivity has been reported at 8–18 years for this and closely related small mastacembelids, making it a long-term commitment for an experienced aquarist.
Conservation
Mastacembelus vanderwaali is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. The species is present in the Zambezi River system and its associated habitats, and at the time of assessment there was no evidence of a range-wide decline sufficient to trigger a threatened category.
The upper Zambezi nonetheless faces ongoing pressure from a range of human activities: water abstraction for agriculture and growing riverside populations, sedimentation from land clearance in the catchment, and the long-term impacts of hydroelectric infrastructure. The Batoka Gorge, where the species has been studied and where breeding has been documented, is itself a proposed site for a large dam project that, if built, would flood significant sections of gorge habitat. The Caprivi-region populations also lie in a politically sensitive and historically impacted landscape. The species' preference for fast, rocky, well-oxygenated water means it is less resilient to habitat degradation than some of its relatives that tolerate slower and murkier conditions.
