Enteromius nigrifilis was described by John T. Nichols in 1928 as Barbus nigrifilis. The parenthetical authority in the current combination — (Nichols, 1928) — marks the species' move out of its original genus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the governing authority for valid names, places the species in Enteromius, a resurrected genus that absorbed the great majority of the African smallbarb species formerly lumped in Barbus or Puntius.
Enteromius is an enormous and taxonomically complex group spanning nearly all of sub-Saharan Africa, and many of its component species remain poorly studied. E. nigrifilis is one such data-sparse species: beyond its original description and the basic taxonomic record (FishBase ID 11431), no detailed morphological revision or molecular study has been published that specifically addresses this species in modern literature accessible to this review.
