Enteromius nigroluteus was described by Jacques Pellegrin in 1930, originally placed in the large catch-all genus Barbus, as was the practice for virtually all cyprinid barbs of that era. The type locality is in French Equatorial Africa (present-day Central African Republic, Republic of the Congo, or Cameroon — the precise locality is not documented in the accessible literature), and the type specimen is held at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle (MNHN) in Paris.
The genus Enteromius was revived and redefined by Paugy and colleagues (2003) to hold a substantial group of small-to-medium African barbs previously lumped in Barbus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the current valid combination as Enteromius nigroluteus (Pellegrin, 1930), with Barbus nigroluteus Pellegrin, 1930 as a junior synonym. The parenthetical authority signals that the species has been transferred out of Pellegrin's original genus assignment.
The species epithet nigroluteus combines the Latin niger (black) with luteus (yellow or golden), describing a colour pattern — dark markings against a lighter, possibly yellowish or pale body — that characterises the fish in the original description. Coverage of this species in modern ichthyological or aquarium literature is extremely sparse.

Water temperatures in these habitats range from roughly 72–79 °F, with slightly acidic to neutral pH values consistent with the forest and savanna catchments of the Congo and Cameroon river systems. Feeding
Enteromius nigroluteus has not been studied for diet in the wild. By analogy with closely related small Enteromius of Central and West Africa, it is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore, foraging in the water column and at the substrate for small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and worms — along with algae, diatoms, and organic detritus. Enteromius nigroluteus does not appear in the mainstream aquarium hobby and is absent from the standard hobbyist reference literature in English. It is not known to be available in the trade. For the small number of specialist collectors interested in West and Central African cyprinids, it would require sourcing directly from the type region or through ichthyological contacts with access to museum or field material.
If kept, the species would presumably be maintained like other small Enteromius: a modest aquarium of 15–20 US gal with gentle filtration, soft to moderately hard warm water around 72–79 °F, neutral to slightly acidic pH, fine sandy substrate, and some marginal plant cover or leaf litter. As a presumed schooling species it would benefit from being kept in a group of six or more individuals.
Conservation
Enteromius nigroluteus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List; its conservation status is Not Evaluated (NE). The species is data sparse in the scientific literature, and its current population status, precise native range, and any specific threats are not documented in accessible sources.
Many small Enteromius of West and Central Africa face pressure from habitat degradation — deforestation, artisanal mining, and siltation of headwater streams — as well as from dam construction and water extraction in the Congo and Cameroon basin systems. Whether E. nigroluteus is narrowly endemic to a single river system or more broadly distributed across the region is unknown.
