Enteromius nounensis is a small, benthopelagic cyprinid endemic to Cameroon, known from the Sanaga and Wouri river basins of the country's coastal and central highlands. Described in 1998 by Van den Bergh and Teugels, it is a diminutive barb reaching barely 2 in in total length, characterised by a subterminal mouth, the absence of barbels, and an incomplete lateral line carrying only four to six perforated scales. Like all members of the African small-barb radiation now grouped under Enteromius, it is an egg-scattering spawner with no parental care, and it remains poorly known in the aquarium hobby — a fish more familiar to ichthyologists cataloguing Cameroon's freshwater fauna than to fishkeepers.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius nounensis was described by Van den Bergh and Teugels in 1998, the species epithet referencing the Noun River, a major tributary of the Wouri basin in Cameroon and one of the collection localities for the type series. The original description placed the fish in the old, broadly conceived genus Barbus, which long served as a wastebasket for African and Eurasian small barbs; modern revisions have progressively dismantled that arrangement.

The genus Enteromius was resurrected and re-delimited by Copley (1941) and has since been applied consistently to the African small barbs — a large, morphologically conservative radiation of soft-rayed cyprinids distributed across sub-Saharan Africa. Detailed taxonomic work on the relationships of the African small barbs, including work summarised in studies of Cypriniformes systematics, treats Enteromius as the appropriate genus for this group. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid combination Enteromius nounensis (Van den Bergh & Teugels, 1998), with the parenthetical authority marking the transfer out of the authors' original genus placement.

No subspecies are recognised, and no aquarium trade names are in circulation for this species.

Morphology

Enteromius nounensis is a small barb, with a recorded maximum total length of 2 in. The body form is the typical compressed, moderately deep shape of a small rheophilic or benthic-associated African barb. The mouth is subterminal — positioned slightly below the snout tip, consistent with bottom-oriented or near-substrate feeding — and the species lacks barbels entirely, a character state useful in distinguishing it from related Enteromius species that carry one or two pairs.

The lateral line is incomplete, with only four to six perforated scales out of a total lateral-series count of approximately 21 to 25 scales, a ratio indicating that sensory coverage of the flank is reduced compared to fully laterally-lined cyprinids. The vertebral count is 32 to 33. The dorsal fin carries a single spine and approximately ten soft rays; the anal fin has eight soft rays. These meristic characters, captured from FishBase data derived from the original description, place the species within the soft-rayed, spineless-pectoral small-barb grade typical of Enteromius.

Detailed colour description in preserved or live material is not available in the primary sources consulted here; the coloration of small African Enteromius in life is often a pale to silvery ground with faint lateral spotting or banding, but no specific pattern data are recorded for nounensis.

Habitat

Enteromius nounensis is recorded from freshwater systems in Cameroon's Sanaga River basin and Wouri basin, both draining the central-western part of the country toward the Bight of Biafra. The Sanaga is Cameroon's largest river, originating in the Adamawa Plateau and descending through forest and savanna zones before reaching the coast; the Wouri is a shorter coastal system whose tributaries, including the Noun, drain the western highlands around Bafoussam and the Bamileke Plateau.

FishBase records the species as benthopelagic — spending time both near the substrate and in the lower water column — in freshwater only. Water parameters from FishBase indicate a soft, mildly acidic environment: pH 6.0 to 6.5, temperature 70–75 °F (70–75 °F). This chemistry is consistent with the forested upland and mid-elevation stream environments of western Cameroon, where underlying geology and canopy cover tend to produce relatively soft, slightly acidic water. No detailed habitat description at the level of substrate type, flow velocity, or vegetation is available in the sources consulted.

Feeding

No specific dietary study of Enteromius nounensis has been published in the sources available. Mating

Like all Enteromius and the broader barb lineage, Enteromius nounensis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is constructed, no parental territory is maintained, and no mouthbrooding or egg-guarding behaviour is known in this or any closely related species. Courtship in small Enteromius typically involves an active male pursuing a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, culminating in a brief lateral press during which eggs and milt are released simultaneously.

The eggs are adhesive and drift or fall among plant stems, roots, or the substrate surface after release. Adults do not attend them further, and in group situations dominant males may compete for access to receptive females. Spawning in African stream barbs is often associated with seasonal water-level change or temperature fluctuation, though the specific triggers for E. nounensis in its Cameroonian highland habitat are undocumented.

Breeding

Enteromius nounensis is not established in the aquarium hobby and has not been bred in captivity to any documented extent. Based on the uniform egg-scattering reproductive mode of Enteromius, breeding methodology — were it to become available — would follow the standard approach for small African barbs: a separate shallow spawning vessel with fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, soft slightly acidic water in the species' documented parameter range (pH 6.0–6.5, 70–75 °F), and removal of adults after spawning to prevent egg predation.

Fecundity, incubation period, larval development, and any seasonality in the wild breeding cycle are undocumented. The species' small adult size (max 2 in TL) suggests modest clutch sizes relative to larger Enteromius, but no counts are on record. Data sparse.

In the aquarium

Enteromius nounensis is not available in the ornamental fish trade and has no established hobby profile. It is known to science from museum specimens and field surveys in Cameroon; no importation or captive maintenance records have been traced in the sources consulted.

Should specimens become available, the species' small size, soft acidic water requirements, and benthic feeding mode suggest it would suit a quiet, densely planted species tank or a carefully assembled west-African biotope aquarium with other small, peaceable species from the Cameroonian forest-stream fauna. Water in the range of pH 6.0–6.5 and 70–75 °F (70–75 °F), low flow, and fine-grained foods appropriate to its subterminal mouth would be the logical starting point.

Conservation

Enteromius nounensis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (2020 assessment). The evaluation recognises the species as endemic to Cameroon but does not identify evidence of rapid population decline sufficient to qualify for a threatened category under current data.

As a single-country endemic restricted to two river basins in western Cameroon — the Sanaga and Wouri systems — the species occupies a geographic range that, while not trivially small, is entirely contained within a region experiencing ongoing pressure from agriculture, deforestation, and infrastructure development. The western highlands of Cameroon, including the Bamileke Plateau drained by the Noun tributary of the Wouri, support dense human settlement and intensive smallholder farming that affects stream water quality and riparian cover. Whether these pressures have measurably reduced E. nounensis populations is not documented. Continued survey work on Cameroon's endemic freshwater fauna would be needed to detect any emerging trend.
