Taxonomy & naming
Aphyosemion exiguum was described by the Belgian-born zoologist George Albert Boulenger in 1911, and the authority is placed in parentheses because the species has since been moved from its original genus placement. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Aphyosemion exiguum (Boulenger, 1911), placing it within the large West and Central African genus Aphyosemion of the family Nothobranchiidae.
The genus Aphyosemion is one of the most species-rich killifish genera in Africa, encompassing dozens of forest-stream and savanna killifishes with varied colouration and body patterns. Aphyosemion exiguum falls outside the annual-killifish clade — it inhabits permanent waters and does not produce diapausing eggs buried in substrate, distinguishing it from the Fundulopanchax and Nothobranchius groups with which hobbyists often compare it.
A closely related species, Aphyosemion exigoideum, shares a similar distribution in Cameroon and Gabon and a matching IUCN assessment history; the two are frequently confused in hobbyist literature, and collection-locality data is essential for correctly identifying wild-caught material. The name exiguum is Latin for 'small' or 'scanty', an apt description of this diminutive killifish.
Morphology
Aphyosemion exiguum is a slender, small-bodied killifish reaching a maximum of 1.5 in total length (FishBase). The body profile is elongate and laterally compressed, typical of the genus, with the dorsal fin set well back along the body. Sexual dichromatism is pronounced, as in most Aphyosemion species.
Males display an olive-green base colouration overlaid with deep red horizontal markings running from the operculum toward the caudal fin, with darker red spots distributed below the lateral line. The fins carry additional red patterning and the caudal fin is often elaborated with extensions or colour banding. Females are considerably plainer — brown to olive with minimal markings — and lack the fin ornamentation of males. The difference between the sexes is so marked that males and females can appear to be different species to the untrained eye.
The maximum size of 1.5 in makes this one of the smaller members of a genus that already trends toward small body size. Even mature males rarely exceed 1.5 in in aquarium conditions.
Habitat
Aphyosemion exiguum is a species of the Central African lowland rainforest belt. Its confirmed range includes multiple river systems in Cameroon — the Sanaga, Nyong, Lobo, upper Ivindo, Dja, Boumbé, and Boumba rivers — as well as records from Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and the Republic of Congo; occurrences in the Central African Republic are also reported (FishBase). Wild-caught material has been collected as recently as 2022 in the Djoum area of southern Cameroon, confirming the species remains present in at least parts of its historical range.
Within these drainage systems, the species occupies swamps and the swampy margins of brooks and streams running beneath forest canopy. These are permanent water bodies — not seasonal or ephemeral pools — with characteristically soft, gently acidic water stained amber by tannins leached from decaying forest leaf litter. FishBase records a pH range of 6–7 and hardness of 5–12 dH, with water temperatures of 70–75 °F. The forest canopy provides deep shade, keeping light levels subdued year-round.
These soft, tannin-rich forest microhabitats are shared by numerous other small, specialty fish — dwarf cichlids, Phenacogrammus tetras, and other killifish species — but Aphyosemion exiguum occupies the mid-water and lower water column among leaf litter and submerged vegetation, rarely venturing into faster or more open current.
Feeding
Like most members of the genus, Aphyosemion exiguum is a micro-predator in the wild, feeding on small insects and invertebrates encountered at and just below the water surface or among the leaf litter of the forest floor. At 1.5 in maximum size, its prey is correspondingly tiny — mosquito larvae, small midges, microcrustaceans, and similar fauna that populate the quiet forest swamps it inhabits.
In the aquarium, juveniles accept brine shrimp nauplii (Artemia) readily. Adults perform best on live or frozen small invertebrate foods — Daphnia, bloodworm, Cyclops, Tubifex, and micro-worm are all taken with enthusiasm. The species can be weaned onto high-quality dried foods formulated for killifish or small carnivores, though live and frozen foods maintain condition and colour better than a diet of dried food alone. Feeding twice daily in small amounts suited to the fish's small gape keeps specimens in optimal health.
Mating
Aphyosemion exiguum is a non-annual killifish and a plant- or substrate-spawner — it does not bury eggs in mud substrate with a diapause period, but instead deposits adhesive eggs on fine-leaved plants, floating mops, or sunken peat fibre over an extended spawning season. This spawning mode reflects the species' origin in permanent, forest-shaded waterways where there is no dry season that would select for diapausing eggs.
Male courtship follows the typical Aphyosemion pattern: males display laterally to females, erecting their fins and flaring their colours to emphasise the red horizontal banding and spotted pattern. A receptive female is led toward a spawning site — a clump of fine-leaved plant, a floating mop, or a sunken pad of peat moss — where a brief embrace releases a single egg per spawning act. Spawning bouts are repeated across multiple sessions; the fish do not produce a single large clutch but deposit a few eggs per day over days or weeks.
Eggs are largish relative to body size, adhesive, and are deposited singly — typically on the bottom substrate or sunken material rather than among floating vegetation, reflecting the FishBase reproductive guild classification of open-water or substratum egg-scatterer rather than a strict plant-spawner. No parental care is provided after egg deposition.
Breeding
Breeding Aphyosemion exiguum is considered attainable for a hobbyist with modest killifish experience. The species is typically conditioned on live or frozen small invertebrates before being placed in a dedicated breeding setup. A small, dimly lit tank of 5.5–10 US gal with soft, slightly acidic water (pH around 6.4, hardness toward the lower end of the 5–12 dH range, temperature approximately 72 °F / 72 °F) suits the species well. Tannin-stained water produced by peat filtration or Indian almond leaves mimics the forest-stream conditions of the natural habitat.
Spawning mops of dark wool or Java moss clumps placed on or near the bottom provide the substrate on which eggs are deposited. Eggs incubate in water — not in dried peat — and hatch after approximately 12–20 days at 72 °F (72 °F), consistent with data from both FishBase and hobbyist accounts. The incubation period is temperature-dependent and may shorten slightly at warmer temperatures. Fry are free-swimming at hatching and accept Artemia nauplii immediately; infusoria or commercial micro-fry foods can supplement the first days if nauplii are unavailable.
The eggs can be collected and incubated separately — in a small container of water from the breeding tank — or the mops can be moved to a separate hatching tank to prevent parental predation. Adults show no aggression toward eggs in a well-set-up tank, but removing eggs to hatch separately is standard killifish practice and reduces losses. Growth of fry is steady and the species reaches sexual maturity within a few months under good conditions.
In the aquarium
Aphyosemion exiguum is regarded as a manageable killifish for hobbyists stepping beyond the easiest introductory species. The British Killifish Association notes that while adults are not particularly difficult to keep, the species does best under conditions tailored to its natural habitat: soft, gently acidic water, subdued lighting, live or frozen invertebrate foods, and a quiet, well-planted tank free from boisterous tankmates. A small species tank of 5.5–10 US gal is ideal; the fish is too small and timid for a community setup with larger or faster-moving species.
Water chemistry should track the natural parameters: pH 6–7, hardness 5–12 dH (soft), temperature 70–75 °F. Filtration should be gentle — a sponge filter is preferable to a power filter that creates excessive current. Subdued lighting and a generous cover of floating plants or surface vegetation recreate the forest-stream shading the species experiences in the wild and are appreciated by both sexes.
The species is best kept as a pair or as a small group with more females than males to distribute male attention. Males in good condition are active and display frequently; a well-decorated tank with sight-breaks prevents persistent chasing. A tight-fitting lid is important, as Aphyosemion species are capable jumpers. The jewel killi is a rewarding species for the killifish specialist: its modest care requirements are offset by the handsome colouration of males and the satisfaction of a steady production of fry on bottom-spawning mops.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Aphyosemion exiguum as Least Concern in February 2009 (FishBase). This assessment reflects a relatively broad distribution across the lowland rainforest drainage systems of Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and the Congo basin — a range wide enough, and with sufficient habitat connectivity, that the species is not considered at immediate risk under the prevailing criteria.
Nonetheless, the Cameroon and Gabon rainforest belt is subject to ongoing pressure from logging, agricultural expansion — particularly oil palm and cocoa cultivation — and associated road-building that fragments forest habitat and alters the hydrology of small forest streams. The soft-water, shaded forest swamps that Aphyosemion exiguum depends upon are sensitive to changes in canopy cover; deforestation can alter water chemistry, siltation rates, and temperature regimes in ways that disadvantage specialist forest-stream species. Wild collection for the killifish hobby trade occurs but is unlikely to constitute a significant population-level pressure given the low commercial volume involved and the species' wide range.
The 2009 assessment is now more than fifteen years old, and updated population trend data across the full range would be valuable. Monitoring of forest-stream killifish communities in the Dja and Boumba river basins — key protected areas within Aphyosemion exiguum's range — as part of broader biodiversity assessments would help ensure that any emerging threats are detected before the species' status deteriorates.
