Aphyosemion cameronense is a non-annual killifish native to the rainforest drainage basins of southern Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and the Republic of Congo, where it inhabits the shaded, slow-moving reaches of small forest streams and swampy brooklets. Described by Boulenger in 1903 from material collected near the Kribi (Kienke) and Dja rivers, it belongs to subgenus Mesoaphyosemion and stands at the centre of the A. cameronense species complex — a cluster of closely related forms distributed across the Guineo-Congolian forest block, each population distinguished by subtle differences in male coloration and meristics. Long-lived and comparatively straightforward to maintain for a wild killi, it remains a rewarding subject for specialists drawn to West and Central African nothobranchiid diversity.

Taxonomy & naming

Aphyosemion cameronense was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1903 from specimens collected at the Kribi (Kienke) River and Dja River in southern Cameroon, the type locality being associated with George Latimer Bates's 1903 collecting expedition. The authority is therefore presented in parentheses, indicating the species has been moved since its original placement. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong) records the valid combination as Aphyosemion cameronense (Boulenger, 1903), placing it within the large West and Central African genus Aphyosemion — today assigned to the family Nothobranchiidae.

The species is the nominal member of the A. cameronense species complex and is placed in the subgenus Mesoaphyosemion by the American Killifish Association reference library. The complex encompasses a cluster of closely related taxa distributed across the Guineo-Congolian lowland forest block; populations separated by river catchments frequently display distinct male colour patterns and slight meristic differences that can make field identification challenging. Numerous collection codes and population designations circulate in the hobby, reflecting decades of targeted locality collecting.

The genus name Aphyosemion is derived from the Greek aphyo (small fish) and semeion (signal or marking) — an allusion to the vivid, contrasting colour patterns that distinguish males across the genus. The specific epithet cameronense means 'of Cameroon', the country in which the type specimens were collected.

Morphology

Aphyosemion cameronense is a slender, moderately compressed killifish reaching approximately 2 in standard length (FishBase; American Killifish Association). Males display the vivid chromatic patterning typical of the genus: a base coloration of greenish to blue-green overlaid with red or orange spotting, streaking, or reticulation on the flanks, and colourful unpaired fins with contrasting marginal bands. Fin shape is rounded; the dorsal and anal fins are positioned posteriorly and may be slightly pointed in mature males. Meristic counts recorded by the AKA reference library give D = 11–13 dorsal fin rays and A = 14–17 anal fin rays.

Females are substantially plainer: brownish to olive-grey overall with little or no spotting, smaller fins, and a rounded body profile. The size of the eggs — recorded at approximately 0.5 in diameter — is consistent with the non-annual reproductive mode, where eggs incubate submerged rather than entering diapause in dried substrate. Sexual dimorphism in coloration is pronounced and allows reliable sex determination from a young age.

Habitat

In the wild, Aphyosemion cameronense occupies permanent or near-permanent waters: swamps, swampy sections of shallow brooks, and small streams in inland-plains rainforest. FishBase describes the habitat as slow-moving and shaded, with dark forest cover overhead reducing light penetration and maintaining the cool, stable temperatures the species requires. The AKA reference library notes wild individuals reported in substantial numbers in suitable streams near river banks.

The native drainage basins span several major Guineo-Congolian catchments: the Sanaga, Nyong, Ntem, Lobo, Dja, Boumé, Boumba, and Ivindo rivers, the last lying in Gabon. This distribution covers the inland plateau and coastal lowland rainforest of southern Cameroon and extends into Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and the Republic of Congo. Water chemistry at collection sites is soft and slightly acidic; FishBase records pH 6.5 and 68 °F as typical ambient conditions, consistent with the tannin-stained, mineral-poor waters characteristic of Central African rainforest floor streams.

Feeding

Like other members of the genus, Aphyosemion cameronense is a micropredator. In natural habitats it feeds on small aquatic invertebrates: crustaceans, insect larvae, zooplankton, and other invertebrates at or near the water surface and in the leaf litter of forest-floor streams. The small, upturned mouth is well-suited to surface and mid-water feeding.

In the aquarium the species accepts a range of small live and frozen foods: daphnia, artemia nauplii and adults, chironomid (bloodworm) larvae, tubifex, and similar microprey. A varied diet of suitably sized live or frozen invertebrates maintains the best coloration in males and supports reproductive condition in both sexes. Dried or pelleted foods may be accepted by established aquarium specimens, though live and frozen foods are strongly preferred.

Mating

Aphyosemion cameronense is a non-annual killifish with a plant-spawning reproductive mode: pairs deposit adhesive eggs individually onto fine-leaved plants, plant roots, or fine-fibre spawning mops near the substrate, scattering eggs over days and weeks rather than in a single spawning event. This mode contrasts sharply with the annual killifishes, which bury non-adhesive diapausing eggs in soft substrate and require a dry phase for development.

Males in breeding condition display intensified coloration and court females with lateral displays and fin-spreading behaviour. The AKA reference library notes that wild-caught individuals can be slightly more challenging to bring into spawning condition than tank-bred F1 and subsequent generations, suggesting an acclimation element to successful captive spawning. A well-planted aquarium or one furnished with fine-fibre spawning mops replicates the physical spawning substrate available in the leaf-litter and root tangles of natural forest streams. The egg diameter of approximately 0.5 in is typical for non-annual Aphyosemion.

Breeding

Eggs are deposited individually and adhere to plants or mop fibres, where they incubate submerged in water over 15–20 days before hatching — no dry or diapausing phase is involved. The AKA reference library notes that eggs can be removed daily by inspecting spawning mops or plants and transferring eggs to a small incubation container with fresh, aged water of similar chemistry. Fry are reported to vary in size between populations, and growth is slow: the AKA source records approximately eight months from hatching to sexual maturity.

For breeding, a species or pair tank with a mature sponge filter, subdued lighting, a fine-leafed plant such as Java moss, and one or more dark fine-fibre mops produces the best results. Soft, slightly acidic water matching the chemistry of the native habitat (pH around 6.0–6.8, temperature 68–73 °F) is recommended. Fry can generally be left with the parents in a sufficiently well-planted or structured setup; the AKA source reports fry safe with parents, though separating the egg collection simplifies fry management. First foods are infusoria or very fine-grade commercial fry powder, progressing to freshly hatched artemia nauplii as the fry grow.

In the aquarium

Aphyosemion cameronense is one of the more accessible species of the A. cameronense complex for the experienced killifish keeper. The AKA reference library characterises it as manageable in a well-planted natural breeding setup, with fry safe alongside adults — a practical advantage over some more demanding West African killis. A small, species-only aquarium of 10–15 US gal is appropriate for a breeding pair or a small group of one male and two or three females; keeping multiple males together risks persistent aggression and fin damage.

Water should be soft and slightly acidic, maintained at a temperature between 20 and 73 °F; temperatures above 77 °F are not well tolerated and shorten the lifespan of what is, for a killi, a comparatively long-lived species. Dense planting with Java moss, Ceratopteris, or similar fine-leaved plants, combined with tannin-stained (peat-filtered or leaf-litter-infused) water, promotes the best condition and coloration. A tight-fitting cover is essential, since killifishes of this genus are accomplished jumpers.

The species is traded in the specialist killifish hobby under a variety of collection codes and population designations reflecting its broad natural distribution; hobbyists should ensure that individuals from different populations are not mixed, both to preserve genetic integrity and because population-specific colour variants are a significant part of the appeal of the A. cameronense complex.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Aphyosemion cameronense as Least Concern in February 2009, reflecting a reasonably broad natural distribution across southern Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and the Republic of Congo, and the species' occurrence in multiple river catchments rather than a single restricted locality. The assessment noted that populations are found across a substantial area of the Guineo-Congolian rainforest block and that no population-level declines were documented at the time of evaluation.

Nevertheless, the long-term picture for forest-floor stream killies in this region is not without concern. Deforestation and agricultural expansion in the Guineo-Congolian lowlands — driven by timber extraction, oil palm, and smallholder agriculture — progressively degrade the shaded, stable-temperature stream habitats on which the species depends. The same forest-clearing activities that alter stream hydrology and increase sedimentation reduce the leaf-litter input and riparian cover that characterise the micro-habitats where A. cameronense is most abundant. No targeted conservation measures specific to this species are known, though its occurrence within parts of protected forest areas in Cameroon and Gabon provides incidental habitat protection. Continued monitoring of the species complex and its habitats is warranted given the pace of land-use change in the region.
