Labeobarbus brevispinis is a large riverine barb endemic to Cameroon, occurring in the Lokundje and Sanaga river systems and the Faro-Bénoué basin. Described by Holly in 1927, it belongs to the African yellowfish assemblage — robust, deep-bodied cyprinids that share their broad rivers with other large barbs and characins. Taxonomy & naming

Labeobarbus brevispinis was described by Marcos Holly in 1927, with type material drawn from the Lokundje River near Lolodorf and the Sanaga Rapids, both in what is now Cameroon. The original description placed the species in an older generic concept; the current valid combination, Labeobarbus brevispinis (Holly, 1927), reflects its assignment to Labeobarbus, the African yellowfish genus that unites the large river barbs of sub-Saharan Africa. The parenthetical authority signals the subsequent generic transfer.

Labeobarbus is a large and taxonomically complex African genus encompassing the yellowfish of southern Africa, the large barbs of East Africa's rift drainages, and species such as brevispinis from the Congo and Gulf of Guinea watersheds of Central and West Africa. Older literature may list it under Barbus, the historical catch-all from which most African barb genera have since been separated. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the governing authority for the current valid placement.

Morphology

FishBase records a maximum total length of 9 in for males, placing L. brevispinis firmly in the larger-barb category within its regional fauna. Like other members of Labeobarbus, it is expected to be a deep-bodied, moderately compressed cyprinid with the subterminal to inferior mouth typical of benthic foragers in fast-flowing African rivers, equipped with a fleshy lower lip suited to rasping aufwuchs and picking invertebrates from hard substrates.

Detailed morphological data for this species are sparse in the accessible literature. The species epithet brevispinis — "short spine" — refers to a feature of the dorsal fin, distinguishing it from congeners with a longer or more prominent dorsal spine. Beyond this diagnostic character, coloration and precise fin-ray counts are not well documented in sources available to this profile.

Habitat

Labeobarbus brevispinis inhabits freshwater rivers in Cameroon, with confirmed records from the Lokundje River (a coastal river draining into the Atlantic), the Sanaga River system (the largest river in Cameroon), and the Faro-Bénoué basin (a major tributary of the Niger system in northern Cameroon). This distribution spans both the humid coastal and forest zones and the more seasonal savanna-edge drainages of northern Cameroon, indicating some ecological breadth.

Large African river barbs of this type typically occupy fast to moderate currents over sand, gravel and rock, often in well-oxygenated stretches. There is no pair bond, no territory maintained beyond the transient courtship chase, and no nest of any kind.

Courtship follows the typical barb pattern: males in breeding condition drive gravid females through the water column or over gravel and rocky substrate, releasing eggs and milt simultaneously. The eggs are semi-adhesive and settle among gravel or vegetation, entirely without parental attention once laid.

Breeding

No captive breeding of Labeobarbus brevispinis has been recorded in the hobbyist literature, and the species is not currently established in the ornamental trade. In the wild, large African river barbs typically spawn seasonally, with the onset of rains triggering movements and reproductive activity. Females scatter hundreds to thousands of eggs over suitable substrate — gravel beds, flooded root mats, or shallow riparian margins — without guarding them.

Adults give no parental care whatsoever; both eggs and larvae are left entirely to their own survival. Hatching and larval development in wild conditions depend on water temperature and oxygenation, with larvae dispersing into the current or sheltering among substrate interstices during early development.

In the aquarium

Labeobarbus brevispinis is not found in the ornamental fish trade and is not kept in home aquaria. At up to 9 in, it would require a very large aquarium even if available, and its ecological requirements — strong current, high oxygenation, and the broad, open water of large African rivers — are difficult to replicate domestically. The species is known primarily from natural history collections and field surveys rather than the hobby.

For aquarists interested in large African barbs, related Labeobarbus species from more accessible regions (particularly the yellowfish of southern Africa) are occasionally encountered in specialist circles, though most remain public-aquarium rather than home-aquarium fish.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Labeobarbus brevispinis as Least Concern (LC) in 2009, reflecting that no major population decline was detected at the time of assessment. The species' distribution across multiple river systems in Cameroon — the coastal Lokundje, the large Sanaga system, and the Faro-Bénoué basin — gives it a buffer against single-basin threats.

Nonetheless, the pressures facing Cameroon's freshwater biodiversity are real and intensifying. The Sanaga basin in particular has been subject to hydropower development, including large dam projects that fragment fish populations and alter flow regimes. Agricultural runoff, artisanal mining, and deforestation of riparian zones are ongoing concerns across all three basins in the species' range. The Least Concern listing is now over fifteen years old; an updated assessment would better reflect current conditions. No specific conservation measures targeting this species are documented.
