Enteromius pinnimaculatus is a small, newly described African barb endemic to southern Gabon, known from just two confirmed localities in the tributaries of the Louetsi and Bibaka Rivers. Described by Mipounga and colleagues in 2019, it is distinguished from its closest relative, E. walkeri, by a suite of meristic and morphometric characters — including vertebral count, barbel length, and scale counts — as well as a distinctive colour pattern of three to four round spots on the flanks and multiple dark spots on the dorsal fin that give the species its name. Its extremely restricted range and the threat of proposed dam construction in southern Gabon earned it an IUCN Vulnerable listing at its very first assessment.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius pinnimaculatus was formally described in 2019 by Mipounga, Cutler, Mve Beh, Adam and Sidlauskas, with the description published in the Journal of Fish Biology (Wiley). The species belongs to the large African genus Enteromius, a diverse assemblage of small to medium-sized cyprinid barbs distributed across sub-Saharan Africa and into parts of North Africa. Enteromius has been the subject of ongoing revision as molecular and morphological work continues to unpick the old catch-all genus Barbus, and new species from poorly surveyed river systems in Central and West-Central Africa continue to be added.

The epithet pinnimaculatus combines the Latin pinna (fin) with maculatus (spotted), referring to the diagnostic dark spotting on the dorsal fin — a character that separates the species from closely related Enteromius at a glance. The authors diagnosed E. pinnimaculatus from E. walkeri principally by differences in vertebral number, maximum standard length, barbel length, caudal peduncle length, and lateral-line and circumpeduncular scale counts, in addition to the fin-spot pattern. No junior synonyms or earlier combinations are known; the species has no history under older genus names such as Barbus or Puntius.

Morphology

Enteromius pinnimaculatus is a small barb. The species is characterised by a combination of three to four rounded dark spots arranged along the flanks and multiple discrete dark spots on the dorsal fin — the feature encoded in its name. These markings set it apart from E. walkeri, which lacks the same fin-spot arrangement.

Morphometrically, the species is distinguished by its vertebral count, a relatively short barbel, a particular caudal peduncle length, and specific lateral-line and circumpeduncular scale counts. Like most small Enteromius it has the moderately elongate, laterally compressed body typical of the genus, with the two pairs of barbels present in Enteromius. Detailed measurements and counts are reported in the original description (Mipounga et al., Journal of Fish Biology, 2019); published data on maximum size are limited given the species' recent description.

Habitat

The species is known from the tributaries of the Louetsi and Bibaka Rivers in southern Gabon — two localities within the Congo Basin drainage system. These are forested river systems of equatorial Central Africa, typical of the interior Gabon landscape where small stream tributaries run through lowland and montane forest over laterite or sandy substrates.

No detailed water-chemistry data specific to E. pinnimaculatus have been published. Tributary streams of this part of Gabon generally flow through humid forest, producing soft, mildly acidic to near-neutral conditions, though savanna-adjacent systems can be more variable. The Congo Basin as a whole supports one of the world's most diverse freshwater fish faunas, and the Louetsi-Bibaka drainage remains relatively understudied.

Feeding

No specific dietary data have been published for Enteromius pinnimaculatus. Small Enteromius are typically opportunistic omnivores, consuming small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, and worms — alongside algae, detritus, and plant matter picked from the substrate and the water column. This foraging strategy is broadly consistent across the genus and suits stream-dwelling barbs that exploit seasonal pulses of invertebrate prey.

In any aquarium setting, such species generally accept fine-grade pellets, quality flake, and small live or frozen foods such as bloodworm and daphnia without difficulty, though E. pinnimaculatus is not an established aquarium fish and no husbandry record exists.

Mating

Enteromius pinnimaculatus, as an Enteromius barb, is expected to follow the egg-scattering, non-guarding reproductive strategy universal in the genus and across the barb group more broadly. No spawning observations have been recorded for the species specifically, given its extremely recent description and absence from the aquarium trade.

In barbs generally, courtship involves a male driving a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate; the pair press together briefly as eggs and milt are released. No territory is defended, no nest is constructed, and no pair bond persists beyond the spawning act itself.

Breeding

No captive-breeding records exist for Enteromius pinnimaculatus. As a member of Enteromius and the broader barb clade, the species is presumed to be an egg-scatterer that deposits adhesive eggs over fine-leaved plants, roots, gravel, or other substrate, with no parental care given at any stage. Adults of barb species typically eat their own eggs when given access to them.

The extremely limited wild population — known from fewer than five localities across two river systems — and the species' absence from the ornamental trade mean that captive husbandry and breeding remain entirely undocumented. Conservation-driven ex-situ breeding programmes have not been reported.

In the aquarium

Enteromius pinnimaculatus is not available in the ornamental fish trade and is unknown in the hobby. It was described from a very small number of specimens from remote tributaries in southern Gabon and has not appeared in collections or export inventories.

Based on the biology of comparable small Enteromius species, it would likely function as an active, shoaling mid-water fish suited to a planted aquarium with soft, slightly acidic to neutral water reflecting its Central African forest-stream origin. Until wild populations are better understood and conservation status is clarified, no collection for the trade is appropriate.

Conservation

Enteromius pinnimaculatus is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List. The assessment is grounded in the species' extremely restricted range: it is known from fewer than five localities, with only two confirmed sites — tributaries of the Louetsi and Bibaka Rivers in southern Gabon. This makes it a strict Gabon endemic with a very small area of occupancy.

The principal identified threat is proposed dam development within the species' range in southern Gabon. Dam construction in the Louetsi and Bibaka tributary systems would directly alter or destroy the stream habitat on which the species depends, with potential for catastrophic population loss given that no other localities are currently known. Deforestation, logging-associated sedimentation, and changes to flow regimes in Gabon's interior river systems represent additional background pressures on the freshwater fauna of this region. The species' recent description (2019) means that further survey work is needed to establish whether additional populations exist elsewhere in the drainage.
