Enteromius radari is a small African barb described in 2022 from the Lowa basin in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo — a benthopelagic stream fish reaching about 3.5 in standard length, distinguished by its weakly thickened and serrated dorsal spine and a distinctive colour pattern at the dorsal-fin base. Molecular work on four populations revealed a well-supported lineage with internal genetic distances of 5.6–6.1%, and the species is considered probably endemic to the Lowa drainage. Named for Dr. Honoris Radar Nishilu, former chief manager of Kahuzi-Biega National Park, whose protected landscape overlaps the species' range, it is assessed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN: recent intensive collecting efforts across its known tributaries have returned nothing, suggesting local disappearance driven by escalating human pressure on the basin's headwater streams.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius radari was described in 2022 by Kisekelwa, Snoeks, Decru, Schedel, Isumbisho and Vreven, published in the journal Systematics and Biodiversity. The description was built on specimens from four populations within the Lowa basin of eastern DRC, which formed a single well-supported molecular lineage with pairwise genetic distances of 5.6–6.1% among the population samples — a level consistent with species-level divergence in African cyprinids.

The genus Enteromius was resurrected for a large assemblage of African barbs that were formerly lumped in the old catch-all genus Barbus (and sometimes Puntius). The Catalog of Fishes recognises the valid combination as Enteromius radari Kisekelwa, Snoeks, Decru, Schedel, Isumbisho & Vreven, 2022, with no earlier synonym on record. The species epithet honours Dr. Honoris Radar Nishilu, a Congolese conservationist who served as chief manager of Kahuzi-Biega National Park — the montane forest reserve whose catchments drain into the Lowa system.

Morphology

Enteromius radari is a small barb reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 3.5 in. It is a benthopelagic fish with the moderately compressed, elongate body form typical of small African stream barbs. Diagnostic characters noted in the original description include a weakly thickened and serrated dorsal spine and distinct colour and scale patterns at the base of the dorsal fin; together with the molecular data, these features separate it from co-occurring Lowa basin congeners.

Detailed meristic and morphometric data beyond the above are not yet widely reported outside the primary literature. Sexual dimorphism has not been formally characterised for the species, though a pattern of females becoming deeper-bodied when gravid would be typical for the genus.

Habitat

The species is known from the upper reaches of left-bank tributaries of the Lowa River in the eastern Congo basin, with collecting localities tied to the upper Malagarazi basin sector of the drainage. FishBase records a pH range of 6.5–7.0 for the species, consistent with mildly acidic to neutral headwater streams draining the volcanic and montane terrain east of the Congo basin proper.

The habitat is characterised as freshwater, benthopelagic stream habitat — the fish holds position near the bed or in midwater of clear, fast-flowing tributaries in an area of high-altitude forest and savanna-forest transition. Kahuzi-Biega National Park, whose catchments feed the Lowa system, provides some protected land cover over part of the probable range, though the tributaries that held the species have experienced growing human encroachment.

Feeding

No dedicated dietary study has been published for Enteromius radari. By analogy with closely related small African Enteromius of comparable size and stream habitat, it likely feeds opportunistically on small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans and worms — along with algal films, diatoms and organic detritus picked from the substrate and water column.

In the aquarium, comparable African barbs accept good-quality flakes and small pellets, supplemented with live or frozen invertebrates such as bloodworm and daphnia. Given the species' Critically Endangered status and its absence from the ornamental trade, its diet in captivity is largely an academic question.

Mating

Like all barbs, Enteromius radari is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No mating observations have been published, but the pattern universal to Enteromius and the broader barb lineage applies: a driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, and the two release eggs and milt together in a brief spawning embrace. No nest is built, no territory is defended beyond the transient act of courtship, and neither parent guards eggs or larvae.

Spawning in small stream barbs of this type is typically triggered by seasonal changes in water level and temperature associated with the rainy season, and by good feeding condition.

Breeding

Enteromius radari is not established in the aquarium hobby and has not been bred in captivity as far as published records show. Its Critically Endangered status and very restricted distribution mean that no breeding programme or ex-situ conservation effort has been publicly reported.

In the wild, reproduction almost certainly follows the standard barb pattern: adhesive eggs are scattered over fine substrate, roots, or vegetation and receive no parental care; adults would readily consume the eggs if they encountered them. Larvae hatch within days and become free-swimming at a small size, dependent on microinvertebrates for first foods.

In the aquarium

Enteromius radari is not present in the aquarium trade. It was described only in 2022, its entire known range is a handful of threatened Congolese headwater streams, and recent intensive collecting efforts in those streams have been unsuccessful — suggesting the species may already be functionally extirpated from its type localities.

Keeping or breeding this fish in a conservation-oriented setting would require field collection under appropriate DRC permits, which is presently not feasible given the security situation in eastern DRC and the apparent scarcity of wild individuals. Any future captive programme would be a conservation rather than hobby undertaking.

Conservation

Enteromius radari is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List under criteria B1ab(ii,iv)c(i,iii). The assessment notes that the species is endemic to the upper reaches of two left-bank tributaries of the upper Lowa basin — probably the Muyovozi and Kinwa affluents — and that both streams are threatened by human activities including agriculture, mining, and deforestation in the surrounding landscape. Critically, repeated collecting efforts at all known localities have returned no specimens, indicating local disappearance from at least part of the range and possibly full extirpation.

The overlap with Kahuzi-Biega National Park offers nominal protection to some of the catchment, but the park itself has experienced significant encroachment and loss of effectiveness as a protected area in recent decades due to armed conflict and population displacement in eastern DRC. Unless collecting efforts prove successful in unsampled parts of the basin, the prognosis for wild populations is poor. The species is unknown in captivity and has no ex-situ safety net.
