Taxonomy & naming
Enteromius ruforum was formally described by Ilodiri, Huyghe, Costa, Baba, Mizani and Vreven in 2024, with the original description published in the Journal of Fish Biology. The type locality is the Angadiko River, a left-bank sub-affluent of the Nepoko River situated within the Okapi Wildlife Reserve in northeastern DRC.
The genus Enteromius is a large and taxonomically complex African genus that has absorbed much of what was formerly placed in the broad catch-all genus Barbus — and, for smaller species, in Puntius and Systomus as those were applied in older African literature. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Enteromius as the current valid genus for this species. The epithet ruforum, from Latin, refers to a reddish or reddish-brown coloration noted in the type material.
Molecular analysis shows a Kimura two-parameter (K2P) genetic distance of 11.2% separating E. ruforum from E. kamolondoensis, its nearest described congener, confirming species-level divergence. The two taxa share the small-river Congo Basin fauna but differ in body proportions: E. ruforum has a body depth of 30.6–33.3% SL and an eye diameter of 26.2–28.0% HL.
Morphology
Enteromius ruforum is a small-bodied barb with a body depth of 30.6–33.3% of standard length, placing it in the moderately deep-bodied range typical of many small Enteromius from Central African river systems. The eye is relatively large, measuring 26.2–28.0% of head length — a common trait among small insectivorous stream barbs that rely on sharp vision in the broken light of forest-shaded waterways.
Detailed meristic data and coloration descriptions from the original description are not publicly accessible at time of writing (the primary publication is behind a paywall), and no supplementary images have been widely reproduced. The specific epithet ruforum is suggestive of a reddish or reddish-brown tone in the body or fins, likely a feature used to distinguish this species from its congeners. Data on scalation, lateral-line count and fin-ray formulae await broader reporting.
Habitat
The type series was collected from the Angadiko River, a small left-bank tributary of the Nepoko River in the Okapi Wildlife Reserve, Ituri Province, northeastern DRC. The Nepoko is itself a right-bank tributary of the Aruwimi, which feeds into the Congo River system. The Okapi Wildlife Reserve is a UNESCO World Heritage Site covering dense equatorial forest in the Ituri basin, and its rivers are typically small, shaded, soft-water forest streams with moderate current over sandy or mixed substrates.
No water-chemistry data specific to this species are available in the accessible literature. By analogy with the hydrological character of the Ituri–Nepoko basin, the Angadiko River is expected to carry soft, slightly acidic water in the range typical of lowland Congo Basin forest streams, with temperatures broadly following the warm equatorial climate of the region. Data sparse; specific pH, hardness, and temperature measurements are not reported.
Feeding
No feeding observations have been published for Enteromius ruforum specifically. Like most small Enteromius of the Congo Basin, it is presumed to be an opportunistic omnivore, taking small aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates, algal films, and fine organic detritus from the substrate and water column of its shaded forest stream habitat.
Small-stream Enteromius across Central Africa generally pick food items from leaf litter, biofilm-covered rocks, and submerged wood, and are well suited to patchy, seasonally variable food availability in river systems subject to flood pulses and seasonal leaf fall.
Mating
No field or aquarium observations of reproductive behaviour have been published for Enteromius ruforum. As an Enteromius and a member of the family Cyprinidae, it is a typical egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Courtship in barbs of this type involves a driving male pursuing a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, the pair releasing eggs and milt simultaneously with no bond formed beyond the spawning act.
No nest is built and no territory is defended beyond a brief, transient burst of courtship activity. Dominant males may display intensified colour during the breeding period, and competition between males occurs as each attempts to position alongside a ripe female.
Breeding
Enteromius ruforum has not been kept or bred in captivity at the time of writing; the species was only described in 2024 and is restricted to a protected but remote part of northeastern DRC. No aquarium husbandry or captive-breeding data exist.
In common with other small egg-scattering Enteromius, the species would be expected to scatter adhesive eggs over fine substrate, gravel, or among plant roots, with both adults and eggs subsequently left to fend for themselves. The eggs receive no parental care, and in a natural setting the adults disperse after spawning. Hatching and larval development timelines remain unknown.
In the aquarium
Enteromius ruforum is not established in the aquarium hobby and is unlikely to enter the trade in the foreseeable future. Its origin within a protected reserve, the remoteness of the Okapi Wildlife Reserve, and the active threats to its limited habitat make collection for ornamental purposes neither practical nor appropriate.
For aquarists interested in small Central African stream barbs, other Enteromius species from more accessible parts of the Congo Basin or West Africa are occasionally available through specialist importers and represent a biologically comparable experience. E. ruforum is primarily of scientific interest as a newly documented component of the Ituri basin fauna.
Conservation
Enteromius ruforum is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List under criterion D2, which applies to species with a very restricted area of occupancy or number of locations such that they face a high probability of qualifying for a higher threat category or becoming extinct within a short time frame if a plausible threatening factor operates. The species is known only from the Angadiko River within the Okapi Wildlife Reserve.
Three principal threats are documented: habitat destruction from human encroachment and logging around the reserve; illegal fishing using ichthyotoxins (plant-based or chemical poisons), which are non-selective and acutely damaging to small stream communities; and dam-building proposals or activities affecting the Nepoko catchment. Although the Okapi Wildlife Reserve is a World Heritage Site, illegal activity inside its boundaries has been a persistent and documented problem. The combination of an extremely small known range and active, ongoing pressures places this species at genuine risk, and any further degradation of the Angadiko River could be catastrophic for the known population.
