Enteromius stigmasemion is a small African cyprinid described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1936 and currently known only from the Central African Republic, making it one of the more poorly documented members of the vast and still-unsettled genus Enteromius. Like its congeners it inhabits freshwater streams and rivers of sub-Saharan Africa and is presumed to be an egg-scattering opportunist with no parental investment. The species has attracted little scientific or hobbyist attention, and published data on its size, water chemistry preferences and precise distributional limits remain sparse.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius stigmasemion was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1936. The species was originally placed in the old catch-all genus Barbus, which once accommodated the vast majority of small African and Asian cyprinids under a single, polyphyletic umbrella. Subsequent revisionary work progressively dismantled that assembly; the African species retained in or moved to Enteromius represent one lineage of the former Barbus aggregate.

The genus Enteromius is the largest genus of vertebrates in Africa, encompassing well over 350 valid species distributed across sub-Saharan river systems. Ongoing molecular and morphological revisions mean that species-level placements within the genus continue to shift, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) serves as the governing authority for the current valid combination Enteromius stigmasemion (Fowler, 1936). The parenthetical authority notation reflects Fowler's original description under a different genus name.

No subspecies or population-level variants are currently recognised, and the species appears to have attracted no synonyms in the subsequent literature. Data sparse.

Spawning may be seasonal and linked to rainfall, temperature shifts or changes in river level across the species' central African range, as is common among Enteromius in seasonal savanna and forest-margin systems. Breeding

Enteromius stigmasemion has not been documented in captivity, and no aquarium breeding accounts are available. The reproductive mode inferred from its membership of Enteromius is egg-scattering with no parental care: adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs are scattered over fine-leaved plants, root tangles or gravel and immediately abandoned by both parents, which will eat the eggs if they encounter them.

Fecundity, incubation period and larval development rates are unknown. For congeners that have been bred in aquaria, eggs typically hatch within one to two days at tropical temperatures, and free-swimming larvae are initially sustained on infusoria and microscopic invertebrates. Data sparse.

Enteromius stigmasemion is not established in the aquarium hobby and is unlikely to be encountered in the trade. The Central African Republic is not a significant source of ornamental fish exports, and the species' obscurity in the scientific literature means that even specialist importers would have little information to act on.

Any husbandry recommendations would be speculative at this stage. Hobbyists keeping central African Enteromius in general would be advised to replicate clean, oxygen-rich water with a neutral to slightly acidic pH, tropical temperatures in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius, and a diet of small live and prepared foods. Conservation

Enteromius stigmasemion has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). The Central African Republic hosts a number of narrowly endemic freshwater fishes that have received little systematic conservation attention, and the pressures of habitat degradation — deforestation, agricultural runoff, artisanal mining and seasonal water abstraction — affect rivers across the region.

The species' endemism to a single country increases its vulnerability in principle, but without basic survey data on its population size, range extent, habitat condition or trends, any assessment of threat status remains premature. Targeted ichthyological surveys of the freshwater systems of the Central African Republic are needed to clarify the status of this and related endemic cyprinids.
