Enteromius syntrechalepis is a small cyprinid barb endemic to the central Congo Basin of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1949 under the name Barbus syntrechalepis, it was subsequently transferred to the large African genus Enteromius as modern phylogenetic work reorganised the old catch-all Barbus across sub-Saharan Africa. Like most of its relatives in the Congo drainage it is a data-sparse species known primarily from scientific collections, with no IUCN assessment on record and only a limited presence in the aquarium trade.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius syntrechalepis was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1949, with the original combination Barbus syntrechalepis. The species was later reclassified into Enteromius, the genus now used for a large portion of sub-Saharan African barbs following the dissolution of the unwieldy old Barbus complex. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the current valid combination as Enteromius syntrechalepis (Fowler, 1949), with the parenthetical authority reflecting the move out of Fowler's original genus.

The subfamily placement of small African barbs has shifted with molecular work; sources variously place Enteromius within Smiliogastrinae, reflecting continuing revision of the family Cyprinidae in Africa. The genus Enteromius itself encompasses hundreds of species across sub-Saharan Africa, many of them poorly known and awaiting comprehensive systematic revision. E. syntrechalepis is among the more data-sparse members of this assemblage.

Morphology

Enteromius syntrechalepis is a small barb; precise size data are sparse for this species, and published records give no definitive maximum length in the literature readily accessible outside the original description. It shares the typical Enteromius body plan: a moderately elongate, laterally compressed form with a small, protractile mouth and the characteristic convergent scale arrangement on the caudal peduncle that gives the species its name.

Detailed morphological data — meristic counts, colour pattern, fin-ray formulae — are not reproduced in secondary sources available to hobbyists, and the original 1949 description in a specialist ichthyological publication remains the primary morphological reference. The species is not known to have entered the ornamental trade, so aquarist-level observations of live colouration are absent.

Habitat

The species is a Congo Basin endemic, recorded from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The central Congo Basin encompasses an extraordinary range of freshwater habitats — from the vast main channel and its forested floodplains to shaded blackwater tributaries, smaller forest streams and seasonally inundated swamp margins. Enteromius species within this basin typically occupy smaller rivers, streams and backwaters rather than the main Congo channel.

No site-specific habitat data have been published for E. syntrechalepis in accessible secondary literature. By analogy with other small Enteromius in the central Congo drainage, the species likely inhabits slow-to-moderate flowing streams with soft, warm water and substrates of sand, mud or leaf litter beneath riparian forest. Water chemistry in such habitats is typically soft and mildly acidic, reflecting the leaching of organic matter from forest soils.

Feeding

No published dietary study exists for Enteromius syntrechalepis specifically. Small African barbs of the genus Enteromius are broadly omnivorous opportunists, feeding on small invertebrates such as aquatic insect larvae, microcrustaceans and worms, supplemented by algal filaments, diatoms and organic detritus gleaned from the substrate and the water column.

This generalised feeding strategy is consistent across the great majority of small-bodied cyprinids in African riverine habitats and is the most parsimonious inference for E. syntrechalepis in the absence of direct data.

Mating

Enteromius syntrechalepis has not been studied in courtship and no spawning observations appear in the available literature. Like all barbs, it is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No pair bond, nest, or parental territory is formed. When ready to spawn, a male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, and eggs and milt are released together in brief, pressing contact.

The eggs are adhesive and fall among plants, roots or onto the bottom. Adults do not guard the spawn and will readily consume eggs given the opportunity. There is no mouthbrooding and no bubble-nest construction in any barb.

Breeding

No captive breeding records for Enteromius syntrechalepis are known. The species does not appear to be established in the aquarium hobby, and no breeding protocols have been published for it.

By analogy with small Enteromius that have been maintained in aquaria, breeding would likely follow the standard egg-scattering template: soft, warm water in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius, fine-leaved plants or a substrate that shelters the adhesive eggs from immediate predation by the parents, and removal of the adults after spawning. Larvae would be expected to become free-swimming within a few days and to accept fine live foods at first feeding. These are generalisations from the genus; no species-specific data exist.

In the aquarium

Enteromius syntrechalepis is effectively absent from the ornamental fish trade. It is not listed among the Congo Basin barbs that appear with any regularity in specialist importers' lists, and its husbandry requirements are unstudied. General guidance for small Enteromius from the Congo Basin would apply as a starting point: warm, soft, slightly acidic water (around 75–79 °F, pH 6.0–7.0) in a planted aquarium with good filtration and dim lighting, kept in a small shoal of at least six individuals.

Any specimens that did enter the trade would likely prove hardy and undemanding once acclimated, as is typical for the genus, but this remains speculative. The species is of primarily scientific interest at present.

Conservation

Enteromius syntrechalepis has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation status. Its restriction to the Democratic Republic of the Congo means it falls within a river basin of exceptional biodiversity that is increasingly under pressure from artisanal mining, deforestation, agricultural expansion and water extraction.

The central Congo Basin remains one of the least-collected freshwater fish provinces on Earth relative to its actual diversity, and many Enteromius in the region are known from only a handful of specimens taken decades ago. Without updated survey data, the range, population size and threat status of E. syntrechalepis cannot be meaningfully evaluated. It is treated here as Not Evaluated (NE) per the available records.
