Enteromius trinotatus is a small cyprinid barb from the Aruwimi River drainage in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where it inhabits nutrient-poor, brown, acidic headwater streams coloured dark by dissolved humic acids. Reaching about 3.5 in in total length, it is one of the many spot-marked Enteromius of equatorial Africa and takes its name from the constellation of bold black blotches along its flanks — tri meaning three and notatus meaning marked. Described by Henry Weed Fowler in 1936, it was long placed in the genus Barbus before the broad revision of African cyprinids folded these species into Enteromius.

Taxonomy & naming

Enteromius trinotatus was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1936, with the type locality given as the Ituri River near Saidi's village in the Aruwimi basin (approximately 3°50'N, 27°19'E), a tributary of the Congo River in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo. The species was originally placed in the large, polyphyletic genus Barbus, and is recorded in the older literature as Barbus trinotatus Fowler, 1936. The valid combination Enteromius trinotatus (Fowler, 1936), with the parenthetical authority marking the transfer, is the current name under the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), which is the authority followed here.

The genus Enteromius encompasses a large and taxonomically complex assemblage of small to medium-sized African barbs distributed across sub-Saharan Africa. The reclassification of many former Barbus and Puntius species into Enteromius reflects ongoing efforts to resolve the deep paraphyly of the old Barbus aggregate. Additional revisionary work on the Aruwimi and broader Congo basin fauna may refine the species' placement further. The name Enteromius tetraspilus is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.

Morphology

Enteromius trinotatus reaches a maximum recorded total length of approximately 3.5 in, making it a medium-small barb. The species is characterised by 3–5 bold black spots or blotches along the flank, a pattern that gives rise to its epithet trinotatus (three-marked), though the spot count can vary slightly among individuals. The body form is the typical fusiform, moderately compressed shape seen across the small Enteromius of equatorial Africa.

Detailed meristic data beyond what is captured in the original description and regional ichthyofaunal surveys are limited for this species, reflecting the broader pattern of data scarcity for many Congo basin cyprinids. General cyprinid features — a toothless mouth with pharyngeal teeth, no jaw teeth, cycloid scales, and a single dorsal fin — apply.

Habitat

The Aruwimi River is a major right-bank tributary of the Congo, draining a large forested catchment in the northeastern DRC. Within this drainage, Enteromius trinotatus is associated with headwater streams described as nutrient-poor, brown and acidic, with high humic acid content — the tea-stained forest streams typical of equatorial African rainforest interiors. Cyprinidae are the dominant fish family in these headwaters, and Enteromius species are among the most species-rich components of that community.

The warm, soft, low-pH water of humic-acid-rich forest streams contrasts markedly with the harder, more mineral-rich water of savanna rivers elsewhere in Africa, and conditions at the type locality reflect the rainforest setting of the Ituri basin. Specific temperature and pH measurements from the type locality are not available in published sources consulted; the habitat description is drawn from ichthyofaunal survey data for the Aruwimi headwaters.

Feeding

No targeted feeding studies have been published for Enteromius trinotatus. As with most small Enteromius of forested equatorial Africa, it is presumed to be a generalised omnivore, feeding on small invertebrates — insect larvae, microcrustaceans, worms — as well as algal films, fine organic detritus, and plant fragments encountered along the stream bottom and among leaf litter. This broad omnivory is characteristic of cyprinids in similar African forest-stream habitats.

In the aquarium, small barbs of this ecological guild readily accept standard prepared foods — fine flakes and small pellets — supplemented with live or frozen invertebrate prey such as daphnia or bloodworm.

Mating

Enteromius trinotatus is, like all barbs, an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No pair bond is formed and no territory is maintained beyond a brief courtship pursuit. When a male is ready to spawn he drives a gravid female through available vegetation or over the substrate, pressing alongside her as eggs and milt are released simultaneously. The adhesive eggs fall among plant stems, roots, or into fine substrate interstices.

No nest is built, and there is no bubble-nest or mouthbrooding. Once spawning is complete the adults take no further interest in the eggs or larvae. Specific observations of wild-spawning behaviour in the Aruwimi headwaters are not on record in the sources consulted.

Breeding

Enteromius trinotatus has not been documented as an established aquarium-bred species in the hobbyist literature, and no captive breeding accounts appear in the sources consulted. Based on the biology of closely related small Enteromius, breeding in aquaria would follow the standard barb pattern: a separate spawning tank with soft, slightly acidic warm water, fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop to catch adhesive eggs, and parents removed after spawning to prevent egg predation.

A clutch of small adhesive eggs would be expected, hatching within one to two days at tropical temperatures, with free-swimming fry a few days later. Fry would be started on infusoria or similarly fine first foods, then progressed to newly hatched brine shrimp nauplii. The species' restricted distribution and rarity in the trade mean captive husbandry data remain essentially unpublished.

In the aquarium

Enteromius trinotatus is rarely if ever offered in the mainstream aquarium trade and is not documented in common hobby sources as an established aquarium fish. Its native habitat — soft, acidic, humic headwater streams in the Ituri rainforest — suggests that optimal conditions in captivity would include warm water (approximately 75–81 °F), a low to slightly acidic pH consistent with blackwater or soft forest-stream conditions, subdued lighting, and a dark substrate with driftwood and dried leaf litter to replicate the humic environment.

As a small schooling barb, it would presumably be best kept in a group of six or more individuals. Its modest size (under 3.5 in) and presumed omnivory suggest compatibility with other peaceful, similarly sized fish in a well-planted, softwater setup. Any practical husbandry guidance is necessarily provisional given the lack of published captive experience.

Conservation

Enteromius trinotatus is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with an assessment dated 16 February 2009. The evaluation concluded that the species does not meet the threshold for a threatened category, though the assessment is now more than fifteen years old and reflects data available at that time.

The species is endemic to the Aruwimi River drainage in the Democratic Republic of Congo — a relatively restricted range within an otherwise megadiverse basin. The Aruwimi basin and its Ituri headwaters sit within one of the world's great tropical rainforest blocks, which has to date buffered the watershed from some of the worst agricultural and extractive pressures affecting more accessible parts of the DRC. Ongoing concerns across the Congo basin include artisanal and industrial mining, forest conversion, and conflict-driven landscape disruption. A reassessment incorporating more recent range and population data would be valuable for this and many other Congo basin Enteromius.
