Taxonomy & naming
Hampala siamensis was formally described by Panitvong & Hui in 2025 in the Raffles Bulletin of Zoology, based on a holotype (THNHM-F-021558, 9 in SL) collected from the La-un River in Ranong Province, Peninsular Thailand. The type locality is the lower Tenasserim basin — the coastal drainage running southward along the Thai-Malay Peninsula. The species epithet siamensis refers to Siam, the historical name for Thailand, reflecting the species' origin.
Hampala is a genus of large-bodied, piscivorous cyprinids distributed across mainland and insular Southeast Asia. Prior to this description, three Hampala species were known from Thailand; H. siamensis becomes the fourth. The genus has not undergone the sweeping reclassification that affected the old catch-all genus Puntius, and the placement in Hampala has been stable. Co-occurring cyprinids at the type locality include Barbodes lateristriga and B. binotatus, two widespread Sundaland-associated barbs whose presence confirms the peninsular transitional character of the assemblage.
Morphology
The holotype measures 9 in standard length, and field observations place maximum size close to 19.5 in SL — making H. siamensis a large barb by any standard, consistent with the body plan of the Hampala group. FishBase records the maximum size at 9 in SL (based on the holotype), but this likely reflects the size of the type specimen rather than the species' maximum.
Formal morphological details from the original description include the characters that differentiate H. siamensis from its congeners, though the specific meristics and colour-pattern particulars are documented in the Raffles Bulletin paper. Like other Hampala species, it is expected to be a fusiform, robust-bodied cyprinid with the large scales and strong build of a riverine predator.
Habitat
The original description documents a clear ontogenetic habitat shift across age classes in the La-un and Lam Ru Yai rivers. Juveniles occupy densely vegetated bank areas; subadults use shallow pools characterised by boulders and fallen trees; adults inhabit the main channel and deeper pools. During the dry season, when collections were made, the fish concentrate in the clear, fast-flowing upper portions of these streams.
The rivers of the lower Tenasserim basin in Ranong and Phang-Nga provinces are clean, well-oxygenated systems draining hills that receive some of the highest annual rainfall in Thailand. Based on congener habitat preferences documented for the genus — clear to slightly tannin-stained running water with sand, gravel, rock, and mud substrates — and the original description's emphasis on clear fast water, H. siamensis is a eurytopic riverine species suited to well-oxygenated flows over structured substrates.
Feeding
Hampala siamensis is an active predator. The original description notes that it follows Mastacembelus spiny eels as they hunt, presumably exploiting prey flushed by the eels' activity — a feeding association that underscores its opportunistic piscivory. Hampala species in general are regarded as among the more effective fish predators in Southeast Asian river systems, using speed and body size to run down smaller fishes and invertebrates.
In the aquarium, large Hampala species typically require meaty foods — live or frozen fish, large invertebrates, and meaty prepared foods — and should not be kept with anything small enough to swallow. This feeding ecology makes them specialist fish for very large private installations rather than community tanks.
Mating
No spawning observations have been published for Hampala siamensis. Based on the reproductive biology of the Hampala genus and the broader cyprinid pattern, it is expected to be a seasonal egg-scattering spawner. Large riverine barbs and related cyprinids in Southeast Asia typically time reproduction to the onset of the monsoon rains, when rising water levels, increased flow, and cooler temperatures trigger upstream migrations and broadcast spawning over gravel substrates.
There is no nest, no pair bond, and no parental care in any documented Hampala species. A driving male would pursue a gravid female through the current, with eggs and milt released together in open water or over gravel, after which the adults play no further role. This pattern is uniform across cyprinids of similar ecology.
Breeding
Hampala siamensis has not been bred in captivity as of its description date. Given its large adult size and its status as a newly described species, established aquarium breeding protocols do not yet exist. Congeners such as Hampala macrolepidota, which reaches similar or larger dimensions, are rarely spawned in captivity and are generally regarded as impractical subjects for home breeding programs.
For the species' reproductive biology in the wild, the egg-scattering pattern expected of the genus means that eggs are broadcast without parental care — they are adhesive or drift with the current, developing unattended. Fecundity in large riverine cyprinids is typically high, compensating for the high mortality of unguarded eggs and larvae in flowing water.
In the aquarium
Hampala siamensis is a large, piscivorous river barb that reaches close to 19.5 in in the wild. It is emphatically not a community aquarium fish: any tankmate small enough to fit in its mouth will eventually be eaten, and its eventual size demands an exceptionally large system with powerful filtration and a strong, directed current. The species is not yet established in the aquarium trade and, as a fish described in 2025 from Peninsular Thailand, it is unlikely to appear in the hobby soon outside specialist collections.
In appropriate facilities — very large public or private tanks — it would require meaty foods, companions of comparable size and robustness, and water maintained at tropical temperatures with high dissolved oxygen consistent with fast-flowing riverine conditions. Congener husbandry notes (especially for H. macrolepidota) suggest these fish are robust once settled but can be aggressive and territorial.
Conservation
Hampala siamensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List — it was described in 2025 and is too newly named to have received a formal assessment. Its status is therefore Not Evaluated (NE). The species is currently known only from the La-un and Lam Ru Yai river systems in Ranong and Phang-Nga provinces of Peninsular Thailand, placing it in the lower Tenasserim basin.
The rivers of Ranong Province are relatively intact compared to many Thai drainage systems, benefiting from the province's protected forest areas and low population density, though water quality and flow regime can still be affected by seasonal agriculture and road construction. Large-bodied predatory fish with restricted known ranges are inherently more sensitive to habitat modification than small, widespread species, and any significant alteration to the clear, fast-flowing upper-stream habitat the species depends on would be of concern. A formal IUCN assessment is needed once the species' full distribution has been more thoroughly surveyed.
