Taxonomy & naming
Hypsibarbus salweenensis was described by Walter Rainboth in 1996 from specimens collected in the Salween River midway between Mae Sam Laep and Paleh in Mae Hong Son province, northwestern Thailand. The genus Hypsibarbus, erected for large mahseer-like barbs of mainland Southeast Asia, takes its name from the Greek hypsi (high) combined with Barbus, reflecting the deep, laterally compressed body profile shared across the genus.
The species epithet salweenensis is a Latinised toponym — "of the Salween" — directly naming the river system from which the type series was drawn. The Salween (also romanised as Thanlwin in Myanmar) is the sole known river basin for this species, and the name serves both as a distribution flag and a conservation signal. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records Hypsibarbus salweenensis Rainboth, 1996 as the valid combination. No synonyms are currently on record.
Morphology
Hypsibarbus salweenensis reaches at least 12–14 in in standard length — FishBase records a maximum of 14 in — making it one of the larger barbs in its genus. The body is silvery grey, deep and laterally compressed in the typical Hypsibarbus mould, with fins that are pale rosy to yellowish in life.
Diagnostic characters noted at description include conspicuously long barbels: the maxillary barbel runs to roughly 29% of head length and the rostral barbel to about 23% of head length. Other meristic features include a moderately-sized eye, 10–14 gill rakers (modal count 12), 14–16 circumpeduncular scales, and 30 or more scales in the lateral line. These proportions separate it from its Hypsibarbus congeners in overlapping portions of the Mekong and Chao Phraya drainages.
Habitat
The species inhabits the full depth gradient of the Salween system, from submontane headwater streams in Yunnan and the upper Myanmar reaches down to larger tributaries and the main river channel in the lowlands of Thailand. Its benthopelagic habit places it close to the bottom in flowing water, though it uses open midwater during active movement.
Seasonal abundance patterns in the lower Salween suggest a migratory lifestyle consistent with other large rheophilic barbs — fish aggregate or disperse along the river corridor in response to flood pulse and reproductive cues. Water conditions in the Salween are broadly clear to slightly turbid, moderately warm, and circumneutral; the river is not a peat-swamp blackwater system, and the species is adapted to the mineral-richer, harder water of a continental drainage rather than the soft acidic habitats of Sundaland.
Feeding
As a large benthopelagic barb in a productive river system, Hypsibarbus salweenensis likely feeds on a mixed diet of benthic invertebrates, algae, plant material, and organic detritus — a dietary breadth typical of Hypsibarbus and allied large-bodied Asian cyprinids. The long barbels suggest active bottom-probing for food items buried in substrate or concealed under rock surfaces.
The genus is valued as a food fish throughout its range, pointing to a well-developed musculature and substantial body mass that supports local fisheries. Specific dietary data for this species in the wild are sparse; inference from relatives and habitat association indicates opportunistic omnivory calibrated to river-bottom foraging.
Mating
Hypsibarbus salweenensis, like all barbs, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No pair bond is formed, no territory is defended beyond fleeting courtship pursuit, and no nest of any kind is constructed. In large river barbs of this build, spawning is typically a seasonal broadcast event tied to the monsoon flood pulse, with gravid fish aggregating in tributaries or over gravel substrates as water temperatures rise and flows increase.
Courtship involves driving behaviour in which males pursue ripe females, pressing alongside them as eggs and milt are released into the water column or over the substrate. Specific courtship accounts for this species in the wild are not documented in available sources; the pattern described follows the uniform barb reproductive template.
Breeding
Wild populations in the Salween almost certainly spawn seasonally, timed to annual flood cycles that flush nutrients, raise water temperatures, and open migratory corridors to upriver gravel beds or floodplain shallows. The seasonal aggregations reported from the lower mainstream are consistent with pre- or post-spawning movements documented in other large Hypsibarbus.
No captive breeding records for Hypsibarbus salweenensis appear in available sources. Given its size — potentially exceeding 12 in — and its apparent need for river-scale migratory cues, it is not a candidate for home-aquarium breeding. In the aquarium
Hypsibarbus salweenensis is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense. At a maximum length of 14 in it exceeds the realistic capacity of home or even public-display aquaria configured for typical community setups, and its apparent requirement for seasonal flow variation and migratory range makes replication of suitable conditions extremely difficult.
The species is encountered in local food markets within its range and is primarily significant as a component of artisanal river fisheries rather than the ornamental trade. Hobbyists interested in the Hypsibarbus genus will find smaller, more tractable relatives more suitable for captive care; this species is included here for completeness of the Salween fauna rather than as an aquarium recommendation.
Conservation
Hypsibarbus salweenensis is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, last evaluated in March 2011 and published in an amended 2020 version. The assessment credited the species as seasonally and locally common in the lower Salween mainstream, with a range spanning Yunnan, Myanmar, and northwestern Thailand. Population trend is listed as unknown.
The IUCN assessment identified overharvesting and habitat degradation — particularly vegetation removal along riparian margins — as ongoing threats, alongside the potential for significant impact from dam construction on the Salween mainstream. Unlike most major Southeast Asian rivers, the Salween has to date remained largely undammed through its main stem, which is likely a key reason the species retains LC status; proposals for large hydropower dams on the upper and middle river represent a material future risk. Local consumption and sale in small markets is documented. No conservation measures are reported as in place.
