Poropuntius hathe was described by the American ichthyologist Tyson R. Roberts in 1998 in a comprehensive review of the tropical Asian cyprinid genus Poropuntius published by the Siam Society. The original description is based on a holotype (CAS 94262) deposited at the California Academy of Sciences, taken from rapids in the Menam Moei River alongside highway 1035, 80 mi north of Mae Sot in Tak Province, northwestern Thailand.
The genus Poropuntius belongs to the family Cyprinidae (subfamily Cyprininae) and is distinct from the large, historically catch-all genus Puntius, although many Asian barbs were previously lumped under that name before successive revisions in the 1990s and 2010s clarified generic limits. The Catalog of Fishes records the valid combination as Poropuntius hathe Roberts, 1998. The species epithet hathe is a vernacular Burmese or regional name applied to this fish in its native area, though Roberts's 1998 paper provides the formal derivation in the original description. The species is noted to show high intraspecific variation, which complicates identification across its range.
Morphology
Poropuntius hathe is a short, deep-bodied barb. The largest specimens on record reach approximately 3 in standard length (about 2.5 in SL per FishBase), placing it among the smaller members of its genus. The body is laterally compressed with a notably high back relative to its length, a shape shared with many rheophilic barbs that inhabit fast-flowing water.
The species is characterized by two pairs of well-developed barbels, which is a key genus-level trait in Poropuntius. Coloration in life is striking: the caudal fin and ventral (pelvic) fins are red, and the caudal fin bears black submarginal stripes along its lobes. The lateral line counts 28 to 31 scales. The mouth is described as generalized in structure, not highly specialized for any particular feeding mode. Intraspecific variation is reported to be high, and material from the Kasat River (Ataran drainage) shows morphological differences from the Moei River type series, suggesting either geographic variation or the involvement of more than one lineage.
Habitat
The type locality of Poropuntius hathe is a stretch of rapids in the Menam Moei River — a river that forms the border between Thailand and Myanmar and is a tributary of the Salween system. The collection site lies at altitude in a rocky, fast-flowing reach in Tak Province. The species has also been recorded from the Kasat River in the Ataran drainage, a separate river that drains into the Andaman Sea via the Gyaing–Ataran system.
Water parameters recorded at collection sites point to a clean, cool to warm freshwater environment. Field data indicate a pH of approximately 7 (neutral) and water temperatures around 72 °F, consistent with upland to sub-montane clear-water rivers rather than the warm lowland or blackwater habitats associated with many Southeast Asian barbs. The substrate at the type locality is rocky rapids — the benthopelagic lifestyle assigned to this species by FishBase is consistent with a fish that moves over and among submerged rocks in moderate to swift current.
Feeding
No detailed dietary study has been published for Poropuntius hathe. In the absence of specific data, its feeding can be inferred from the genus and its generalized mouth parts, which Roberts (1998) described as not highly modified for any specialised feeding mode. Poropuntius species in general are omnivores that exploit benthic invertebrates, algae and organic material scraped or picked from rocky substrates and the surrounding current.
In the aquarium, a diet of high-quality sinking pellets and wafers, supplemented with live or frozen foods such as bloodworm and small crustaceans, would address the nutritional requirements of a generalist bottom-associated barb from rocky river habitat. The two pairs of barbels suggest active substrate-probing for food items, analogous to other barbel-bearing cyprinids in fast-water environments.
Mating
No observations of courtship or mating behaviour in Poropuntius hathe have been published. As a member of the family Cyprinidae, it follows the reproductive strategy universal in barbs: egg-scattering with no parental care. Males would be expected to pursue gravid females through the current or over the substrate of the spawning area, with eggs and milt released together during a brief embrace.
In fast-water barbs of rocky rivers, spawning typically takes place over gravel or rocky substrate in the current, with the fertilized eggs either settling into crevices or being carried downstream. No nest is built, no eggs are guarded, and no pair bond persists beyond the act of spawning. Given how little field time has been invested in this species, all reproductive details for the wild population remain undocumented.
Breeding
Poropuntius hathe has not been reported in the aquarium hobby and there are no published accounts of captive breeding. On the basis of family biology, it would be expected to scatter adhesive eggs over rocky or gravelly substrate, after which both parents disperse and provide no care. Eggs and larvae left unattended are vulnerable to predation, including by conspecifics.
Should captive specimens become available, a breeding setup analogous to that used for other fast-water Asian barbs — a well-oxygenated tank with a strong current, a rocky or gravel substrate, slightly cool and clean water near 72 °F, and neutral pH — would be a reasonable starting point. The adults should be removed after spawning to protect the eggs. Fry, if successfully raised, would likely require small live foods in early development.
In the aquarium
Poropuntius hathe is essentially unknown in the ornamental fish trade. No hobbyist records, import reports or captive-breeding accounts for this species have been located. Its natural habitat — clear, fast-flowing boulder-strewn rapids along a remote border river — suggests it is difficult to access and unlikely to have been collected for export in any quantity.
If ever obtained, it would be best kept in a well-filtered, highly oxygenated aquarium with a strong directional current, rocky decor and open swimming space, with water conditions matching its field data: neutral pH around 7 and temperature near 72 °F. The two pairs of barbels indicate it would probe the substrate for food, so a smooth gravel or fine-cobble bottom rather than sharp or injurious substrate is advisable. Its small size (under 3 in SL) would make it compatible with other peaceful stream barbs and cyprinids from similar habitats.
Conservation
Poropuntius hathe is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List (assessed 2011), reflecting the limited information available on its distribution, population size and trends. A Data Deficient listing does not imply that the species is not threatened — it simply records that current evidence is insufficient to assign a threat category.
The Menam Moei River, its type locality, flows through a region subject to logging, agricultural encroachment and periodic infrastructure development along the Thai–Myanmar border. The Salween basin more broadly faces pressure from proposed large hydropower schemes on the mainstem in Myanmar, which could alter flow regimes and fragment populations of riverine fishes across the system. The apparent restricted range of P. hathe across just two known drainages (Moei and Ataran) makes it potentially vulnerable to localised disturbance, though without survey data a meaningful risk assessment remains impossible.
