Taxonomy & naming
Poropuntius heterolepidotus was described by ichthyologist Tyson Roberts in 1998 in his review of tropical Asian cyprinids published through the Siam Society. The holotype (CAS 94265, 5.5 in standard length) was collected from a locality in the Salween basin, Thailand, and the species name heterolepidotus — from the Greek hetero (different, varied) and lepis/lepidos (scale) — alludes to the variable or distinctive scale count that helps define it within the genus.
Poropuntius itself is a genus of medium to large cyprinids distributed across mainland Southeast Asia and the Sundaland transitional zone. The genus was placed within the broad assemblage once loosely called "Puntius" or "Barbus", but following the Pethiyagoda et al. 2012 rationalisation and subsequent revisions, it is now treated as a valid, well-supported genus in its own right. A 2024 molecular systematic study in ZooKeys confirmed P. heterolepidotus as a valid species within the revised genus, placing it among Poropuntius populations found in the Chao Phraya, Mae Klong, Salween, and Tenasserim River basins.
Morphology
Poropuntius heterolepidotus reaches at least 5.5 in standard length — a size recorded from male specimens on FishBase and consistent with it being a moderately large barb rather than a small aquarium species. The lateral line carries 36–40 scales, a count that figures prominently in the taxonomic literature on the genus and helps separate it from similar Poropuntius in the same region.
The species is characterised by two pairs of long barbels, a feature noted in comparative studies of Poropuntius across the Chao Phraya, Mae Klong, Salween, and Tenasserim drainages. A specific pharyngeal tooth arrangement further defines it anatomically among its congeners. Beyond these diagnostic characters, detailed meristic and morphometric data are limited in the published literature, reflecting how recently the genus has received rigorous systematic attention.
Habitat
Poropuntius heterolepidotus is recorded from the Salween River basin in Thailand — a major trans-boundary river that originates in the Tibetan Plateau and flows south through Myanmar before reaching the Andaman Sea. The Salween drains rugged mountainous terrain and carries clear, often fast-flowing water through forested valleys, and the basin's relative isolation and difficult access have kept it less surveyed than adjoining drainages such as the Chao Phraya.
FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic and freshwater, consistent with other Poropuntius that occupy riverine and stream environments over gravel and rock substrates. Given the Salween's geography — relatively cool, well-oxygenated water descending through limestone and forest terrain — the habitat likely differs from the warm lowland blackwater of Sundaland cyprinids: river-associated, moderately flowing, and probably seasonally variable in depth and current.
Feeding
No dedicated feeding study on Poropuntius heterolepidotus appears in the available literature. The genus Poropuntius is composed of medium to large omnivorous cyprinids typical of mainland Southeast Asian rivers, and related species are known to consume invertebrates, algae, plant material and organic detritus from the substrate — a foraging mode facilitated by the long barbels that help detect food at or near the riverbed.
The two pairs of well-developed barbels described for P. heterolepidotus are consistent with benthic foraging: they are sensory organs that allow fish to probe sediment and find invertebrates, seeds and detrital particles. In the aquarium, comparable Poropuntius are generally undemanding omnivores accepting sinking pellets, frozen invertebrates and vegetable-based foods, though the species is seldom if ever encountered in the trade.
Mating
No direct observations of mating behaviour exist for Poropuntius heterolepidotus in the literature. As a member of the family Cyprinidae, it is expected to follow the characteristic barb reproductive pattern: non-guarding egg-scattering with no pair bond and no parental investment.
In larger riverine barbs of comparable size from Southeast Asia, spawning is often associated with seasonal rises in water level and increases in current and temperature linked to monsoon rains. Males likely compete to drive gravid females, and eggs and milt are released together in the water column or over the substrate. No territory is held, and no nest of any kind is constructed.
Breeding
Breeding records for Poropuntius heterolepidotus in captivity are absent from the accessible literature. The biology of the species in the wild is inferred from its family membership and from what is known of similar-sized Poropuntius in other Indochinese drainages.
Like all barbs, it would be expected to be an egg-scatterer with no parental care: adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs are scattered over the substrate — gravel, rock or submerged vegetation — and the adults take no further role. Large river-associated cyprinids in the region often time spawning to coincide with the onset of seasonal flooding, using the increased flow and food availability of the wet season to raise survival chances for larvae. Captive breeding details remain unknown and the species is not established in the ornamental trade.
In the aquarium
Poropuntius heterolepidotus is not an aquarium species in any practical sense. At nearly 5.5 in SL it is a relatively large barb, and it comes from the Salween basin — a remote and heavily regulated transboundary river where collection for the trade is not routine. No records of the species in captivity appear in the hobbyist or specialist literature.
Should specimens become available, care requirements would be inferred from its natural habitat: clean, well-oxygenated riverine water, a current, a spacious aquarium (at minimum 59–78.5 in in length for a fish of this size), and a diet of sinking carnivore pellets supplemented with frozen invertebrates and plant matter. Its barbels and size suggest a bottom-oriented, active fish suited to groups of its own kind rather than life as a solitary display animal.
Conservation
Poropuntius heterolepidotus is listed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, assessed on 12 March 2011. This reflects the limited information available on population size, range extent, and the degree of any decline — not a presumption of safety. A Data Deficient listing means the species cannot currently be placed on the threat spectrum, and more survey work in the Salween basin is needed before a meaningful assessment can be made.
The Salween River is one of the longest free-flowing rivers in mainland Southeast Asia, but it faces growing pressure from hydroelectric dam proposals, and the Myanmar and Thai stretches are subject to deforestation and increased agricultural runoff. The freshwater fish fauna of the Salween is incompletely known, and endemic or near-endemic species face the risk of being affected by large-scale infrastructure before their status can be properly evaluated. The 2024 systematic revision of Poropuntius improves the taxonomic foundation for future monitoring, but field surveys remain the critical gap.
