Taxonomy & naming
Neolissochilus stracheyi was described by the British ichthyologist Francis Day in 1871. Day placed it within the broad genus Barbus, and the species was subsequently shuffled through various arrangements — including the expansive catch-all Puntius — before being settled in Neolissochilus, a genus of large Asian mahseer-like cyprinids separated from Tor and the smaller barb genera on the basis of morphology and molecular evidence. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) records the valid combination as Neolissochilus stracheyi Day, 1871.
The genus Neolissochilus encompasses the 'Lesser Mahseers' or 'Blue Mahseers' of South and Southeast Asia, distinct from the larger true mahseers of Tor. The species epithet stracheyi honours a historical figure of the colonial era in whose honour Day named several fishes during his ichthyological surveys of British India and adjacent territories. GBIF records the taxon under ID 2362798, consistent with the Day (1871) authority and its Cyprinidae placement.
Morphology
Neolissochilus stracheyi is a large, robust cyprinid that FishBase records reaching 23.5 in standard length, making it one of the larger barbs in the Southeast Asian freshwater fauna. The body is deep and laterally compressed, with a blunt snout and the large scales characteristic of the genus. The dorsal surface is bronzed to olive, the flanks silvery, and a dark lateral stripe runs from behind the gill cover toward the caudal peduncle. The belly is pale to silvery white. Fins are typically uncoloured to faintly dusky, and the caudal fin is distinctly forked.
The dorsal fin carries 9 branched rays per FishBase — a useful meristic character within the genus. Like other mahseers, the species has a relatively large mouth suited to processing a wide range of food items in fast-water environments. No information on external sexual dimorphism is available from the current literature, and aquarium observations are limited given the species' rarity in the hobby.
Habitat
The Blue Mahseer inhabits clear, fast-flowing rivers and hill streams across its Southeast Asian range. It is strongly associated with well-oxygenated, upland and foothill waters — rocky or gravelly substrates near rapids and riffles, within the broader Salween, Maeklong, Chao Phraya, Mekong, and Peninsular Thai river systems. Its benthopelagic lifestyle means it occupies the water column over these hard substrates rather than living pressed to the riverbed.
Hobbyist and specialist sources record preferred temperatures of 73–82 °F and a pH of 6.5–7.2, consistent with the near-neutral, cool, mineral-buffered waters of Southeast Asian hill rivers. Current tolerance is high: this species cannot survive in slow, warm, or oxygen-depleted conditions. During the monsoon season adults undertake spawning migrations upstream toward gravelly shallows, a pattern common across the mahseer group.
Feeding
Neolissochilus stracheyi is an omnivore with a broad diet that FishBase documents as including algae, crustaceans, insects, frogs, other fish, and fallen fruits — a diverse opportunistic menu typical of large river cyprinids in dynamic, seasonally flooded systems. In fast-water habitats algae scraped from rocks and aquatic invertebrates caught in the current form a likely dietary staple, supplemented by whatever vertebrate or plant material the river delivers.
In aquarium and angling contexts the species accepts formulated foods and natural baits including fruits, dough, and protein-rich items. Its willingness to take surface and mid-column foods as well as benthic material reflects its generalist foraging strategy across the full water column of its natural rivers.
Mating
Neolissochilus stracheyi, like all barbs, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no pair bond, no nest construction, and no parental care of any kind. Courtship involves active pursuit of gravid females by males, with the two fish coming together briefly over suitable substrate to release eggs and milt simultaneously.
Spawning is seasonal and linked to the monsoon in the species' Southeast Asian range. Adults migrate upstream toward rocky and gravelly shallows to broadcast spawn, a migratory strategy common among large river cyprinids that maximises dispersal of offspring into productive nursery habitats as floodwaters recede. Breeding
Like other large mahseers, Neolissochilus stracheyi is a broadcast egg-scatterer that deposits adhesive eggs over gravel and rocky substrates in fast-flowing, well-oxygenated upland river sections. Sexual maturity is reached at relatively large sizes — FishBase records maturation in the 30–45+ cm range — meaning the species requires several years of growth before first reproduction, a life-history trait that makes populations slower to recover from overharvest or habitat disruption.
Spawning in the wild is tied to the monsoon season and associated river rises. Adults scatter eggs and abandon them; the eggs and larvae develop without any parental attention, relying on interstitial spaces in gravel and the high oxygen content of fast water for incubation. Captive breeding of this species is not documented in the hobbyist literature, and its large adult size, migratory behaviour, and demand for cold, highly oxygenated conditions make it impractical as an aquarium breeding subject.
In the aquarium
Neolissochilus stracheyi is rarely kept in home aquaria. Its maximum size of 23.5 in SL and its requirement for strong, continuous water movement and high dissolved oxygen make it a species suited only to public aquarium installations or the largest specialist facilities. Hobbyist sources note that it is generally peaceful with similarly sized, active fish when space is adequate, but its demands for flow and cool, well-filtered water are not trivially met.
For the few specialists who attempt it, the setup must replicate a fast upland river: powerful filtration and circulation, temperature held in the 73–82 °F range, near-neutral pH (6.5–7.2), and a substrate of rounded gravel and large stones. Compatibility with robust mid-sized fish that share its preference for current is reasonable; slow-water species would be mismatched. Feeding is unproblematic given the species' omnivorous breadth, though a diet with both protein and plant components best reflects its wild intake.
Conservation
Neolissochilus stracheyi is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (2022 assessment, taxon ID 174785418), reflecting its broad distribution across multiple major river systems in Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam and the absence of evidence for a range-wide population crash. However, the LC global status masks regional-level concern: genetic research on Thai populations in Mae Hong Son province has documented population structuring and issued early conservation recommendations to prevent a localised population crisis, indicating that fragmentation of river corridors is already affecting this species at the drainage scale.
The primary pressures on N. stracheyi are habitat-based — dams impeding spawning migrations, river extraction for agriculture and human use, sedimentation from upland deforestation, and localised overfishing by subsistence and sport anglers. Its slow maturation (first reproduction at 30–45+ cm) makes populations vulnerable to harvest pressure even at modest exploitation levels. Maintaining free-flowing river connectivity between lowland feeding habitats and upland spawning grounds is the most critical conservation need for this and similar large-river mahseer species across the Mekong region.
