Taxonomy & naming
Poropuntius scapanognathus was described by the American ichthyologist Tyson R. Roberts in 1998 in his review of the tropical Asian cyprinid genus Poropuntius, published in the Natural History Bulletin of the Siam Society (volume 46, pp. 105–135). The review recognised a set of trophic morphs and new species within the genus, of which scapanognathus was one. Roberts described the species from material collected at Huay Kong, below the mouth of Huay Long River, near kilometre 45 on highway 1126, northwest of Mae Hong Son, placing it within the Salween basin of Thailand.
The genus Poropuntius belongs to the family Cyprinidae and is allied to the broader assemblage of Asian barbs previously lumped under the old, polyphyletic genus Puntius. A 2012 revisionary study by Pethiyagoda and colleagues dismantled that catch-all genus and redistributed South and Southeast Asian barbs across several well-supported genera; Poropuntius, named earlier, was confirmed as a valid genus distinct from Puntius. The species has no known synonyms. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the current valid name Poropuntius scapanognathus Roberts, 1998.
The epithet scapanognathus derives from Greek roots relating to the jaw, likely referring to a distinctive jaw or snout morphology noted by Roberts in the original description — consistent with the genus Poropuntius, whose members show varied trophic adaptations including modified jaws suited to different food sources in riverine habitats.
Morphology
FishBase records a maximum standard length of 5 in for Poropuntius scapanognathus, placing it in the mid-size range for the genus. Like other Poropuntius, it is a cyprinid of the typical barb body plan — fusiform and laterally compressed, with a terminal or sub-terminal mouth and the complete lateral line and cycloid scales characteristic of the family.
Taxonomic work on the genus by Roberts (1998) noted that Poropuntius species exhibit trophic morphological variation linked to habitat: flowing-water forms tend to be more elongated with a longer caudal peduncle, while pool-dwelling forms are deeper-bodied. The original description of scapanognathus provides the diagnostic characters distinguishing it from congeners, but detailed colouration and fin-count data are not widely reproduced in secondary sources. Habitat
The type locality of Poropuntius scapanognathus is Huay Kong, a stream below the mouth of Huay Long River in the Salween drainage of northwestern Thailand, near Mae Hong Son Province. The species is recorded from Thailand and Myanmar within the broader Salween basin. FishBase classifies it as a freshwater, benthopelagic species.
The Salween (known as the Thanlwin in Myanmar) is one of mainland Southeast Asia's major transboundary rivers, draining the mountains of the Shan Plateau and flowing south through narrow gorges before entering the Andaman Sea. The upper and middle tributaries where this species occurs are typically clear, fast-flowing hill and montane streams over rocky and gravel substrates, with warm tropical temperatures and water chemistry ranging from soft to moderately hard with a broadly neutral to slightly acidic pH. No species-specific water chemistry data have been published for P. scapanognathus.
Feeding
No dedicated feeding study has been conducted on Poropuntius scapanognathus. Inferences about its diet draw on the genus-level trophic biology described by Roberts (1998), who highlighted that Poropuntius species have evolved varied jaw morphologies associated with different food guilds in tropical Asian rivers. Flowing-water forms in the genus are thought to feed on periphyton, algae, small invertebrates and organic detritus scraped or picked from hard substrates.

Mating

In closely related flowing-water cyprinids from mainland Southeast Asia, spawning is typically triggered by seasonal cues — rising water temperature and rainfall at the onset of the wet season — which flush spawning fish onto flooded margins and gravel bars where eggs are scattered over the substrate. A driving male pursues a gravid female and the two release eggs and milt simultaneously, after which the adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs are left to develop unaided.
Breeding
Poropuntius scapanognathus has not been bred in captivity in any documented account accessible through the available literature. Its biology as a mid-sized, flowing-water Salween cyprinid suggests it would follow the standard barb reproductive pattern: egg-scattering with no parental care, likely seasonal in the wild, and potentially triggered in captivity by temperature variation, increased flow, and a conditioning period on live or frozen foods.
In the absence of aquarium breeding records, practical guidance must remain speculative. The species' size (over 4.5 in SL) and its origins in flowing highland streams suggest it would require a spacious tank with good water movement and well-oxygenated water to thrive, let alone reproduce. Adults of all barbs should be separated from their eggs after spawning to prevent predation.
In the aquarium
Poropuntius scapanognathus is not an aquarium fish in any established sense. It has not appeared in the ornamental trade and no husbandry records exist in the hobby literature. The species is known only from museum specimens and FishBase records derived from the Roberts (1998) description.
Its moderate size of around 4.5 in SL and its origin in fast-flowing tributaries of the upper Salween basin suggest that, if kept, it would require a roomy, well-filtered aquarium with strong current, good oxygenation, and clean water. Water conditions modelled on its native habitat — tropical temperatures, soft to moderate hardness, and a neutral to slightly acidic pH — would be appropriate starting points. The species' rarity and inaccessibility mean it is unlikely to become available to hobbyists without targeted collection from its remote type locality in northwestern Thailand or adjacent Myanmar.
Conservation
Poropuntius scapanognathus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and is therefore classified as Not Evaluated (NE). No conservation status, population estimate, or threat assessment has been published for the species.
The Salween basin faces growing pressure from large-scale hydroelectric development. A cascade of dams proposed and in various stages of construction along the Salween mainstream and its tributaries in Myanmar and China poses significant risks to the river's ichthyofauna through habitat fragmentation, altered hydrology and blocked migration routes. Small-range endemics in upper tributaries are particularly vulnerable. Without formal assessment and baseline population data for P. scapanognathus, the impact of these pressures on this species remains unknown. The species' restricted known range — a single drainage system near Mae Hong Son — warrants targeted survey work to establish whether it qualifies for listing under IUCN criteria.
